Mastercard Orders Banks To Ban Cannabis Purchases on Debit Cards

Lots of bad business decisions going on with major corporations. Alas it is the silent hand of capitalism. We should make a bank specifically for weed. Call it Better.

Priceless

...federal government considers cannabis sales illegal by the federal government...

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My guy looked at me funny when I tried to swipe my card. He said “Take your nugs and please don’t put your credit card in my ass again.”

Meanwhile in Canada:

Whoever owns majority stocks in Mastercard must own some in private prisons too.

What was that? Mastercard Orders Banks To Ban Cannabis Purchases on Debit Cards?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Visa - it’s everywhere you want to be

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Mastercard is still in business?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

There are some cannabis things money can buy, for anything else, there’s mastercard

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Don't you love living in a free country where a faceless corporation gets to decide what you can buy because they can choose not to process the transfer?

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Violent robbery of cash it is. Thanks Uncle Sam.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ah yes a mega corporation trying to tell private citizens how they can use their own hard earned money. That’s definitely legal and enforceable

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's not how many states there are

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Legal (for medical purposes) and legal (for non-medical purposes) are two separate things a state can decide. Nevada, for example, ticks both boxes. South Dakota only ticks one. South Carolina ticks neither.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just buy a pack of very expensive matches. Weed comes free with it.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I really do have a problem with a private company telling me what I can and cannot buy. Because they’ve already made those decisions for us about adult content, and now about what I can legally purchase in my state using my card from my local, in-state credit union.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

And fuck you whoever downvoted me, fucking capitalist bootlicker

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Laughs in Canadian

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1) how would anyone even know what I'm buying? and 2) go buy Visa stock, they're about to get a shit ton of new customers.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

many cannabis stores are blacklisted, banks and payment companies won't work with them since it's still illegal federally. That's why so many of them are cash-only

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Guess they want to lose money. All well. I’ll cry all the way to my Visa card.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$3 ATM fee outside works for them

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cool beans. I use Visa anyways. Oh and I’m Canadian so suck it MasterCard 🖕🏻🤭🇨🇦

Why? Fuck ‘em! Fuck corpos

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Meanwhile these motherfuckers are charging 30% interest rates on credit cards. You get a better deal from mafia. It’s time to start…

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

They are charging almost 30% interest because people don't pay back their credit cards, CC debt is dischargable in bankruptcy, and they aren't giving away money as part of a charity. But feel free to cashapp/PayPal me $1000 and show the world how wrong I am.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 8

Lmao ohhhh yeah they are charging higher interest because they are losing money… 😂😂

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Like I said. Feel free to send me $1k and show Visa/MasterCard how great you are at finance. Oh - that's right. You won't put your money where your mouth is.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They didn't say you can't buy cannabis with a Mastercard credit card.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck. Mastercard.

3 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 5

How dare they follow the law! Not following the law puts them at legal risk... That aside, most dispensaries are cash only anyway. So this isn't that big of a deal.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 21

Did you know MasterCard regularly also fucks with and denies services to merchants and customers who want products legal in all 50 states? Because they do. Personally, I have a problem with the only ways to make online purchases making my buying decisions *for me*.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mastercard follows federal law. The issue here is federal law. We need to fix that. Mastercard would love to get transaction fees for this - all they care about is money.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Not really. They continue to fuck with anyone in sex adjacent industries, including ones that are 100% legal and ethical. Those make quite a bit of money. MasterCard has been caving to pressure from evangelical groups for a while now.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are you talking about adult websites? Mastercard and Visa put restrictions there because their cards were being used to pay for child porn and revenge porn. The main restriction they made is adult websites need to confirm the age and consent of performers before hosting the content. That seems reasonable to me. If that's too much for you, I guess we are just different there.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I mean, that's about money, too. Sex adjacent industries are still pretty taboo, societally. They cave because they're worried it'll hurt them financially

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So... There's something MasterCard ISN'T for. Interesting. This goes counter to their classic marketing. They aren't at any legal risk, so really they're just making themselves less competitive unless both Visa and Discover are gonna copy the move. But again, hurting themselves sooo...

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or NSFW merchandise!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, seeing as that is from last year and yet more and more of my local dispensaries take my card directly, I'm not super worried about it.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can I still use my Mastercard to chop lines of coke?

3 years ago | Likes 636 Dislikes 1

Fancy pants with your Mastercard, I got a blastercard that I found in my pastors yard, different kind of credit tho

3 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 1

It’s not really the banks’ fault. The federal government needs to get with the program and legalize cannabis. But of course it won’t because Republicans.

3 years ago | Likes 446 Dislikes 10

I'm not sure if this is the article, but the one I read did go on to say that Mastercard is supporting legalization efforts at the federal level (why not, more transactions = more money). This really is just a matter of the law-as-it's-written.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

ya sad stuff that doesnt harm user really or those around is illegal yet booze, smoking cigs, etc are harmful to user & possibly those around em and are legal :|

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If it was, why are they only doing this now? Especially after their sex adjacent merchant ban?

I guess you don’t know how the senate filibuster works.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

When dems had control...hmmm... When Obama was in office, since then, Dems never had control of both senate and house. No one that knows history is going to pretend the 1 vote majority in the senate was real with Sinema and Manchin.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Blame the democrats for Republicans blocking it at every turn? That's just brilliant, dude. Like how do you even to exist with this intellect level?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Ya fuck the republicans ! They can fucking suck it 😜

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's a legal loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill that allows the sale of <0.3% THCD9 cannabis at smoke shops. Just 21 or older shops. I use my mastercard at the store, pay sales tax, better pot than street stuff when I was younger. They even have prerolls in case my arthritis is acting up particularly bad. At least one smoke shop in every little business outless

3 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

For those who don't get why this is a problem, it creates businesses that don't get a lot of police protection as is that have large amounts of cash on hand. These are prime locations for dickheads to try and rob. Best case, they steal all the money and potentially kill the business. Worst case, someone dies.

3 years ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 4

The IRS in CA had to install bulk drive-up windows where dispo owners would pull up to pay their taxes. Fucking stupid.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, stop making moral judgement for me MasterCard. Fuck you. 🖕🏻

3 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Counter 1: does not sell weed, is a seperate business, sells some things. Hash cash out. Counter 2: Sells weed, takes cash. Counter 2 rents their counter from counter 1 business and its all paid in cash.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's probably why I have to have my ID checked before I'm let through a locked door that has armed security to buy my weed.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thats exactly why.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hold up - this also makes it harder to track and effectively tax sales! (Silver lining: if tax revenues fall off, then this might incentivize states to push for federal legislation.)

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Also, they only take debit card purchases. You can't pay for cannabis with a credit card it has to be some form of cash deposit. It was recent here in Florida that we could use our debit/bank account cards for a small fee. So what Mastercard is saying is you cannot use your money that you use us to store for a legal purchase in your area, but since it's not federally protected, I don't want anything to do with it? Naw son, this is an attack on green. Again lol. Three words: ATM lol.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gets even worse. there is a case of the police pulling over a private armored car moving money for dispensaries and yoinking the cash under civil asset forfeiture.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hear you but to be honest a lot of weed shops only take cash anyways

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not to mention the police doing civil asset forfeitures on armored car companies know to haul the cash for dispensaries. https://reason.com/2022/01/18/kansas-and-california-cops-used-civil-forfeiture-to-stage-armored-car-heists-stealing-money-earned-by-licensed-marijuana-businesses/

3 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

I get that they can take things form civilians, but how in the fuck is taking that amount of cash from a legal private comapany square in anyone's eyes/

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seems like an armored car company might have the funds and legal team to take on the city.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It might, but it won't. Because that costs more money than just no serving those companies.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

... Jesus Fuckin' Christ, America. Your own cops are now just straight up pulling off heists and getting away with it.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

that's cool, i'll just use my Discover card.

3 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 1

Dispensaries can't accept credit cards as it's considered a transaction that crosses state lines (and can become a felony), hence debit or cash only

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

oh cool so those times i've used my out of state debit card to buy weed has, once again, turned me in to a criminal!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Somehow that doesn't seem to be the case from what I've had explained at the counter in several states.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry, we don't take Discover.

3 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

That hasn't been an issue in like 10 years.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But.... But the memes!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Is this even a problem? I’ve only been able to pay for my weed with cash.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

It's not.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

having a lot of cash on-hand is uh, not great for the business owner that will have that much more to lose in case of a robbery

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I purchase in Chicago and Chicagoland area with my cards all the time. I dunno if it’s a state thing or a bank thing.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cash? The stores in the USA don't allow card?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Many stores are forced to be cash only because most banks/payment processing companies won't work with them (weed is still technically illegal on the federal level). This is pretty unique specifically to weed, because of the split in laws where it's legal in some states at the state level but still illegal at the federal. (there are a few other cases like a few gas stations, b/c the card fees are so high relative to gas profit margins)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Intriguing. I'm in Canada. The government sells you weed hahaha

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah, we're on the way towards legalization, but passing federal laws is slow as fuck. We'll get there eventually, probably within the next decade or so, writing is on the wall

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That would be nice

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well the old method was to sell it in the bathroom of schools for small wads of cash, and some of them want to keep the nostalgia.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hahah. No doubt. Now where I live the government sells it to ya

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

None of the ones I’ve been to. But I’ve only bought from dispensaries in 4 different states.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Some in New Mexico do, but the pin pads are just basically ATMs so you get the "not my bank" ATM fee, and from the bank you get the "not one of our ATM" fees, so like $6 more than just paying cash

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ahh. I'm in Canada and you can use anything.
