This country would have been so much better if Bobby got elected. He would have dismantled the CIA and FBI and rebuilt them. We wouldnt have this police state that they have wanted ever since the 50s. But they knew that so we didnt get Bobby.
There were two types. One for the driver that went outside the car like this one. The other type of tray hooked on to the window like that but went inside the car over the passengers lap like a little one-person table.
You didn't have drive-throughs. You pulled into a parking spot, and a waitress came out (sometimes on roller skates) to take your order. She brought your food on one of those trays, and you ate in the car. When you were done, you turned on your headlights for service, and she came and took the tray (and, at A& W, the glass rootbeer mugs) away, and you left.
Oh, those used to be common. When I was a kid we’d go to Steak ‘n Shake and they’d bring the food out on those trays. With actual glasses not paper cups.
Oh, I don’t know how to tell you this. They don’t do drive in at most locations and they certainly don’t do the tray anymore. They just expect you to eat with your hands, like a cave man.
You don’t need to tell me I’ve been watching the decline of White Spot drive ins for several decades. There’s still West Broadway, Park & Tilford, Lougheed, and one out in Surrey… any others left? Those are all the ones I know about.
There's a real one near me, but I think they stopped doing that in the late 80s. You can still get eggs, coffee, sausage, and toast for 7.50 if you bring cash though.
Back in the '60's my parents would take us to one that was near our house. I remember the waitresses wore white go go boots with tassels hanging on them.

One has to wonder if this was the day that he should have jerked off or spawned his Jr.

Wrong timing, too.

The precarious tray mount system tells me everything I need to know about that period of history.
Chupacabrabreath
They had those at a few place when I was young, sturdier than you think. (I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't some place using them today)

I'm more amazed at the tray holder contraption than anything else

Those were the good old days. Drive up to an A&W and someone would bring your order and you sat in your car and ate.

Oh yeah, all the drive-in restaurants had those. It clips to the window.

It's a "hostess tray".

That was standard in before there were drive-ins.
Smashaga
There used to be ones that went across the interior, window to window. A&W and White Spot -a family restaurant in BC, Canada- were famous for them.

That’s it, I’m going to the White Spot drive in for dinner tonight. Gonna eat off a tray.

A lot of fast food places had those hostess trays for cars back then
badcode4o4
burgermaster in the Seattle area still does that

Fast food places and diners etc.

Were the trays designed to fit where the metal strips sit or were the strips put there so the tray can rest on the car without scratching?
azazyel
Hell you could find places that had them in the 80s
