The SAVE Act is a solution in search of a problem. Sold as a way to make elections more secure, the restrictive legislation would bar people from registering to vote unless they are able to show a passport or a birth certificate with a name matching their photo.

What immigrant in their right mind would even attempt to vote in the first place and running the risk of being caught? Americans believing this is not only possible but likely are morons. I mean so many of them don't bother to vote when they are certain the guy they want will get in anyway becauae they don't think their vote needs to be added to the pile. Why would they think an immigrant would value their single vote any more than that plus they could be killed doing it?

My guess is that in most cases of immigrants voting is that it's those who have been in the US for a number of years may have gotten the mistaken idea that they can vote for whatever reason (such as paying taxes) or may have received a voter registration form from their county then sent it in.

I had to get my passport for a cruise last year.
It took months, and they mailed it to the wrong address.
It cost almost $200. Go get yours now. If you can. Use your tax return money. Don't wait for them to pass this bill, because even IF they don't (they're having a hard time passing it) he will probably just EO it and face zero backlash.

In Europe it's normal that you have to show your government ID or passport (neither of which are usually free) when voting to prevent people from voting more than once, so this appears like a good thing at first glance. Devil is in the details of course.

One of those details is that it's not intentionally made difficult to get ID in Europe, e.g. by closing offices that can issue these IDs (requiring long car travel that many can't afford) and by having opening hours that most working people can't reasonably use.

I think in Georgia there are only certain places where you can get a valid voter I.D. if you don't have a driver's license which is not uncommon for poor people. So getting to the voter I.D. adminstration center can be difficult, if not impossible, for some. And to be fair multiple republican officials and politicians have stated that fewer voters is a good thing. And, yes, the to-be-fair was sarcasm.

I've always had to show ID (passport or driver's license) to vote. Never thought that would be controversial.
Although the passport price here is about third of what's mentioned in the video and renewing a driver's license is about half of that.

The existing system does require identification to vote, but allows a wider range of methods to identify. The "SAVE" Act eliminates nearly all. In many locations, the ability to get the specific allowed IDs is very restricted and can be costly. There are few offices, only open limited hours on week days, in locations where there isn't any mass transit, and requiring several hours to wait in lines. It's a system designed to control who is able to get the IDs and thus control who can vote.

Because I don't think the problem should be having to provide ID when voting, but lack of access to said ID. And the absolute fuckfest access to voting is in the US with the registration process.
We get mail notification for every upcoming meaningful vote and polls are open for like a week. Oh, and there are approximately one station per 6000 or so people in the country.

How difficult is it for you to obtain said ID?
Is it only available a few days a week and you need an appointment? How difficult is it to register to vote? Is your name required to match your birth certificate? If you failed to vote in the last off year election do you need to go through the registration process again?
The issue isn’t necessarily requiring an ID; the issue is all the obstacles that have been/will be put in place to make getting the ID and voting as difficult as possible.
