You can level up hella quick using alteration/smithing/speechcraft. You'll also make tons of gold and great armor/weapons.

Lower your expectations for the main quest and don't expect to be able to kill an NPCs that you should be able to kill.

To be honest its a nice way to earn some money and xp early on u can do whatever u want man. if ur a mage id say go for perk that gives 1/2
