Pretty sure the whole "starship troopers" uniforms were supposed to resemble the Naxis.

I hear Hugo Boss has experience making this kind of thing.

How many assholes we got on this ship? YO

"Real," who knows. Apparently it was posted on socials by Trump? And he can be tricked into posting just about anything; half his shit is AI-gen. It was probably a repost of a mockery someone else posted, not a real design.

I mean, nearly a year ago, a Marine Corps company commander literally held a speech that was basically ripped right out of Helldivers 2, plus the theme song as sendoff........

Oh the irony, given that HD is meant to shit on the US and their warcrime behaviour specifically....

The risk with satire is that some take it seriously

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Secretary of Defense quoted a fake bible verse from Pulp Fiction. Nobody was surprised.

I think there is a law that says some people will look at parody and satire and take it seriously, but I forget what it is called

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I think you may be thinking of Poe’s Law.

No thats the inability to comprehend sarcasm through text.

Ein Volk, Ein Reich -- Ein FUBAR...

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The part I hate the most on a personal level is that I find the whole "putting on the Reich" trope to be quite aesthetically pleasing. Snappy, sharp, all black with shiny bits makes my brain happy.
Then I remember everything it's CONNECTED to and it makes my brain sad.

"Inspired by the discipline and functionality of THE STARSHIP TROOPER UNIFORM"
Whoever made this knew what they were doing, and the idiot rotted pumpkin that re-posted it was too dumb to recognize the reference.
(* to be un-missably clear, the government in Starship Troopers was explicitly fascist and officer uniforms took direct visual inspiration from Nazi uniforms. The inspiration for your inspiration is Nazis, because you want to be Nazis but even dumber).

When I first saw this movie in high school I thought, man those uniforms really resemble WW2 nazi uniforms. I later learned it was not a fluke and was in fact the authors goal. Without knowing, I knew. As a high achool kid. And yet people today, well, here we are.

Director, he lived in occupied Netherlands. Movie borrowed the universe etc. But not the same story.

1 month ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Eapecially the officers, always thought Neil Patrick Harris looked like straightup gestapo

Also learned later that it was intentional

As the tale goes, Paul Verhoeven made the whole thing so massively on-the-nose to prove that fascist fanboys would misunderstand it even then. This might be a factoid, but it seems plausible for the man.

The book is libertarian though

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I wouldn't quite put it that way. Although I appreciate the author for his later works, I view the novel *Starship Troopers* as a depiction of a fascist form of society, characterized by authoritarianism, militarism, and anti-individualism. Heinlein was serious about it. There are no signs of irony, satire, or sarcasm.

My impression across his body of work was a series of genuine attempts to examine various ideologies on their own terms, which generally means looking for satire or irony is the wrong lense to bring to his books in general. I've never gotten the impression that SST is explicitly intended to glorify fascism, but being written from the perspective of a character steeped in that system definitely requires detaching from him a bit to actually analyze the events and policies portrayed. The opening of the book with the raid against the Skinnies is a good example. It's written as fast paced military action but it's explicitly portraying a terror raid against a civilian population, a monstrous act made acceptable to Rico by his belief in the system he's been indoctrinated into. It's not the brick to head tier satire of Verhoven's adaptation, but IMO the book's examination of fascism still subjects it to critique due the fact it's an inherently flawed and monstrous ideology.

It was also, in many ways, a critique against the Vietnam draft, preferring highly trained and equipped volunteer soldiers over drafted fodder. Individuals could run businesses without too much interference, just couldn't vote without service. It's definitely militaristic nonsense

I stand corrected 🤙

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All his books are douchy

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I don't see it that way. Influenced by the post-World War II United States, Heinlein's early works are distinctly anti-communist and pre-fascist in tone. But he gradually moved away from that and eventually went on to write a few good books.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For the record, Verhoeven fucking hated the book.

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Above all, he grasped the fascist vision of society correctly and, in my view, translated it into a film in an outstanding manner.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And the writer hates the movie

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It fucking shows.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I should have explicitly stated I meant the movie, but limited characters.

The end state of libertarianism is corporate fascism. If there's no government for the people to regulate industry, industry will regulate the populace.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Is this real? Besides the fascist look, in no other service branch does anyone under general/admiral wear a fucking star as rank insignia.

Still doesn't make it real. Here is the the actual space force service dress.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You do see that the image he posted said "next generation" right? Like it's not what is being used right now

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The current space force service dress is the "next gen uniform" that was only just approved for use earlier this year. The fact that it was just approved means it's highly improbable that they will change away from it any time soon. If the intention is the change it then it would need to be added to an NDAA and then spend the next 3 to 6 years in development and procurement.
