This is Dresden. He has a goatee, and we named him Dresden because the wife was reading The Dresden Files and she just got to the part with goatee Dresden when we got the cats.

The wife and I rescued him and his girlfriend two years ago. He was three and she was two. They had a rough go of things, brought up in a hoarder house, rescued by a local kitty rescue, sent to a box at PetCo. Adopted by a family with several small kids and dogs that tormented them, sent back to the box.

We got them after that though, but the emotional damage was done. They're good cats, they've never intentionally clawed or bitten us. We give them the best kitty lives we can. Premium food, water fountains (plural) with filtered water, tons of toys, multiple cat trees. Regular vet visits even though they hate it. Always a perfect bill of health, even their teeth.

This is River, the girlfriend. Her tortietude is...maximum.

I love the fuzzy little assholes. I really do. They've always been really...aloof though. We can only pet them on their terms, and their terms always means it's an uncomfortable stretch to do so. We're never allowed to hold them, and snuggles are outright unthinkable.

So for two years we just sort of cohabitated. Living off the occasional pet and watching them chase a ball up and down the hallway.

A solid pet-owning life, if not a little depressing due to lack of any lap time. Two years of being ignored.

But then...

This moment melted me. He's not ON me, but after two years of being ignored he laid down next to me.

Dresden has always been more drawn to me than my wife. I know his body language, his routines, all of it. He's my little soul-cat.

And now...now he's one step closer to accepting me.

Stupid fuzzy asshole. Making me love him all the more.

I havr a boy who has been with me for five years. He is only now getting to the stage of lying down next to me. But he will paw at me to get cuddles, wo that is something.

I love when they finally start opening up <3

Had a cat when I was young that hid. For a couple years, anyone came over, hid. Then, one night my parents had people over, and they were playing some board game. And this cat decided now's the time. She came out, jumped up on the table, and laid on the boardgame while everyone fawned over her. Was a ham the whole rest of her life.

They can surprise ya.

They'll do that. I've had my cat for 11 years, he was 2 when I got him. Came from 2 chaotic homes with small children & a senior cat who wasn't interested in playing with a large (7-8kg) boy. He was hostile to begin with but mellowed. It took a couple of years get sat on occasionally. He's slowly become more affectional, only this year has he started lying on me in bed. They have their own personalities and will reward you for respecting them and earning trust.

Time is essential in gaining cat's trust, especially if the cat is coming from a traumatic experience. Your doing is outstanding, keep it up!

I have a doppelgänger of Dresden minus the goatee! Same mountain peeks on the face and everything, her name is Miko.

I love the mountain peak! The goatee is cool, but the pattern of the peak is my favorite.

It's more or less him growing into his adult life and leaving the kitten "I can take care of myself " attitude out you'll see. I had that with all my cats

Every cat or dog I had before these two were total snuggle sluts.

I had a dog with a similar backstory, on cold days he would sit next to & lean against me, maybe rest his head on me, otherwise he would stay in sight of me, or at best an arms length away even for petting/scratches. He didn't know what toys were at first. Dog parks were his happy place. I miss that little guy every day.

I love that respect is earned with cats. Dogs are just attention sponges.

They accepted you the moment they stopped hiding. The fact that you respect their boundaries just helps them trust you more. Cats are weird and fickle. One month you’re their person, they sleep on your face, they’re glued to your side, the next month they only sleep on the one part of the cat house and nothing else. The next three months they’re someone else’s lap cat. Then they sleep on your chest for a month until that gets annoying and they sit next to you. They’re so neat and special.

And I’m so glad he’s feeling warmed up and safe enough to cuddle with you. Even next to you that way is a cuddle and he’s feeling happy and he loves you.
