28 years ago in a community college class, my professor called the US an "oligarchic plutocracy".

That's nonsense. the US has a binary system, and it is because a choice made by the voters. There is nothing stopping americans from voting differently. And saying they don't is just absolving them of responsibility and treating them like poor innocent sheep with no agency. Ballots count and the results are self evident to what the average american wants.

The US is literally an oligarchy. Oligarchy is not democratic. They let you vote so you have the false sense of influence over which controlled opposition corporatist gets to be the head oligarchy puppet for the next 4 years, so we don't revolt and demand a true democracy.
I'm literally a sociologist. The study of societies is what I went to college for.
