while i hate that they dont lower prices, at least i know what i get when pay the price. not like 95% of the games released atm, a bugged shitfest that runs in 10 fps on console because they cant even optimize for a fixed hardware.
Every Nintendo game the person mentioned with the exception of Luigi's Mansion 2 would be more than $60 on their respective original platforms "after inflation" on the days of the Switch releases, and even with Luigi's Mansion 2, they didn't simply port it. It's $40 price on March 2013 is around $54 today, so what you get for an additional $6 is a remaster that comes with new models, new textures, and definitely more stability in performance. As for that last game, that's not Nintendo.
Sold my Switch and bought a Steam Deck almost two years ago. Nintendo has just been getting worse since then with no sign that the Switch will ever improve.
'Every enterprise, from business to religion to politics, that has the potential for wealth and power, will soon attract those who covet wealth and power'... MM
I really enjoyed his content but for a good while it felt like every video he made was fallout. Not only that but he even remastered one video too. Out me off watching to be honest
For remaking and remastering old games at people's request, then charging a standard - slightly lower than market average - price for them? Yeah, fuck those guys for... Uhh... Doing what people ask them to do
No, fuck Nintendo for porting old games and charging $60. FOR A PORT. Fuck Nintendo for failing to update the hardware in their massively obsolete handheld which has been the root cause of performance problems in new Switch games for half a decade. Fuck Nintendo for tying cloud saves to a subscription service. Shall I continue?
What a disingenuous argument. They're charging AAA game prices for games that have already been made. The hard part is done--Nintendo is just upscaling and adding a few details. Even if this were extremely labor-intensive, there is no justification for charging the same price as a brand new AAA game that was created from scratch.
Wii-U had reasonably priced games... but that was probably just because that console did terribly due to bad marketing. Good console with a solid game lineup, most of which are getting half-assed switch ports at jacked up prices. Bought most of my wii-U games for $30-45 retail.
It's still an amazing value. Buy a Wii U for $50 and hack it. Can play GameCube, Wii and Wii U games natively plus 8-bit and 16- bit games through emulation. Add a USB hard drive and you're good to go.
When was the last thing they came out with that was original? Hell... when did their last console come out? March of 2017? ALMOST 8 YEARS AGO? Oooh... we upgraded the screen to OLED. We remastered these old classics to work on the switch. Oooh... man, shut up! Do something new already. I haven't touched my switch in months. I was at the Nintendo store Friday evening. The NYC one. NOBODY was playing the games save for a few children. It's old. And tired. I said what I said.
If you want a new game, Mario & Luigi Brothership released last month. It's not the best in the M&L series, in fact it may even be the worst, but it's not bad.
What a bizarrely senseless argument. They released several brand new titles this year. They also have the most consistent reputation for quality, especially of first party exclusives, of any of the "big three". Meanwhile, owning a PS5 just means you get to pay 20% more for the beta test of a game that'll be on PC in 6 months.
Bizarrely senseless? Have you been paying ANY attention to the performance problems that every new switch game has had for the past few years? The Switch's hardware was obsolete on arrival and the damn thing has aged like milk. I'd love to play a lot of Switch games at 60FPS legitimately, but Nintendo won't let us! This is why people emulate and pirate shit. I sold my Switch to buy a Deck and the latter runs games at 60FPS that the former struggles to run at 30FPS. Nintendo fanboys are nuts.
My PC and Playstation never had the same level of consistent performance problems that the Switch did. It's not even close. Also to all my downvoters: touch grass, you greasy fanboys
It is fucking hilarious to read your little fuming rant and then have you turn around and tell others to "touch grass", fuck's sake you must live in a world without self-awareness.
It had a few minor quality of life improvements (fast travel was reworked, and they had more controller buttons to work with). And they removed the photographer and all his shenanigans, instead placing a basically useless Dungeon Maker in its place. Did they even include the color dungeon? I have no recollection of that.
It's not higher, it's standard price. It's a wonderful 15-20 hour game that my wife loved which makes it worth the price of admission and it is my favorite loz game remade in a way that kept true to the original but had a lot of care put into it - something you don't see a lot these days. Id argue links awakening on switch is a better value than most switch games
Always found the presence of hentai games on the Nintendo online store weird. No other console markets itself so clearly towards kids and families, yet there it is. First you find a game about an alligator playing with his friends, and right next to it you find a cartoon online brothel simulator. It does make sense… if you assume big N is out to make as much money as possible.
Fun fact, Dk64 used the memory module to cover up a memory leak they couldn't fix in time for launch. The game runs fine without it, but it'll crash from lack of RAM in under 2 hours
Not really. Most games were $50. A Sega 32X game might have been $60 here or there, and there might have been outliers, but that is why “Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire” being $70 was so jarring; because it was $20 over the typical price point. SMBros AllStars had multiple games with upped graphics so for its time it was a bargain. StarFox and DKC had advanced hardware. It also took a month to build a render of Rambi’s head the first time, so…(source: the teaser VHS for DKC)
The first Ford Model T cars cost more at launch than their equivalents did 25 years later. That's what happens when a new emerging market turns into an established market with more competition. Also the price of a new Model T dropped massively in that time which would be the most relevant comparison
That's sort of how the established market competition thing works. Pre-existing systems get improved and refined so it becomes easier to redo an old thing compared to doing the first thing originally... and the cost reflects that
I don't quite understand. Video games aren't manufacturing and they've grown exponentially *more* complex over the years, there's hundreds of times *more* people working on them now. The cost has gone up an unimaginable amount.
Whether or not that cost is *justified* is a different question (marketing budgets, for instance)
For comparison though, buying a cartridge that works with a SNES and can load a ROM from a flash card? Even with the advances in electronics in the past 30 years you're still looking at $80-100 for a basic model (Super Everdrive X6), and $200-250 for one that will work with the SuperFX chip or other addons (FXPak Pro).
Isn't that because no one is making/buying this hardware, though? You can't compare obsolete niche hardware today with common place household hardware from the 90s
The scale, and "common", are relative though. Super Mario World sold 20 million copies when it was a commonly bundled game. Street Fighter 2 Turbo was the best-selling non-bundled game for the SNES, with 4 million copies. Wii Sports sold 80 million copies. Meanwhile, these Flash Carts likely aren't sold in huge numbers, but they're built around off-the-shelf FPGAs that are used all sorts of places. There's only a little bit of custom hardware to interface with the SNES.
True. But that was for a game that cost more to actually produce the physical material. It also wasn't a remake, which requires substantially less effort.
I would say it's the difference between a remake and a remaster. A remaster makes the base game look better. A remake builds the game from the ground up with new technology. e.g. a transition from 2D to 3D. So you would really only take the design of the world and story from the base game. At least that's what I would expect
There's also the issue that a lot of games companies are deliberately removing the original from sale when they release and remaster/ remake. Which is blatantly admitting that they don't think the price of the new version is worth it.
In the UK $60 translates to £50 (pretty fair), but every physical release is CHEAPER than the digital version, usually about £43) Which is weird, but I'm not complaining.
I only own physical games for my consoles. And buy console most of the time. I love my pc but the fact I can’t get physical games really pisses me off so unless it’s only on pc I generally don’t buy it for that
Your understanding is incorrect. The majority of game data is on the switch cartridge, you just download updates, and as has been proven through jailbroken devices and emulators, you don't need any kind of online connection to play.
Thanks for the correction. But is it possible, without mods, to play a game on a switch offline? If the answer is no, then I feel like you're winning on a technicality.
Not all of them, granted, its moreof an exception still, but there are games that are digital only. Got Bioshock collection for birthday, its a box for a downloadcode in it. Theres a special badge for it “download only” they put on the box.
Im pretty sure we are going to see more of that, probably the other consoles first (physical media is an option, itll disappear completely)
And the consoles will keep removing physical media and charge more for less. The next playstation will just be a frame and you have to buy the hard drives, power supply and so forth separately and it still won't be as good as a cheap pc.
Same. Once again, lengthy demos for games, I usually pirate a game and play for couple hours (a demos worth lets say) and if it really grabs me I'll buy it. I have 30hrs on pirated stalker but I'm definitely gonna buy it when I can.
There are even some very nice Console Like options out there: Like the Beelink Ser8 with the 8845hs in it (600USD). Chimera OS loads on it, then you have full Console experience with Steam. Alternate you use the Win 11 and Autostart Big Picture. It is close to a normal PS5 in GPU Power. Same iGPU as the ROG ALLY X but with higher limits.
I told 4chan that I bought a Switch lite because I couldn't get Zelda/Mario games to work right on neither the Ryujinx and Yuzu. They were not kind...Apparently, everyone knows how to configure these emulators to work but me.
I never know either but I just ask for help on some discord or reddit. There's always someone willing to babystep you through the process. Like, literally. 100% of the time I get all the help anyone could need.
It can be a bitch to get running tho, some contain the firmwares and binaries and whatnot (which are the most illegal parts), if they dont and you are expected to acquire them and install them yourself, well, shit definitely aint that clearcut for non technical ppl
I deal with software all the time as a developer. I’m pretty comfortable in most environments if you ever need some help I’d be happy to look through docs they provide and help you search for configuring things in the future if needed.
It's not just that they price their games high, its that they're seemingly allergic to any kind of sale of any game anyone actually wants to play ever.
A lot of Nintendo fans aren't gaming fans but JUST Nintendo fans so they get away with more than any other publisher could out of ignorance and brand loyalty
I'd argue it's still costing them though. There's a very large portion of the market Nintendo isn't serving. Those who can't afford $60 for a game (or just don't think it's worth it), those who want to play on other platforms for whatever reason.
They're the only publisher left who just... doesn't provide options. And the market is increasingly rejecting that. Also makes them extremely dependent on how well their consoles sell.
That's probably true and, unlike other publishers, seem to be content with consistency over growth. Which I'm mostly on board with except they really abuse their core fans with artificial scarcity and bullshit like amiibos and also bad service such as refusing to acknowledge known issues like joycon drift. They can probably be carried indefinitely by being the only game in town for handhelds and core Nintendo franchises
It's not actually that consistent though. Switch 2 won't have the same install base from the start (and might not even get there at all). Making games for that exclusively will miss out on a lot of sales, that could quite easily be offset by just releasing cross-platform. I imagine investors will be asking these questions soon. Especially with Sony going cross-platform as well and showing it has no impact on hardware sales.
I can respect the $60 in this case. I won't buy it at that price but I can respect it. The complete overhaul from 8-bit to modern standards plus some new content is hard to call an excessive rip off to old fans and new players. I'll wait till I can get it for $40 or I can get the DQ 1+2 2DHD remakes at the same time.

Elkarlo1977

Goldensands
I never know either but I just ask for help on some discord or reddit. There's always someone willing to babystep you through the process. Like, literally. 100% of the time I get all the help anyone could need.
Imustupvotealltacos
Tbf it was kind of a bastard to get going
q34tw4
I didnt even know this was a thing. I have to do some research because I REFUSE TO PAY NINTENDO PRICES
MeatPopsicleMultiPass
I'd be more embarassed admitting you posted on 4chan.
Z0op
It can be a bitch to get running tho, some contain the firmwares and binaries and whatnot (which are the most illegal parts), if they dont and you are expected to acquire them and install them yourself, well, shit definitely aint that clearcut for non technical ppl
OlofBorrbrottsson
Since when is kindness something you’d expect on 4chan?
gravyandfries
I deal with software all the time as a developer. I’m pretty comfortable in most environments if you ever need some help I’d be happy to look through docs they provide and help you search for configuring things in the future if needed.
DoopHeadquarters
Also why are there so many Mario Party games?
GravyEducation
I never liked Mario Party. Can we stick to an actually fun game
johnxbear
Found the guy that had 6 stars and lost them/was overshadowed by bonus stars at the end of the game.
GravyEducation
Nah man it was just the game we played in between smash and Mario Kart. It is clearly the less fun of the three and takes a while to play through.
InoffensivePablum
He likes to party. He likes, he likes to party.
johnxbear
Because they have a million ideas for mini games but no idea how to flesh them out into full games they can charge........ $60.00 for.
DoopHeadquarters
I would gladly buy an expansion
johnxbear
$60.00
DoopHeadquarters
Trelis
Because people keep buying them.
DoopHeadquarters
True unfortunately. This can be said for a lot of junk we put up with nowadays.
Trelis
If people enjoy them, why not let them have it? Your enjoyment of other games shouldn't need the approval of all gamers.
TheAccursedHamster
It's not just that they price their games high, its that they're seemingly allergic to any kind of sale of any game anyone actually wants to play ever.
BlueDsc
Every single Switch game I own was bought at a discount. Hell, I just picked up Pikmin 4 for half off.
marsilies
There's sales, but what they don't do is drop the MSRP. You can get Zelda Tears of the Kingdom for $30 right now. https://www.dekudeals.com/
LittlePinkAnimal
Katamari damacy reroll for $4 and Mr. Driller drill land for $3, are both fucking amazing deals for great games. Too bad I already own them, haha.
marsilies
There's two Katamari games on Switch: "Katamari Damacy REROLL", and "We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie," the latter is the one on sale right now.
Youhavinagiraffe
A lot of Nintendo fans aren't gaming fans but JUST Nintendo fans so they get away with more than any other publisher could out of ignorance and brand loyalty
Wolfos
I'd argue it's still costing them though. There's a very large portion of the market Nintendo isn't serving. Those who can't afford $60 for a game (or just don't think it's worth it), those who want to play on other platforms for whatever reason.
They're the only publisher left who just... doesn't provide options. And the market is increasingly rejecting that. Also makes them extremely dependent on how well their consoles sell.
BlueDsc
The Switch has a very real chance at becoming the highest selling console of all time. The Market can't be rejecting it that hard.
Youhavinagiraffe
That's probably true and, unlike other publishers, seem to be content with consistency over growth. Which I'm mostly on board with except they really abuse their core fans with artificial scarcity and bullshit like amiibos and also bad service such as refusing to acknowledge known issues like joycon drift. They can probably be carried indefinitely by being the only game in town for handhelds and core Nintendo franchises
Wolfos
It's not actually that consistent though. Switch 2 won't have the same install base from the start (and might not even get there at all). Making games for that exclusively will miss out on a lot of sales, that could quite easily be offset by just releasing cross-platform.
I imagine investors will be asking these questions soon. Especially with Sony going cross-platform as well and showing it has no impact on hardware sales.
metroid2
Dragon quest 3 remake $60. Then you get these fan boys trying to justify the price
Gonetogetsomemilk
The worst part is they’re selling games at 70$ that are unplayable on their console, example Doom on the switch runs at 5 fps.
metroid2
Ya I have a Switch and a PS4. 90% of the time if a game is available on both I get it on ps4. A much better experience and I also like the trophies.
eppykaze
I can respect the $60 in this case. I won't buy it at that price but I can respect it. The complete overhaul from 8-bit to modern standards plus some new content is hard to call an excessive rip off to old fans and new players. I'll wait till I can get it for $40 or I can get the DQ 1+2 2DHD remakes at the same time.
abcdefg912
I'm sorry, "modern standards"? Did you mean modern for 30 years ago?
eppykaze
30 years ago was the SNES and Windows 95, so go ahead and try to run the game on either if you think that's what I meant.
abcdefg912
Sorry, 25 years. That certainly left my point in tatters.
