I either use a rain jacket, or it's too hot for the jacket. If it is too hot for the jacket, then the rain was too short and I don't really need an umbrella.
It's all about what I'm wearing. Most of the time, who gives a shit? Yet I also like to occasionally dress up in fancy clothes and wear faire costume, which I prefer to keep dry
Yeah, people in Seattle don't use umbrellas. It only rains here for a few mins at a time mostly. We have a joke "What do you call someone with an umbrella in Seattle? A tourist."
I'm 60 years old and have never owned an umbrella. I just raw dogged the rain, put my head down and walked, in the 3 or 4 instances in my entire life when I couldn't just stay inside till it stopped raining.
I'm also not an umbrella user, but I will admit it got me a few weeks ago. Just torrential downpours and I just wanted to leave the store I was at (overstimulated, BAD) and I got DRENCHED walking to my car/unloading my groceries/returning the cart (yeah I still did it). I mean "looks like I jumped in a pool" wet. Took my shirt off to drive home cuz I was so soaked. First time in my life I wished I had an umbrella. I was cold for HOURS. also the rain stopped about 5 blocks away from the store. 😒
some people can't show up for work absolutely drenched, it's neat that you have been lucky and privileged to be pointlessly frivolous for so long though
Interestingly pruning of the hands and feet is a physiological response not simple water absorption, people with some types of nerve damage and things wont prune.
I did, but I live in the PNW. Funnily enough, it's actually MORE taboo here. Because it rains 210 days a year, you're supposed to have a jacket that's waterproof/water resistant. Using an umbrella is seen as annoying because of how much you'd use it, and then getting water all over the floor when you go inside a shop/office/etc.
Also I assume its windy there. Same problem here. The light sprinkle doesn't need an umbrella, and the heavy rain will fuck it up. Had rhe top one break off and end up in the Allegheny river while I was crossing the Andy Warhol bridge. Would have taken a picture, but this was back before cellphones were waterproof.
rolliefingers
Where you grew up that toddlers exclusively be strutting around with umbrellas
Lampmonster
Weird how many people are belligerently against being dry. Love my umbrella.
DoomScrollingCowboy
tell me you live in a car-centric society without telling me you live in a car-centric society
MaybeIllDisappear
In Phoenix you will get super sunburned/over heated not using an umbrella/parasol.
linexnewt
That's the only people who use umbrellas
dashers
As an Englishman, an umbrella is a necessity.
REOJackwagon
Use an umbrella, don't use an umbrella, I'm ok whatever people do. Why does everything have to be a culture war?
somerandomusernamebecauseididntlikemyoldone
Yeah, people seem to really enjoy taking a stand about absolutely nothing, declaring a tribe really.
martineb72

battery1979
I don't use an umbrella, I use Gortex.
AngelBunny8888
Are some people not waterproof? My skins like super waterproof.
P51mus
it doubles as mobile shade, also walking through a storm with one is kinda pleasant if it's not windy too.
Albertorius
I've as of late started seeing people using umbrellas because the sun is killing us with righteous fury, too, not just for keeping dry(ish).
CarrionKitten
Yeah this is the main thing I use them for. I don't care if I look stupid, sunlight is obnoxiously hot and I don't want a tan/sunburn/cancer
barbarian818
FWIW, I have never seen a small child using an umbrella correctly. Not even the yellow ducky one with the beak
SexGolem
I'm an Oregonian and thus amphibious. But aside from us frog people, umbrellas are great for stabbing people with stupid opinions.
MrImmaculate

AllTheGoodOnesWereGone
I grew up in Southern California and thought Umbrellas were just a thing they had on TV and in movies.
Antifalalalala
In the Pacific NW carrying an umbrella is a sign that you are not from there.
Canigetbannedagain2
Umbrella, laugh's in PNW.
Tengenstein
You give them to less well prepared people. Always have one in the car.
zeekcheek
people are so weird about umbrellas. it's like socially-defined gender expectations, but for everyone.
azazyel
People in Seattle "A what?"
vilikke
Seattle gets rookie numbers compared to the rain in Bergen, Norway (40" per year vs 98"), and we have umbrellas everywhere
azazyel

RockTheBackblast
I stopped using umbrellas because I kept leaving them on the bus and it was having an impact on my limited finances.
CarInAVet
The people saying they don't ever use umbrellas must not live somewhere with real torrential downpours.
WatchTheWorldLearn
What about torrential downpours that come in sideways? Umbrellas are not popular in the PWN or Aleutian chain.
CarInAVet
Fair 'nuff. I was talking more about the "I just duck my head and walk briskly" folks though.
supermoon10
Post written by someone who exclusively drives everywhere, including a 30 second walk to their nextdoor neighbour's.

I TOLD YOU I WAS HARDCORE

I am 100% waterproof. My clothes may not be, but I am except for when I sweat. Which is often.
LespritDeLescalier22
What if it was raining sweat
BeardicPerformance
Soak in water for a few hours and you’ll find very quickly that you’re not. The human body is remarkably permeable.
sv1rr
Well, yes.

RetrogradeLlama
Does anyone under 30 ever use an umbrella?
2graves
In Japan they do
ilhares
I did. I'm in my 50s now and can't even remember the last time I knew where it was.
HighSorcerer
Mine is in my car and I forget it every time.
Dybidude5
It's about rain, not the age
nuxi7
I recently used one for the first time in decades.
It was nice until it broke.
ExTechOp
I used to use one more when I lived in Central Finland, but here in Helsinki on the coast, when it rains there also is so much wind they are useless.
Feralkyn
Idk man i've never liked them. I have a hooded rain poncho to keep my hands free. It folds up in a TINY pack too, it's great.

davisboy42
Also from the PNW. They're often referred to as "tourist flags" by the locals here
TypicallyVigo
.....how does wearing a raincoat stop you from bringing water inside?
CallMeCourierSix
It runs off into your jeans/slacks/etc. so YOU get to deal with it. Good times.
TypicallyVigo
Hmm, interesting, lot to take into consideration here. I think however, I might stick with my umbrella with umbrella bag combo.
