I wish this was satire.

It's "sapiens" in both singular and plural. Present active verb tense (the "-ing" form) of the Latin sapio, meaning "wise" or "to discern". Homo sapiens = the discerning human.

To be fair to the one woman who once saw a homo sapiens picking his what--dilly at the zoo, I've seen this myself as well. It isn't pleasant.

Some people pay money to see homo sapiens picking their what-a-dillies

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

At the zoo, on the bus, in the mall, on the tv during the Presidential debates…

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I've seen it on a NYC subway.

I don't like very many homo sapiens so my close friend circle is very small

3 years ago | Likes 172 Dislikes 1

But do they pick their what-a-dilly's? Thats important i hear.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Well, most hairy homo sapiens I know do…

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Right?! My non-homo-sapien friend is my dog.

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Idiots gonna idiot.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

What the fuck is wrong with just saying, "I don't know what that is"?

3 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 0

It doesn't make for "good TV"

What? And look stupid?

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." - Attributed to Abraham Lincoln (since as early as 1923), but the earliest provable source is someone named Maurice Switzer in 1907. (And, for all we know, it may have been inspired by older, differently-worded sayings. Or maybe not. Who knows?)

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm guessing a good lot of them didn't understand the question clearly. But yeah, they chose to show the most entertaining uneducated ones.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Americans aren't wrong, they're 'temporarily embarrassed'. It's a cultural thing.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Temporarily embarrassed homo sapiens

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fake it till you make it.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The people who said that don't make the edit. If you go around anywhere and ask enough people questions, even if the vast majority give intelligent answers, you're always going to find a handful who are idiots or who are just woefully confused on a given subject.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

It's more popular to shit out your opinion, than it is to ask a question.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

It's important to remember, they might have had 200 people say as much. You're only seeing the ones they selected to show you.

3 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 1

Most of them are Americans, so nope.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 11

Haha yeah only ONE country in the entire world has stupid people!

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Sure, but even for those few, what the fuck is wrong with just asking for clarification?

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It sounds like these people had something specific in mind. That's an easy enough mistake to make, mishear something once and just never get corrected on it, or told something wrong by someone else who had that happen. It's people just making shit up instead of admitting they don't know that sucks.

The Republican plant to "keep 'em ignorant so they're easy to fool" is working way too well.

3 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 5

Yeah I dont see this as "people are stupid", I see this as "education standards are low enough to allow this to happen often enough that this person was able to find multiple people in one day who didnt know it just meant 'humans'."

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I've been to school. Trust me, there are plently of people deliberately trying to not let anything sink in. It's a weird "popularity" thing.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And there always have been, but without seeing all of the (probably cut) people who knew what homo-sapiens meant to compare to the eejits that we do see its admittedly difficult to judge how common this problem actually is from this clip.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's no way this isn't satire. You can't convince me. I don't want to be convinced.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

were* satire

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

I mean, "homo sapiens" means wise humans. But we've learned that at least 1/3rd of our population is neither wise nor capable of empathy of social cooperation. Perhaps they aren't "homo sapiens" after all, but rather "homo egoisticus"

These people vote. It’s important we vote, too, to keep teaching those that come after us.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I mean... some of them aren't wrong. They're big, hairy, prone to picking their what-a-dillys. We don't need 'em, though, so let 'em die.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are these lizard people?

While there are a lot of stupid people out there, let's not forget that when videos like this are made, all the people who DID know the facts accurately don't make it to the screen. Plus, I can see where someone on the street in front of a camera might have a "brain fart" and answer like one of these people because in their nervousness, they were thinking of a different definition for the term.

Biological anthro coming in handy! This makes me Erectus. Something something Habilis, Neanderthal something

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's an outdated classification from the time when Neanderthals were classed as Homo sapiens neanderthalensis. The only reason we added the subspecies level was to squeeze another species in with ours. Now that we've sequenced their genome and know they were different enough to constitute a species of their own, we no longer need to subspeciate. H. sapiens (never sapien) is now considered the only extant species in the genus Homo without any subspecies.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and they all have a vote. as a side note, 90% of the drivers in Finland said they're better drivers than thr average...

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Think about how stupid the average person is, then reailize there's a 50-50 chance you're stupider than that.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And the smarter you are, the more idiots there are. The real problem however is that absolutely everyone thinks they're right.

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

In addition to @LuminoZero's point about intelligence not meaning you're not an idiot, I disagree that recognizing a lot of idiots around you is a sign of intelligence. As you say, the dumbest people think that it's everyone else who's an idiot.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's like the old saying "If you run into an asshole in the morning, you met and asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you're the asshole."

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I first heard that from Timothy Olyphant on Justified. Such a great show.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I disagree. Intelligence isn't a metric of not being a fucking idiot. Example: Doctor Ben Carson.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I'd say intelligence is a metric for not being an idiot. Ben Carson was *knowledgeable* but he was not intelligent.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But, it could be the other way around too. Semantics I suppose, purpose of words.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That'd be median stupid tho.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

Intelligence generally follows normal distribution, so the mean and median (and also the mode) are equal to each other.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Which is a type of average.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

also while medians and averages are often different, they're not different enough to change the intended impact of this statement, and in common speech 'average' will be easier for a general audience to understand.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

That last bit just highlights its truth.
