As a person struggling with depression, f*ck this guy.
He killed 77 people. Mostly kids. Just shot most of them in cold blood because he's a right wing asshole. If he lives 77 years in jail with his "deep depression" it's not enough.
Norwegian prison conditions violate his human rights huh? Maybe they should move him to a nice Venezuelan prison, or an Indonesian one, or maybe a Russian campsite up in the Tundra.

Honestly, once there is irrefutable proof that you've committed mass murder, I think your rights should be forfeited. Because after a certain point, I don't think there is any benefit to rehabilitating a person. Some people are simply a lost cause. This cunt is exhibit fucking A. I believe it's highly unlikely he will ever see the outside of a prison, again. 21 years is the maximum a single sentence can be in Norway, but I can be extended each and every time it gets close to those 21 years. Life without the possibility of parole doesn't exist over here.

There is not. Not directly. His sentence is called "detention", and after the initial 21 years, they can prolong it by 5 years at a time. This is used if he is still believed to be a treat to society.

I can't speak for the guy or his mental state, but it's probably more than 'depression'. He's being kept in solitary confinement. Yeah, his prison cell looks like a studio apartment, but it's still a prison cell. He has no control over his own life. He can't speak to anyone or even see another person. Regardless of what you feel he deserves, those conditions are very taxing on a social animal. The sentence is not nearly as 'cushy' as people make it out to be.

Yes, it does take a toll on a social animal. It also takes a toll on the human as a social animal if you murder someone they are close to - like their children. And it takes a toll on humans if you shoot people around them. And as long as it seems that he might repeat his crime/influence others to spread this kind of violence I think that this might be a fair trade off to society. I also think it’s noteworthy that he has some human contact

I'll be downvoted for this but the difference is that in other countries, they treat prison as rehabilitation, not punishment, and they are trying to rehabilitate Brevik, however unlikely that may sound to you. Here in America we have abandoned that idea and its just punishment.

I can pretty much give you a blanket guarantee, that they're NOT making even one attempt of rehabilitating Anders Breivik. He's going to stay in prison till the day he dies. If he is EVER going to be released, he won't survive one day on the outside either. Having killed 77 people, of which atleast 65 of them were teenagers, he can't walk anywhere in Norway without meeting someone he has hurt by his actions.

The thing about the sentence that he was handed is, that it's called "preventive detention". It has a maximum determined sencence of 21 years, but can and will in his case be extended by 5 years at a time, indefinately. - His sentence is therefore a life sentence, and making it any shorter would anger the norwegian population. While a prison sentence is initially for rehabilitation in the european justice systems, it's also very much justice for the victims.

Pretty much up until the 13th Amendment, which states incarceration demotes you to slave. Then it became highly profitable to not rehabilitate.

when prisons were first started, it was done so as to encourage penitence - hence, penitentiary. they also wound up getting rid of the "all solitary, all the time" model and into a reformatory goal rather than a penitent one.

However the rest of the environment more or less nullify that possible except for the most determined.
