My husband has a large tattoo over his stomach. Wasn't able to go to the onsen with everyone else. Some of them allow tattoos if you can cover them. He also looks Japanese, which didn't help the situation.

as long as you keep it out of the sun, and dont get wrinkly or lose/gain too much weight at once, your tattoos will keep for years.

While this style of full back tattoo is currently associated with the Yakuza that wasn't always the case. There was a time in Japan when firefighters used to get full back tattoos, as a way for their fellows to identify their body should the unfortunate happen when putting out fires. It used to be a mark of great respect, too, as their line of work was a dangerous one.

Lived in of Japan for yrs and around the shadier bar areas. I agree that's yakuza ink level. It's the same as stripes on a snake or bright colors on a frog. It means don't fuck with me. The girls that openly strut around wearing that don't get bother or you get broken. I got stuck in a bar after following a lady tatted up like that. They turned the elevator off when I got in and ended up being forced to spend almost 1k to before they let me leave. At least I got booze out of it.

Yakuza tatoos have meaning, to get it, the master has to agree with it/has to be earned. the fact she is showcasing can tell you she's not as for them tattoos are a private thing. "Yakuza style" tattoos are common, so not every full body tattoo is yakuza :) if that helps :D

From what I understand, the yakuza is also discouraged from publicly displaying their tattoos. Partly because tattoos are still a taboo in Japan, also because they don’t want to draw attention to themselves, and also because they deem modesty as a virtue.

correct! a minor thing, but a good number of hot springs there don't allow you to enter if you have tattoos. westerners may be able to get by just because they're not japanese though.

It's so sad the originally full body tattoos were a sign of bravery as fire fighters the centuries would have them so they can be identified if they died while on duty. But due to the yakuza, the past century has turned it into a sign of dishonor.

You should compare a tattoo wound with a graze. When it's healed, the skin performs again like it did before. Doesn't matter how big the tattoo is.

Only caution I'd heard was for people getting tattoos using metallic ink. You have to warn your docs before getting an MRI in that area, because it can cause skin burns.

The skin still works normally, sweat etc, but I notice that the black ink work in direct sunlight get noticeably warmer than my normal skin. Also certain colours are more likely to fade if exposed to direct sunlight, such as red ink

Im terrified of needles. My whole back is done. Can't see the needle, no problem. As for the pain scale, it's a 2 or 3 out of 10 for me. Feels more like someone scratching my skin rather than poking. Never have problems with sweat or temperature either, even when healing, or at least I never noticed.

That's the funny bit. I'm not afraid of needles. And I've done massive damage to my skin. I'm a machinic, so my arms are full of scars and burns. Something about having a tattoo gives me the willies though. Add the expense and I can't see paying money for something like that. But that's just me. I respect the art and dedication. Just can't do it
