When I flew to Poland. Everyone clapped when we landed. I was very confused. Told my bf ( now hubby) he's polish. And his very Polish dad says " we had Soviet planes, it was more common to crash than land. You always clapped"

I remember being on a plane once and as the pilot landed, the one person on the flight that was clearly American stood up, clapped a couple of times, then looked around at everyone staring at him, then sheepishly sat back down again. I loved this.

Yeah, Musk's DOGE chop shop showed up at the FAA offices yesterday, and word on the #altgov street (the folks inside the government that are trying to push back against the internal Trusk disaster) is that the existing FENS network is going to be replaced by Starlink, which is just about EVERY RED FLAG IMAGINABLE.
If true, that means he could (would!) turn on or off the ability for individual airports to coordinate flights on a whim.

It’s tough. I’m a former senior software analyst turned musician, so my work now requires travel. However, I don’t have visibility to what is changing and when, outside of published accounts of workforce reductions in ATC, so I only know that a dangerous group is trying to meddle with air travel and is targeting the systems infrastructure next. I’m pretty risk-averse so I’ve cancelled one trip, but have a few I’m leaving on the books until I have better data…but fuck me, it’s all red flags.

The original comment about high-speed rail system has nothing to do with the image above, and nothing to do with a discussion of air travel safety. And for most people who fly in the United States - high-speed rail would not meet their needs.

It’s disingenuous to engage in a subject change in order to post your disagreement, and then defend your disagreement by complaining that it was because the subject changed. The root of your position is that you don’t think rail is a viable substitute for domestic air travel, which is a privileged position. My experience in countries with established rail tells me that the cost difference is such that more people would have more travel options that they don’t currently have.

I engaged in the subject change to point out how irrelevant the subject change was to the discussion at hand. That is not disingenuous. While we're on the subject, high-speed rail makes a LOT more sense when hopping between densely populated countries with overly busy hub airports - and less sense when you have a single country with thousands of miles of mostly empty terrain.

Doesn't even have to be high speed as long as there's frequent trains so you don't wait around for half an hour waiting for one. I'd do what the British do, have a pub at the train station, maybe the pub also sells some food (A classic pub food in Norway used to be hamburger patty on bread with egg on top). And frequent trains. And wifi and charging ports on the trains. Then people won't really care how fast the trains are.
