A meme did this with my home town (st. Helens Oregon, Halloween town). We now throw a Halloween town event because it said we recreated the movie every year. No we didn't. We just decorated. 2000+ people showed up from around the world for something that wasn't a thing. Now they actually do it and capitalize on the tourism. Yeah, the problem is so many people accept the place they read/hear/see something as a reliable source in itself - particularly with things like social media that allow anyone to post. Sadly, there are very few places where things are reported that are reputable these days, and so many things are just showing content posted/created by others, it gets really murky if you aren't looking on the right/official places.

I recently saw someone (from a government office, who posts approved stories there) write an article about how great the office is doing and provide quotes _from herself_ about it.
TikTok is literally a propaganda machine for Trump and Xi Jinping (see: Trump's meeting with Bytedance and subsequent reinstatement of TikTok on USA stores). Anyone who tries to defend TikTok as a legitimate platform for news and information is a fucktard who is easily susceptible to misinformation.
Certain people on TikTok are valid sources. Under the desk news is one of the best news sources in the US, and she's on TicTok. That's true for literally everything.
No platform is trustworthy in itself. Everything requires doing enough research to decide who to trust.

It's the capacity for aggregate harm that makes TikTok especially insidious. It can spread misinformation much faster and wider than, say, Facebook due to the manner in which you interact with it. They both suck though.
It also targets younger users, but the attitudes are much farther left than Facebook.
Not as much as as imgur, but there are still a lot of far left TicTokers that stuck out the takeover and are fighting for the platform just like we are against business daddy here. It gave several amazing people a start and it sucks that it was taken over.
