For me the omission of "The Harrowing of the Shire" and the true death of Saruman was the greatest loss from the books.

I can see why the RotK movie originally had Sauron take a "physical form" (movie quote, not book quote) that was then destroyed by Aragorn wielding Andúril, however. In modern movie logic, that would be a trilogy-long story arc conclusion. I'm glad they defied giving Aragon a full hero's journey and stuck closer to the books final act, because that was the whole point of making the hobbits the heroes in the first place. If they had included the Scourging, though, my bladder would have burst.

While I can understand the sentiment, I think the Scouring of the Shire really works better in book form. The movie was already long as hell and had like five different endings. Trying to cram that in would have felt anti-climactic.

I gave up reading after about 4 pages of hobbits mussing of naps and warm stunned rocks to take one on amidst a field described in agonizing detail. Them we got to hear about the sun and grass again oh oh and the breeze and rock again *book sails across the room*

Try the audiobooks narrated by Andy Serkis, they're fantastic. Although Fellowship is still pretty slow.

It wasn't a technicality, it was a prophecy. He just read it wrong. It wasn't that somehow being a woman gave her any extra ability to kill him and that it would have been impossible for a man to do the exact same thing. It's that the future was known and that it didn't happen to be a man who dealt the final blow.
I agree it's better to have the Barrow-blade's history to explain that he was weakened. But either way he wasn't killed on a technicality, he was killed by the foreseen person.
