Some orders do in point of fact have mat leave, they have to continue the bloodlines somehow. Of course most kids will end up in the scholar proginia because Battle brats and guardsmen live lives measured in cups of recaf.

The 40k setting is nice in that way because the Imperium is so terrifyingly large scale there could very well be whole planets that are just Earth 2.0. One of my favourite Dark Heresy game's I've born witness to was a police procedural on a pre-hive world.
I am still an inner sphere merc at heart but 40K is always fun to play around with.
