It’s interesting as getting burned by a soldering iron is an awful feeling — but as long as the nerves are burnt, the intense pain only lasts about 12 hours before going away completely.
I singed my fingers on an 800 deg F soldering iron just a few weeks ago. I was getting frustrated w/ trying to solder the tiny copper pads on SK8612 LEDs and dropped my fingers close to the tip to get better control. Ssssssszzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

I caught my first apprentice master between two of his fingers with a soldering iron, right a web close to the knuckles. It was quite a large burn. Not the best impression to make in my first week out on the shop floor. Felt so bad about it, and did for years every time I saw him after moving to other apprentice masters. Burnt myself enough time over the following years that I think I made up for it.

More surface area = better heat dissipation.
Also, you don't really need extreme precision like you're holding a pencil. Most things you're going to solder are big enough you have 1-2mm spatial error, and you get used to holding it properly quickly enough.
If you know how to use chopsticks, a soldering iron is easy.

Heat break for the electronics. The tip gets so hot that distance is needed to separate the electronics and handle from the tip.

My 'smell of burning human' experience is far less horrible than any of the replies here. Part of my long ordeal with orthodontics [mom, dad, I'm so sorry I cost so much] involved having to expose and drag down a tooth that refused to erupt. They did it by burning my gums away from the tooth.
I still smell it sometimes. Like, phantom smell out of nowhere.
Definitely not chicken.

I find it very difficult to be anywhere near where pork sausages are being cooked. That sickly sweet smell now makes me feel quite ill and I want to tear the insides of my nose out

Usually it’s just your skin that gets seared, and there’s not any odor.
Picking off the skin burnt to the iron is an interesting task especially where it carbonizes and oxidizes your fingerprints into the metal of the iron.
