People have a lot of assumptions about me because I am a trucker and they feel comfortable talking about Trump this and Trump that around me because most white truckers are supporters and racist against Hindu drivers.
Usually I just excuse myself from their presence and walk away because Im tired of hearing about ths orange stain, or their personal distain.
philmoregraves
Im almost 40 and I look like a good ol Boi mechanic. Ppl old white dudes LOVE to share their biggoted ass jokes and views. They seem off put when im not a fan
taez555
As a 40yo cis male, I have the same opinion.

I like when they make transphobic comments to me cause I pass as cis. Like. Hey. Naw.

The secret is the snowflakes think every other demographic is out to get them, and take away their privilege. Because you are one of the 'in-crowd', that you feel that same threat.
JustUsLeagueUnlimited
There's been this trend to have rainbow shit to show you're the lighthouse in the storm for LGBT. But that's not the (only) reason.
I rainbow my shit up because I don't want to talk to weird assholes.
Had a co-worker tell me another co-worker "he's always talking MAGA" ... which I thought was weird. He only talks about work with me. "Yeah, you're the gay liberal to him"... listen bro, I'm straight but I'd chug every dick in the world not to talk to him... have a rainbow sticker.
LordBrandonTheBold
That's what it was like working in Home repair and construction. So many homeowners assumed your politics because you work with your hands.
MikeRInternetTraveler
I had a plumber show up to give a quote, with Trump/MAGA shit all over his truck. Before he even got out of the truck, I told him I wouldn’t be doing business with him, no matter how good or cheap he was. He called me (a straight guy, with my wife looking on from the porch) “a f****t” and left. Fuck off with that shit.
FinancialRavioli
The opposite is true, too. If we'd had the money and time to do so, we would have fired a window contractor mid-way through a full replacement because he opened his stupid mouth.
Comet260
If you did, I bet that window-licker would have thrown a shit-fit about you infringing on his "free speech".
mothmam
I’ve had several guy friends tell me that they liked working construction, but they hated the other guys because so many of them were gross racist or sexist.
LordBrandonTheBold
It depends on the location and a bit on the trade. Most guys are generally ok in my experience. I have more trouble with homeowners than the other guys on site.
ThrowAwayAcct0000
My brother-in-law lives in Florida and has to deal with this every day. He hates all of his coworkers because of this stuff.

One of the joys of being outwardly queer-coded nowadays is, no bigot thinks I'm a safe person to talk to. :)
fractalsphere
You've got some great opportunities to really shame them for feeling certain ways.
PennsylvaniaPalindrome
Shaming them feels good for a moment, but wouldn't they just double down later? You can try the Socratic method (ask Qs using their own language so they see the error in logic) but that usually pisses them off. Might make em think tho.

Same here, too. Living in the South with short hair a beard, “presenting” as straight, I get ALL the bs MAGA comments like I’m one of them.

60yo male presenting person, tend to dress kinda conservatively/to blend in, I've had the same experience. I actually went and got both ears pierced in part so that I'd look a little bit less like some kind of MAGAt who left his red hat at home. :/
PearjuiceATX
I’m a heavy, bearded, 6’4 middle aged guy in West Virginia… I get it.
CALAMOSCOPYJANE
Same here! I’m a middle-aged white lady, and I’ve chewed out many a racist and homophobic POS for assuming that I’d share their shitty views. Got a guy laughed off of the streetcar by repeating the bs he was saying to me about some young people who were on the tram with us.
Neednoggle
I imagine I'd have the same problem, but for the fact that pretty much all the people I interact with on any given day tend to be pretty progressive. Despite looking like a cop, I work with good people, hang out with good people, and live in a lefty neighbourhood of a lefty city. I actually count myself pretty lucky.
Beesareonthewhatnow
Friends definitely arent the issue. Co-workers and strangers mostly
ThrowAwayAcct0000
OMG yes! I live in Montreal, Canada. People will start talking to me, thinking because I'm white that I share their racists views, like how there are too many immigrants (I'M A FUCKING IMMIGRANT), and it drives me insane! I have zero problem with immigrants of every color, country, or religion. This person tells me, "there are too many immigrants in nursing now," & I want to say, WHAT THE HELL, don't we want more nurses and doctors? Your skin color is unimportant to me, please fix my broken leg!
DukeDarkwood
The fact that there are three entire provinces between Alberta and Quebec makes me a bit worried about Canada. Has it spread that far?
ThrowAwayAcct0000
Racism is an everywhere thing.
DukeDarkwood
Yes, but I expect it to be a smaller thing in the more metropolitan areas, where people of all types mingle on a daily basis.
The racists quickly learn either that everyone is just living day to day, like they are... or that expressing their views is hazardous to their health.
Jyakalope
Same, I'm a white dude with a beard, it's crazy how many people just start sharing their shitty ideology with me out of nowhere.

Tall, white, cis, bald with beard. I want to buy a shirt that just says "no im not a asshole" l. My wife and a few friends are going to the pride parade and invited me to support our friends in the community but I feel like I'll stick out like a sore thumb.

Generally older white guys with goatees.... Republicans, haven't met one in last 10 years who wasn't.
PithyCommentBelow
This makes me so sad. I’ve heard it a bunch recently. I can’t grow a beard - just doesn’t grow in on the sides. But I’ve had a goatee forever. And now those fucking cunts have ruined it. Wonder if this is how fans of teams with red hats feel? 😢
TheBlackSonOfTheHonestMan
Probably... my wife threw away my red hat, I was like... it wasn't MAGA... she's said... don't matter
FinancialRavioli
This is why I don't engage in conversation with anyone. I don't want to hear their shitty points of view and possibly give them a feeling of validation.

As a +40 year old big white dude white a long beard and who is covered in tattoos; man I feel you. It's got me seriously considering me bringing back the hot pink mohawk on my college punk days to finally get them to get the message fuck off. mouthfullofpebbles
NICE! I am sure you won't change their opinion, but perhaps they get a little more careful with gargling those nasty opinions openly and being a part of normalizing bigotry and hate. BUT, most importantly: you never know who else might be overhearing you and suddenly feeling a little more hopeful, or even safer.
Fuckimgurcunts
Exactly. Great use of the word gargling btw
LittleRobot71
Same, white guy with a greying beard.
Last local election guy came by to try and get me to vote for him and started about talking about the "gay" problem in our town.
Told him to go fuck himself and then made fun of him to my husband...
Guess he missed the pride flag in the back yard (is visible from the street, but not from the front porch) lol
Heisanevilgenius
I'm imagining it in reverse where you made fun of him to your husband THEN told him to fuck himself. The guy's going on about the "gay" problem in your town and you yell to the other room, "Hey honey, get a load of this fucking guy." Your husband comes over, guy is stunned to silence. "This guy was talking about the 'gay' problem in our town." Husband: "Oh my." You: "Go fuck yourself" and close the door. It's all so cinematic.

As a large, balding, bearded white dude in his mid 30s that drives a 99 dodge truck, I got this alot. But I found the cheat code. I started painting my nails black. Now the only people talking politics with me are the ones that I at least have the capacity to have friendly debate with, and queer folk around me know I'm safe. Haven't been harassed either, but that may just be because I'm big enough most dudes decide against starting trouble.
Heisanevilgenius
Yeah, a few years ago I was getting my hair cut and this other white dude comes in and starts talking about the economy and such. At first he says a bunch of stuff I mostly agree with but then he says he doesn't think our hair stylist should charge more money even though inflation hit us all hard. Then he started blaming our economic issues on immigrants and I said "Oh, please" (Our hairdresser was a Chinese woman I was a loyal customer of). He seemed to still act like we were buds afterwards.

40yr old white cis former Marine working in the trades. Jackasses are always thinking I'm on board with their homophobic, misogynistic, racist, bullshit. I served during the don't say gay period. We had a few friends come out to us and nobody gave a shit. They joined in war time, did their jobs, and served their country with honor while you played CoD at home on your couch. Now you wanna guess who I think of as a patriot and who should be rounded up for reeducation on American values?
Sfingks
Agreed. I’m white, 41M, I have a big beard with a big moustache, and a shaved head. Lots of shitty people assume that I’m into their awful ideology. But on an upside it’s easy to see who your enemies are, and it’s always an opportunity to tell someone they’re a piece of shit
Beesareonthewhatnow

noWhiteHorseHereJustBatturuPrinsu
That's weird... Trump doesn't have a beard, just like most republican leaders and spokespeople. And those who do have a beard (Vance, Tate) are too scared to actually grow their beard, it gets trimmed and forced to be immaculate. Meanwhile, us treehugging left-wing supporters of the non-status-quo-majority have big bushy beards. Why all of a sudden the hate against beards?
InfocalypseRising

Kaleopolitus
You could just wear an LGBTQ+ wrist band or pin. Similar options abound, I'm sure. Bonus points for showing people you're an ally.
FractalShoggoth
For real. For a bunch of people constantly talking about LGBTQ+ being "in your face", they sure like to spout their garbage unprompted. Very rarely have I encountered a rando who will offer an equivalent lefty opinion out of nowhere. (Although it's possible said randos make similar assumptions about me.)
xeoxion
I see what a person is in seconds of talking to them, I wann know if ima waste my time or not. So I ussualy go off on how shit prices are and all the fault of the shit stain in dumbfuckistan. Weeds out the crap people right away.
mouthfullofpebbles
I don't know if there is any equivalent lefty opinions? Like "I'd like people to be safe and have a reasonable amount of food" is just reasonable basic humanity and therefore can't be put in a boxing ring against "trans people mind poisons kids to be autistic and also it should be illegal to be foreign! Only people that looks like me is human! The planet dying is actually really good for the billionaires!"
FractalShoggoth
The equivalent might be something like, "God, these grocery prices, right? Thanks to all the Trumptards who voted in the pedo."
Basically, things that are normally reserved for online venting or discussions with well-known acquaintances with whom you've already established a political dialogue and not the random stranger you started chatting with in line at the store. Or even co-workers you don't know that well.
"Dinner table" etiquette.
mouthfullofpebbles
Oh, yeah, now I'm with you. And I agree. I mean, it happens, but not nearly as frequently as the ghastly opinions. It's probably the overlap in the Venn diagram. If you are less intelligent or haven't received adequate education, or haven't learned to be emphatic about the comfort of other people, you will be less well mannered and more inclined to blurt out anything to anyone. And we vote for people who we feel mirrors us best.
MerriMod
They're lonely and shallow, with nothing better in their lives than to bitch about made-up grievances to distract from their utter void of personality. They're constantly looking for someone to whinge at for stimulus, or who will validate them so they feel worthwhile. It's why they get so combative and stubborn; digging in and fighting is emotionally satisfying for them; they want to keep someone paying attention to them as long as possible even as they exhaust, frustrate, and drive people away.
HashMaster9k
How do I know that MAGA Shitheads can't read? The amount of times this happens when wearing a Star Trek T-shirt. And even if they can read, they obviously have no sense of logic or connecting the dots— what part of my shirt stating Starfleet Academy Graduate makes you think I'd be on board with your hate and LGBTQIA+ Phobia? If you can't read the shirt, at least read the room and kniw your audience. 🙄
Vter1
You're very generous giving them credit for being able to recognize subtlety, or even the general premise of Star Trek. If anything has been consistent over the years, it's the ability for MAGA folks to miss the point of just about anything they watch or listen to.
Snarklepuff
This would require MAGA folks to comprehend metaphor, analogy and allegory.
In my experience most conservatives are locked into concrete thinking; they are quite literal-minded, and I would assume most of Star Trek's storytelling and messaging would be lost on them.
TheSlouchOfBethlehem
I used to just not say anything, but that doesn't work. You have to spray some shit-mist onto the conversation or else they'll keep doing it.
Beesareonthewhatnow
I try, but there's some people that literally aren't worth the effort. But after theres definitely some shame involved.

Try being a 60 year old white male with a big white beard and a ball cap standing in line at Walgreens in TN waiting to get your Rx's filled. The huge line is all old people because that's generally the majority of people stupid enough to stand in line to get Rx's filled in 2026. I swear the worst of them are the older women wearing crosses. The racist, bigoted, terrible shit they just start spewing like I'm their buddy at a KKK rally is impossible to adequately describe. I feel ya man.

FYI, it's just "cis". It's not an acronym, so doesn't need to be capitalized. It's just the Latin inverse of "trans" and means "on the same side".
Not intended as criticism, just spreading knowledge.
Xenarion
I'll also add technically that it's a prefix and should be followed by something to carry actual meaning. I know I'm probably alone in that but it annoys me when people abbreviate a word to its prefix. And I'm still salty the term "trans-man" got completely overshadowed by bad grammar and people mixing it up with "trans. man".
delecti
The problem with "transman" is it implies that they're a different noun than cisgender men. It muddies the water a bit to say "transmen are men" vs "trans men are men".
And while I can see the complaint about "trans" just being the prefix, in practice it's always clear that it's a shortening of "transgender". So it's still serving its purpose of conveying information.
Xenarion
Not sure what you mean by "it implies that they're a different noun", because it literally is a different noun.
Hackwitch
It's because trans is an adjective, not a prefix. The same way you wouldn't say "tallwoman" (unless, of course, you live in the world of dungeon meshi) you don't say transwoman because that's creating a new noun instead of modifying it. Trans women/men are women/men who happen to be trans, not a secret third thing.

Targe0
Honestly doing that is helpful.
Because you are putting cracks into their world view that people like that all think like them.
You are forcing them to see the world isn't as simple as they think it is.
It might not be much, but you are forcing them to confront the real world for once.
NoneOfYoBiseniss
It's tough, I've been and Independent just voting for the lessor of two evils since the 80's. Whenever I call out people hate or bullshit they always accuse me of being on the other side from them when I feel I'm squarely in the middle and believe in freedom and liberty for all.
Targe0
Very few political systems have a functional centre anymore. People have become extremely tribal about it all now.
So you are either part of their team or you are working for the enemy side, there's no nuance left.
NoneOfYoBiseniss
On the flip side I get hate from ulta libs as well that don't even bother to check my viewpoints. People on both sides have been pit against each other and the vast majority are too stupid to realize and admit they have been gaslit. Divide and conquer has worked in out Republic. Yes, Americans live in a republic people.

Almost like extremist views are bad regardless of which side of politics they stand for.
Moderate views are the only way things can actually get done.
As much as people hate it, but a good democracy needs to operate in the centre of politics.
But in places like the US, the whole system is so far right that it's all right wing politically. Sure the Democrats might be a bit progressive for social policies, but they are still economic Conservatives by majority. Bernie and Mamdani excluded.

Life is short and the "rules" are made up, so go for it.
Find someone who knows what they're doing if you want your hair dyed. You can do real damage if you do it wrong.
Maybe start with regular polish rather than gel nails. Gel lasts a lot longer, but it costs a lot more and you need certification to get the good products.
Trim your nails, wash your hands, apply base coat, then two coats of whatever colour you like, and then top coat. Wait a minute or two between coats.
Have fun.

I'm currently working with my therapist over my, fear isn't the right word, anxiety I guess, of accessories.
So I may have to start a little smaller, I've been looking on Etsy for a very simple string bracelet.

Assuming the anxiety comes from other people seeing them, just paint your nails on a Friday afternoon, or whenever you have a day or two off.
Just a single coat of black. Literally cost like $2, takes 5mins. Don't worry about doing it well, by the time you get to the 10th finger it'll be acceptable at minimum. If you hate it, acetone is also cheap as hell and works in seconds.
Spend a lil time by yourself with them painted so your less nervous about it.

First time for me, I just painted my ring finger to match the color my wife had. Its possible someone noticed, but no one ever mentioned it, and I just let it chip away over weeks. First time I painted all 10, my coworker just said "Your daughter got a hold of you?" Then we talked about family and stuff.
People will likely be more accepting than you believe, and the ones that aren't are the ones you don't need in your life anyway.

another accessory that might not trigger anxiety is a pocket watch, with the little chain.
