Yeah, the Northern Route is suicide. Which leaves going around Africa, adding 4000nm to the journey and two more weeks of fuel and food to the cost, not to mention piracy risk. Or there is the Panama Canal or the Cape Horn route but one will be full of traffic in an already traffic jam route and the other takes even longer.

WTF are you talking about? The Red Sea has sea routes to the north, Suez, and South Bab Al-Mandab, Europe is to the NORTH of Saudi, so the flow of oil to Europe would go through Suez. Asia is to the EAST of Saudi, therefore would need oil to travel through Bab Al-Mandab... Maybe check a world map before trying to correct someone when you clearly haven't got a clue what's happening?

Um... look at the map. Canal no work if strait blocked. That's the canal in the top left, linking the Mediterranean to the north end of the Red Sea. But the Strait is at the south end of the Red Sea.

Well you see, those oil companies need more profits, and these things scare their profits, so they have to charge more, cuz "free market" where a handful of big companies do most of the extraction, transportation and the refining. It might seem that this is all made up, but that's only because in Canada we're still paying 60% more at the rack than we should be at this oil price. (Prior to around March, we should have been under a buck, the rest is just increased profits)

I think the social sctructures of Bronze Age societies were the primary weakness that lead to the collapse of all Near East empires (except Egypt) when stress created unrests.

More like a 1,000 years. I do think we’re considerably more resilient largely for technological reasons, but even so it’s still true that a single chokepoint can wreak havoc on the world system (there wasn’t a “world” system in ancient times) for a significant period of time. The good news is that we have alternatives to petro-dependency; the bad news is that we are slow on the curve (previously bc technology, now bc Ludditism).

Unless we replace oil with a cheaper more effective alternative, these are not the same. Bronze was difficult to produce and the materials came from different regions, forcing peace, for trade to happen. Plentiful cheap iron changed all of that.
