TLDR: trump is a piece of shit and ruined my family, hope he croaks sooner than later.
I’ll never forgive what Trump and the GOP did to my family. Before 10 years ago, they were actually capable of having a conversation, they were kind and caring, maybe they had some questionable opinions on certain things but I never heard any of them talk about politics my entire life, and even those questionable opinions were nowhere near as extreme as they are now and they always kept it to themselves, minded their own business, and didn’t care what others did or didn’t do.
None of that is true anymore, they’ve been warped and radicalized into their worst selves and then brainwashed to be even more extreme than that! I think the one that saddens me the most is my grandfather. He was a man that I used to look up to my entire life, he was such a kind man, would help anyone out, give homeless people food, volunteer at soup kitchens, was always donating to charity, and he was so full of wisdom. You know in shows and movies there’s always that character that gives out the most profound wisdom and advice? That was my grandfather. He immigrated here from Canada after being orphaned at a very young age during world war 2. He started his own business here, was very successful, and was able to retire early after selling his business.
Because of trump, he is nothing close to the man he used to be. My entire life I never heard a racist word out of his mouth, instead he was always teaching us to be kind to those who may look different because we’re not different at all, we’re all human beings trying to make our way in the world. I credit my own stances to the way I was raised by my family and my grandfather. Because of the way they raised me, I’m as liberal and as empathetic as they come. So it just saddens me more than words can describe to grow up with these people and learning from them and striving to one day be HALF the man my grandfather is, or was, only to see them fall victim to brainwashing and watch them in real time become the most hateful, racist, extremist, bigots, I’ve ever met.
I hate what trump did to the people I loved. He destroyed my family, I won’t talk to most of them anymore. I will celebrate the day he dies every single year til it’s my time to go.
Make thanksgiving fun again. Or as I like to pronounce it “Emtifa”

In the end what may finally bring down Trump will simply be the normal casual politically agnostic people in America simply being tired of hearing Trump, hearing about Trump, hearing from Trump's supporters, saying the same dumb shit over and over and over and over again. Hopefully Trump fatigue arrives in a big way in November 2024🇺🇸

He is literally the only politician I've EVER heard say some wildly generic but wholesome shit like "look to the future" and felt like he sincerely meant it.

I'm with ya @OP. 🫂 Debating going No Contact daily. If I catch a whiff of LGBT+ from my kids, that would make it definite immediately.

I lost my sister to the virus of fascism. It is unfathomable to me that this could have possibly happened. And yet here we are. The absolute horror of realizing that somebody in my own personal family has fallen to these bastards.

I know its not the important bit but the Steelers have only played on Thanksgiving twice in this century, it was supposed to be 3 but Trump fucked that up with his Rona response. Also, if he's a Steelers fan, we have something we can complain about.
PunchyFromCleveland
Currently dating a new guy and when I asked the dreaded question, “are you a Trumper?” He said, “I don’t follow politics, but probably Trump”. So, I am teaching and showing him why that isn’t a fit for him. He’s got LGBTQ+ friends, and other good stuff. I’m just showing him what’s actually going on and he’s opening his eyes and understanding.

Tim Walz makes a profound yet saddening point – there are young adults among us who growing up have only known half of this country as being part of some freak out MAGA cult addicted to angertainment; paranoid embittered grumps who worship and praise one of the worst human beings ever to rise to prominence in America.
justfillingthespace
It feels very good to see someone in a position of power plainly acknowledge the way the country has changed, clearly state that it doesn't have to be this way, and confidently say that we can set things right.
Tootsie1
I feel your pain. I was widowed by the soggy orange cheeto, before my divorce. My son lost his father.

Brother in law tells me he's trying to convince my Dad to vote Democrat. I told him he'd have to convince Dad to change the TV from Fox News first.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
You should show this to your grandfather.

It's not just Trump. It's been coupled with the total invasion of most of our lives in some form or another by social media, smartphones, etc. The Trump moment came at a time when many were particularly vulnerable to misinformation and other bullshit, especially in the older generation. Yes, there are definitely some predilections in these people, but it's all been magnified. It's ruined my family at large, as well.

I had lunch with one of my oldest friends today (for 35+ years). We’ve NEVER EVER, talked politics, not even when cheeto face was elected 8 years ago. But today at lunch, we started talking about how crazy things are and it occurred to me things really must be bad for my friend and I to be complaining about one of the candidates for president. On one hand I guess it’s good to be more cognizant of some of the shit going on in the world, but on the other hand, FUCK Trump for making us so cynical.

I feel like "Make Great Again" has forever been tarnished

as someone who is just...very, very tired, and does vaguely remember slightly less chaotic times in our political world, this made me emotional. Very much teary eyed. I do very much want this.

My brother in law is a trumper and he's learned to keep his stupid mouth shut when we're all together. I stare at him like a pair of gun barrels and just dare him to say one fucking thing before I hurt his stupid feelings.

Chris! Deluzio! I went to grade and high school with Rep. Deluzio (you can briefly see his banner in the background), he's a fantastic dude. Brilliant, as well. Would love to see him so big things for Harris/Walz!

Can Tim please be my dad? I'm not a huge football fan but somehow I get the feeling he'd be accepting of that and ask about what hobbies I like instead. Hell, I bet the man would sit down and learn to knit. My dad meanwhile has been stolen by the QAnon Cult and is otherwise nonexistent. He'd NEVER let me teach him how to knit.
MyCatIsMissingAnEar
Actually... now that I think about it. I probably don't like football BECAUSE my dad DOES so much... I bet I'd like football if Walz was my dad because it'd be just another reason I'd get to spend time with him. Is... is this how people with normal parents and normal families actually function? ...must be nice...
silvermayne
Trump didn’t ruin your family, he just gave them the confidence to show everyone who they really were all along.
Ninjainslippers
Yeah, my dad speaks of times when he could have decent political conversations with republicans. My dad is a neolib and I don't think he realizes that the GOP has been evil all along. Dems have been pretty bad too. It's just now the GOP is a psychotic death cult and the dems want to go back to 2008 when saying hope and change was enough to get young voters to ignore systemic problems that they have no intention of fixing.
PastureofMuppets
Biden has been passing good legislation, and Obama had good legislation. Both also had more that was blocked by Reps. Obama judges blocked by Reps. Dont pretend the Dems dont make progress when they have the ability.
capnadorable
Hard disagree, this is such a black and white, simplistic, un-nuanced take, I’m not saying all these people were perfect people before, but brainwashing and radicalization and constant propaganda is a hell of a thing. I’m not making excuses for them because they do bear some of the responsibility, but to say every single one of these people have always been the exact same evil pieces of shit they’ve been radicalized to be is very short sighted
PastureofMuppets
No this just isnt true. I have seen older family members who watch Fox News change. Same people who were into diverse cultures, pro-women's lib, PBS, pro-education, pro traveling the world, pro curiosity, pro being kind to others, pro the arts when i was growing up, have now had those things framed for them as a danger to their wellbeing from "the news", which they grew up trusting, plus Facebook.
That said i also have older family members who are very progressive. They dont watch Fox News.

I will seriously follow those two to hell and back. I have never felt more pride in two running people than I do right now. Save democracy vote blue.

Then buckle up because we are already past event horizon there.

It’s the other two who’ll lead you to hell. Find your own way back.

I don’t even think Obama had me feeling like this. That being said, we can’t think it’s in the bag, we have to vote like hell, break records in every single state for voter turnout. When we get complacent, we lose.
Fynndango
Everyone thought Trump running the first time was a joke and Hilary would win by a mile. So no one turned out. Everyone has better fucking vote.

Ehh. They are politicians, so I'll gladly vote for them and watch them the way I would watch any authority figure. It's healthy to keep vigilant.

Yes. God yes. I'm TIRED of living in interesting times! I want to go back to the days when a weird enough "yEaH!!!11" was enough to end your political career. None of this, "34 felonies and he's STILL on the ballot!" bullshit.
ladybuglauren
I agree but don't. When it was boring that is kind of what opened the door to what we have now.
diggetydug
100% agree. We got complacent. The GOP moved pawns all over the country in lower level courts. Now we're seeing how the local level works it's way to the top. And it's terrifying.
nation543
SERIOUSLY! I remember politics in the late 80's and through the 90's, and it was all dumb boring crap until the late 90's. I don't want interesting scandal crap in politics, I just want people to bow out when they lose because their policies are shit, and then life gets better for everybody because the person who has a real and beneficial platform wins.
euphoricopportunity
I dunno, the mid 90s were rather horrifying. Remember the "contract with America" and all of Gingrich's bullshit? I see your point, and it has gotten worse, but the bullshit and acrimony has been present.

Tim Walz is a good man.
