I keep getting served this advertisement on social media for this juicy joint extract that’s supposed to heal herniated discs.
Not only is there no clinical trials, but there is only customer testimonials that seems sketchy, I understand there’s tons of products out there that do the exact same thing and lie, but this is just one example of literal snake oil being sold again

if that were how it worked, it would be a good idea to cut people open and sew them back up
the more intense the procedure, the greater the placebo effect
for example, 4 sugar pills a day works better than 2, and a saline injection works better than both because injections feel like "more"

Is it actually made from snakes? If not then it's not "Literal" snake oil, it's "Actual" snake oil, which seems like a weird thing to say, but one is referring to its manufacture and the other is referring to its purpose.

I'd wager that word gets misused more often than it gets used properly, even though the definition is very simple. It gets used for emphasis quite a lot, which makes no sense.

And Webster caved to that shit. It's not like English has many viable rules, and I cannot stand Hetero-graphs, (words that are pronounced the same but spelled differently, like Canon and Cannon. That extra N does not aid in comprehension at all, and cannot be heard when spoken, unlike Your and You're, where the " 're" can be pronounced)

The dictionaries are descriptive, rather than prescriptive. They tell you how people use a word and how you might be understood as a result. Sadly, this means that when it is common to use a word incorrectly it must be added to the definition.
