I genuinely think that over-normalizing and trivializing serious mental health issues is detrimental to the social stigma and view of these disorders. If an individual struggling thinks "oh this is normal, everyone on Facebook/Imgur/Reddit is also incredibly suicidal", less people will seek out the psychiatric help and therapy they desperately need.

To be honest, as someone who genuinely suffers from fairly crippling social anxiety and depression, it really bother me when friends others

Who I know don't actually suffer from these same mental illnesses play them off as a joke. It's become so vogue to have a mental disability.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Since it has become "normal", I'm no longer ashamed to get the help I need. Dark humor has helped me, more than it has hurt.

9 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 2

Exactly what I was going to say. A lot of people don't seek the help they need because they feel isolated. This kind of thing stops that.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Helps me tbh... i feel less alone knowing that im not the one having issues and that people are lending an ear or say a kind word or two...

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

On the contrary it is normal to be depressed and anxious in a society like ours. Sharing it with other people is healthy.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

lots of people seem to have this idea in their heads that if they aren't happy, then they must be depressed

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If they have a long-standing unhappiness, and find nothing appealing in life? Yes. They are depressed. That's the definition of (1)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

depression - a persistent mood of sadness and loss of interest. That said, "persistent" is the key word. Being sad for a day doesn't (2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

mean you're depressed. But if you're sad for a week straight, with no clear-cut reason why, you may be in a depressive episode.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Clinical psychologist here. To provide hope, message needs to be "mental illness is normal (doesn't mean YOU are bad) AND it can be helped"

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I believe OP is more getting at portraying it as something everyone just has and doesn't get help for.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

both effects are there, but I tend to go with "It is normal. It is ok. Get help anyways, because normal doesn't mean good or healthy."

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I see what you mean. With that, I'd be inclined to say "common", rather than "normal", as I'd think normal implies it's not an issue.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a point, although I'd think that calling it normal could also mean that it's not an individual but systemic issue - one I'd sign

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. After realizing it wasnt normal I thought it stupid I hadn't gone sooner. With medication I can control my bipolar disorder!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Some people need someone to talk to. Letting these posts get to the front page is a bit much, but downvoting to hell isn't good either.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think the real solution is don't take memes (of all things) seriously.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

On the contrary actually. According to a research, people get less depressed if they see how others got everything worse than they do. (+)

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

(+)This applies to other direction too: If you see how good someone is doing, you'll feel bad about ur sucky life in comparison. This is (+)

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

(+) why instagram makes people depressed. People only post their highlights there, and everyone seems to be doing just great.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

So people hearing that lots of others feel how they do will disincentivize them from seeing help?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Thanks to those depressed posts, I feel like I'm not alone in feeling this way. Sorry you have to deal with us.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

No, don't apologize. Your coping mechanism making someone else uncomfortable is not your problem, it's theirs.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The mental illness rates, particularly depression, have been skyrocketing in the west, particularly America. It is normal, which is the issue

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can't comment on the post but I'll do this. So when I was 10(in 13 now I started to become suicidal and depressed and I went on here 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And I saw posts on this topic and I got really confused but then I was alright it's normal to feel like this then and I just kept on and 2/?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I still deal with depression and self harm and suicidal thoughts and I've gotten better I have friend that understand it now 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fear not, for aren't puffins only used for messages which are detrimental to mental health anyway?

As someone who actively goes to extensive therapy to fight my severe anxiety, I hate seeing it trivialised on social media, so thank you!!!!

But like, why are we taking moral advice from Genghis Khan?

We need to make mental health normal. It's nothing to be ashamed of. After the recession the Suicide rates are high.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

I'm saying the severity of mental disorders shouldn't be reduced to a constant meme dumps or a generalized joke

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Right. I have loved ones who seem even more depressed and socially awkward now because it has become "cool" due to the same recycled memes.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I think normalizing mental health issues tells people with such issues that they aren't so weird after all

9 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 2

also usually creates a bandwagon affect

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 8

I don't honestly think there's a lot of fakers. There's a small number of fakers who do a lot :/

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I don't think people fake so much as they just misdiagnose themselves. They want to find explanations for different things in their lives

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

but go to the internet instead of a doctor or other pro. So instead of something like "Oh, hormones" they think "Oh, mental illness" just

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

like the people who look up their cold symptoms and think "Shit, pneumonia". Everyone has the info but not everyone has the understanding.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

there are a huge number of people who are bored and unhappy who have self-diagnosed clinical depression

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

"Self-diagnosed" being the key term here.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Bullshit. Normalizing mental illness helps to remove the stigma that often keeps people from seeking help.

Vicious cycle / coping instead of treating / reenforcement of beliefs etc etc.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

I had my first major depressive episode in years last April and someone got mad at me for posting on facebook what was going on and why (1)

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I might not be in class or why I was going to disappear from social media. I wasn't whining at all. Some people just want you to shut up 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Some people just refuse to sympathize. If you assume depression doesn't exist, it's "whining".

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Completely true. The eternal "suck it up" or "stop moping" comments. Sorry, depression doesn't work that way.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah it's not like I couldn't get myself to eat anything or couldn't physically get out of bed. I should have just tried harder.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its better to normalize mental illnesses. The stigma of them being weird terrible things that need to be hidden away does a lot more damage

9 years ago | Likes 496 Dislikes 19

Yeah, we can do without the policing. If we are gonna start censoring Imgur can we at least start with the trans-hate and the softcore porn?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Holy shit is this true. Frickin baby boomer parents wouldn't get me psych help as a kid (started being suicidal around 11).

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

But it doesn't normalize real mental illness, it just makes it into a common joke.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Agreed, but this is about all the idiots complaining about their OCD (they like things kinda neat) and pseudo-depression (having a bad day).

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The ideas on the Internet of depression being so widespread actually stopped me from getting help for almost a decade, thinking that I

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Didn't have it bad enough to be considered depressed. My somatic symptoms have gotten severe enough that I've been tested for arthritis. I

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had so much physical pain that I couldn't function. My blood panel was all normal and healthy, but thanks to my emotional state the doctor

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was able to tell me before I even got the blood tests that there was a good chance my pain was coming from my depression.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We should not normalize nor choose to hide them. Some want and will help but only if those struggling w the illness admit it is an illness.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

By definition, it is abnormal. If you want to remove stigma, fine, but call apples apples. Don't pretend that illness is alternative health.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

Literally no one is.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Using absolutes so flippantly like that is going to land you in trouble. Many people can and do try to characterize it as "still healthy"(1)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

because they believe it to be a weapon against people who stigmatize it. While it shouldn't be stigmatized, that's the wrong approach. (2)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's like people going "I was born gay" when in reality they should say "Yeah, I'm gay, what about it, go fuck yourself." Don't be (3)

Depression makes you feel very alone. Finding out that others feel exactly how you is a kind of a revelation that your not totally crazy.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I don't think anyone is saying that being clinically depressed is desirable. But we now know it is more common than we thought.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Agreed. Normalization doesn't actually remove the stigma from mental illness. Learning you shouldn't be an asshole to people because of /2

but they can. I don't think suicide should be trivialized, though.

"Depression" is too often fetishized on social media sites. Theres a big difference between normal unhappiness and a chemical imbalance.

I used to say I was in love with my sadness. Not really sure what depression is or if I have it - have had bouts though. Good post.

Hyperemotionalism is a major syndrome of adolescent transition and is often confused/romanticized as mental illness. Very fashionable.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 20

He means that the people without depression casually talking about it without actually knowing anything about it undermines the struggles-

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I don't think he does mean that. In any case, it's much worse when toolbags like this say people should be censored because he doesn't like

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 5

Eh, it seems to me that there is genuine concern, if misguided.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

THANK YOU. This was bothering me but I couldn't find a way to articulate it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

No. What was harmful was the baby boomer generation's approach to dismissing and ignoring it, leading to our terrible mental healthcare

9 years ago | Likes 212 Dislikes 23

Well yeah, but... it's just not funny. Like... at all.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's possible for more than one thing to be harmful.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No what's harmful is thinking that an entire generation of people screwed everything up when it was really just a few turds in authority.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'd have less of an issue with that if so many of the generation understood the differences between the golden ticket they got (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

(2/2) and the shaft every generation after them got. Turds in authority or not, they still benefited from those decisions

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Have you actually talked to them?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

In my experience they don't talk TO our generation--they speak AT us.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No, you point fingers when a ship sinks. The fucker at the helm? He's supposed to go DOWN with the ship, not be the first on the lifeboat.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I ABSOLUTELY agree. Hearing so many of that age group saying that mental disorders don't exist is so difficult and frustrating.

9 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 8

Of all the things were parents could be accused, this is thankfully not one. Though, the irony of my dad telling me it was ok to seek 1/x

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Therapy while also constantly destroying my self image with the emotional abuse did escape me until much later.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

As the options for treatment increase, it becomes easier for that next generation to be more open about mental health issues. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a boomer myself, who takes meds, it was hard to open up about a disease, already stigmatized, when the good meds weren't around yet.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

that said, also remember that now it's the boomers' kids saying "there's nothing wrong with my perfect little angel, he didn't mean to...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

shoot a dozen kids at the park. besides, boys will be boys~"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

hell, man... "on fire" was a long time ago. "raging uncontrolled wildfire" is a bit more like what we have now.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

All because now it's acceptable to have issues, because everyone does, and always has. People will find a way to ruin everything...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The baby boomer generation's approach? You mean every generation until now's approach, right?

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

No, I mean the part where science advances to the point where things can be explained and an entire generation ignores it anyway

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

A generation who decides pills solve everything and kick everyone out of mental health facilities

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

A generation who decided they didn't need public mental health, because it was expensive, so they kicked everyone out and shut them down

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Then, when the people who needed help snapped, society was pissed at them again on an individual level, and had them arrested

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

So people who suffer from depression need to be in psychiatric hospitals? Not trying to be a smartass just askibg

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was referring to mental health in general, but even for those with depression actually HAVING facilities is better than prison.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

For people on the verge to snap, that may be necessary. Also note that mental health is about WAY more than depression.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope you know the next generations after us are gonna be saying this kind of stuff about *us* in 30-50 years. "MILLENNIALS SCREWED US ALL"

It's difficult to sympathize with things they've never felt...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think empathizing might be hard for them, but if they don't have any sympathy what-so-ever, that's kinda shitty

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, more I meant that I was assured depression and suicidal thoughts was normal from such a young age. Had no idea for such a long time.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To be honest, though, I think it helps a lot of people too. Being miserable AND alone is the worst.

9 years ago | Likes 1711 Dislikes 61

And it might help some be less ashamed of going out and seeking professional help.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah? Well I'm miserable and alone, so maybe someone can explain how whining to strangers online will make me less so. I'm with OP.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Knowing others are fighting anxiety alongside with me helps tremendously. The thought of facing it alone is too much.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And I feel it helps normalize. Me at least, I don't feel like I'm an outlier

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But being miserable and seeing that everyone else is too, can be the last straw for some.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hope is a fleeting thing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think that is BS.. I struggle enough without needing to see it on here. I come here for some humor, some relief from a harsh reality.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can confirm, I'm miserable and alone, which just makes me more miserable

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's true! but I've met some who try too hard to normalize it and it ends up sounding like "why you complaining? it's not a big deal"

I know! I cant wait t o die :\

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I never understood this. Not being alone in how I feel about things has never made the pain easier for me. Glad it helps some though

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

I find it easier to talk to friends who have been as low as me, than even to talk to family.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Not easier but some people feel less like an alien then.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's about connecting with others and knowing that we all feel the same feelings. This can lead to helping others

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's cool and all, but i don't really care about people enough to connect with them.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm a little envious of people who can manage to bond over nothing but shared anxieties. I'm not even convinced you *do* feel what I feel.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, i feel this, too. It affects everyone differently.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

agreed.

Thank you for this, I really enjoyed the read.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The problem is it also romanticizes them. Everyone knows that one attention whore whos convinced they have the latest media mentioned ail.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd rather have depression and be alone in having it than knowing millions of other suffer from the same thing, and even worse.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To each their own, but as someone with a lot of stuff wrong, I like knowing I'm not alone. ¯\_(o_o)_/¯

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You learn to live with it, kind of like being born with a hole in your heart.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most of the shit on imgur is ppl self-diagnosing their own sadness as "crippling depression" tho which is definitely harmful

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 6

"oh I have clinical depression so it's totally out of my control even though I'm just lazy."

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 7

Which is why I hate using the word "sad" when discussing with my doctor my feelings and such. Not to mention it's so goddamn vague!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've always felt like the sadness is secondary. Anybody would be dealing with depression long term.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes but being proud of your depression is even worse. You have to accept that it's a problem and work towards a solution. Not romanticize it

This - many are talking like it's a drug you can just get help for and quit, and if that were the case, everyone would be free of it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly, sometimes reading that others have it tough makes it suck less, thinking that you are not the only one feeling like shit all the ti

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not trying to be confrontational but no one I've ever known that's been clinically depressed would even know how to romanticize, anything.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Depression and happiness are often not simply states of being you can become through effort. You will never be "happy" permanently.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Romanticizing happiness is worse. Making people feel like they have to fake happiness or invalidate their emotions is seriously unhealthy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This comment is top tier

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sometimes depression is a symptom of living in a crappy situation. Sometimes its not.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

To some who aren't clinically depressed its a self diagnosis to excuse toxic and self destructive behavior.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Romanticizing and excusing all actions by those with "mental illness" in that regards is actually super harmful.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Good thing that's not actually happening...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is. I've seen a lot of people that aren't actually ill praised for manipulative and toxic behaviour under the guise of illness.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I can completely agree with that, and having someone relate to you and what you feel is super important however I disagree in that (1/?)

9 years ago | Likes 404 Dislikes 34

I'm sorry Genghis, I see your side of it, but I do agree with Java. It's bad enough to feel like this and it personally helps me cope.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Physciatric isn't cheap, by the way.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Someone with severe critical passive suicidal tendencies for an extended period of time is not really relatable to someone that (2/?)

I'm uncertain what memes you're referring to. It seems like there must be some I'm not seeing, or our interpretations vary. Example?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

wrong. memes helped me find help. memes 1 you 0

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don't know much about stuff, but even though my life is in a shit spot, I feel like my friends irl and people online have depression 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

far worse than I have. Sure, I've considered suicide before, but who hasn't? A buddy of mine killed himself and my only real irl 2/?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not so much about relating to the specific person who posted the meme as it is a general feeling of not being alone

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That can also feel like everyone feels as bad as you and you're the only one not managing life regardless of it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are, but what's that got to do with posting memes about feeling bad and being able to relate about feeling bad together?

9 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 7

Kids (and a sad number of adults) don't know the difference?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It being normalized like that leads to less people seeking treatment.

Because people should be aware they dont have to put up with or their whole life

Same. Looked for months for free and low cost options. Huge huge barriers. Nothing yet.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I don't need help 'cause most of the things that make me sad could be solved by hitting the lotto. Can't really do much about it otherwise.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same here.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Got refferal. They wanted $300/session & even if you cancelled 47hours before your appt you get charged full fee. Also not in network. Nope.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Istarted uaing blahtherapy . Com. It's been so helpful.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Try meditation. It is not easy but there are techniques that you can do by yourself so they are effectively free.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I used to do massage therapy and this was great, being a healer, and taking time to heal myself. It didn't pay the bills so I got a desk job

There are some apps that are $32 a week and you get to talk to a licenced person! It is texting but it can help.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That is hugely expensive for me. Not sure for anyone else.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh I agree when I first saw it I was shocked. But compared to other prices it is actually cheap (sadly)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I just found this site called 7cupsoftea it is supposed to be free therapy and what not. I haven't tried it yet but maybe it could help!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it's nothing new..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know it's not but it's easy to forget when here in Germany I get all my therapy and clinic stays paid and my wages when I can't work..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's the American dream thing, you can make as much or as little as you want, therapists and drs. included.????

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dont seek help cause I dont want to be on meds, and have come to realize this is who I am.

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 4

Also, if you need someone to listen, shoot me a message. And that goes for anyone having a tough time that comes across this.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not everyone who needs help needs meds. Talk therapy can be just as effective for some

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You don't have to be on meds. Many people can find help through therapy or other sources too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn´t! I got recommended a mild anxiety med, but thankfully, never needed. But it was nice to know I had a safety net just in case.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are multiple free therapy resources in most locations. Even if you can't afford prescriptions a therapist can be free and helpful

9 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 35

I tried that, they told me they were too full and I had to be suicidal to get in now.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You'd be surprised. As many as there are in my city, the majority of them are out of network, too far, or don't accept my insurance.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's not easy at all. Especially, tried to find in my network, it actually took me months to find. I wish it were easy as going to a clinic

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not on my area. And trust me, I've looked. The cheapest I could find was 100 bucks an hour. Though I also live in a very poor state.

There's also that issue of making too much for Medicaid and not enough to afford a plan that covers proper mental health treatment. (1)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2) that is if you live in a state that even bothered to expand Medicaid.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually as someone who is pursuing a PHD in Psychology, with a specialization on behavioral cognitive therapy, you can't cure depression.

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 18

Sometimes depression is a symptom of living in a crappy situation.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

no, you're an idiot

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You are getting a downvote because you are wrong. @TheBaroness5500 has it right.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

As a med student...we're all aware that psychology is not real science. Psychiatry? Yes. Psychology? Not at all.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 14

Psychiatry is hardly scientific. Diagnoses are based on vague symptoms, not medical causes, and treatment is trial-and-error at best.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Shit man, someone ought to let all those people benefiting from psychology and psychological research know to cut that out right away.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You're so wrong there buddy

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Wow. How much more misinformed can you get. Waste of a human right here.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a psychotherapist, & former sufferer, that's an incredibly damaging sweeping generalisation to make, and also unethical to lead with.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

And if a medical professional said that to me in any of my crisis periods, that could have led to me giving up on any hope of a normal life.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Current research is changing. Dbt is relatively new but for the majority of the patients my sponsor sees there is no emphasis on curing them

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I see the value of DBT, especially the emphasis on mindfulness, but just like CBT before it it is not for everyone.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dbt can help everyone. Mindfulness is a tool we all need. Understand your triggers and emotions is critical to healthy relationships

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I believe that DBT can be helpful people who respond to that structure. I personally responded much better to Person-Centred Therapy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But we never go about saying "you won't be cured" it's more like a "you be able to live as healthy a life as anyone" but there is always

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The urge or tendency to revert back to damaging behaviors, especially when people think that 4 months of therapy is all it takes to be cured

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I find that is often based on poor communication between the client and therapist, or by the referring physician.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So I'm interested in why you felt the need to say what you said in a public forum where a lot of people with mental health issues gather?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because we need to change the climate of mental health? Focus less of "curing these people " and letting them know they're not alone and

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And most people use these memes as a coping mechanism, and sometimes coping is all you can do,especially those with borderline personality

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 2

no, you're an idiot

Hey that's me! With the borderline personality and all. The memes really do help. I feel less alien because of them.
