But imagine how much worse it'd be under dems!" I mean, it's the same picture. Authoritarianism is absolutely here, healthcare almost no one can utilize is the same as no healthcare, and if free speech protections are constantly being infringed upon and seeing no punishment for doing so (which there aren't), then those protections functionally do not exist, because that is about as protective as a condom with a hole in it.

afaik the bread lines only happened in the final years before the economical collapse of the USSR. The real issue with communism is the planned economy, which cannot provide for a fluctuating consumer market the way a market economy does.
