The scene in HBOs 'From the Earth to the Moon' when they first see the earth rise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlV2YtCUnpg
And the rest of the episode, which is very good: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x447gbl

KenjiMuyo
So the earth is dome shaped, not flat????
xunatham

HenryLongfellowIII
Every human who has ever stood on another world will be dead before many more years go by. Only 4 are left of the 12.
thisisausernamelikeanyothersbutthisonesmellsweird
50 years ago. 3 dudes sat in a tiny metal box. orbiting the moon.. Trapped with there own farts and smells. To capture the first earthrise.
Imroy
Much more than farts. The cabin absolutely stank by the time they got back.
killernerd
isn't that the mission where nasa underfueled the lander stage because they were afraid they'd try and land it against their orders?
TheTruthHurts51
What balls they had.
WisconsinCentral2714
They also read from the Book of Genesis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njpWalYduU4

I'm a Muslim, but this still brought tears to my eyes. Humanity... simply incredible!
NotRapefortheWilling
Never knew, thanks.
And NASA were sued because of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_8_Genesis_reading

Amazing, I remember 7/8yo being excited to meet Tom Hanks ended up being an old man. I was still excited and asked him a bunch of questions.
That was back in '96 meeting my mom's Godfather at Sheraton when he was visiting for an event with the Boy Scouts in Anchorage.

Flat Earthers will say this is the first time Photoshop was used to fool the public, and Mr Adobe took his product to new heights after this
mtuunanen
I wonder, what % of "flat earthers" are just plain trolls?
TheLazyAfricanLion
Lucky they got the flat earth from the top side.

Ok, but when exactly was it Christmas for them? What time zone is space?
hockeyham
Yes
Scarbiker
The Apollo missions used EST I assume it's because that's because they launched from a place using it.
Ignore the stupid extra because XD
digitaljedi42
Aaaand the picture is sideways... Proper orientation is with the moon on the right.
lolzomg123
"proper orientation" like there's an up or down in zero g.
No, but there was a relative up and down for the humans that took the photo. Bill Anders took this photo with the moon on his right.
klean9
Watched it as it happened
zhukoz
Watched the moon landing when I was 2, only barely remember it but I do remember Armstrong's boot leaving the imprint. Went outside that
2/ night, expecting to look up at the moon and see them; was disappointed lol
I hope you don't mind me asking, but what was it like to watch Man take it's first steps off of our planet? My parents were too young 1/2
to really understand and appreciate what was going on, they just knew it was something big. 2/2
xumokoyapi004sugar
First foot print in New Mexico
I was 14. We watched ALL the launches even during school. It was a big deal. Very exciting. The astronauts read from Genesis ...1/2
...as they circled. My mother got teary eyed. AND we did it before the USSR, which was also a big deal
cable001
Could you imagine seeing that from space. Knowing your hundreds of thousands of miles away from earth, and near Christmas, just crazy.
dontrike
Could you imagine seeing that from space and not knowing 50 years later people would say not only did they not go there, but earth is flat.
BuskerJeff
You think they care? Someone needs to be pretty important for me to care about their opinion.
procamac111
Amazing and terrifying all at the same time.
Exactly.
Bad enough when you know you're an 8 hour flight away from your nearest friend.

Standing somewhere else looking at a place where every other human being had lived and died throughout the entirety of history, and hiding
it behind your thumb.

imagine is all we can do since no one ever went to the fucking moon because the moon is a fucking hologram.
The stars too? is reality real? Do we exist in the traditional sense, or is this the matrix?
yes
And 1968 was a shitty year for America, so it was more poetic. Watch From the Earth to the Moon: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x447gbl

Knowing that every man and woman has died on that blue gem of the cosmos..
There's a dubious rumor there are Soviet remains on the moon.
BenSnow97
100% sure they didn't even get there, the Soyuz is just not powerful enough and the N-1 never had a successful launch
