during 9'th and 10'th grade I sat at the same desk all through the school year and since I was extremely bored by the lessons I spend my time slowly drilling 1 mm holes through the tabletop using a small drillbit I could hide in my hand- at the end of 10'th grade I had made an almost correct map of Denmark in a 10X10 cm square. At the 10 year class reunion my class teacher said that she had bought the table because she wanted it to remember the most quiet troublemaker she had ever taught
the sander is called a stroke sander and they are great for sanding tabletops, the one in our shop is much bigger and can be expanded for tables larger than 8ft. the base they have here is custom built to hold that desk.
I just think of how much the value of the bench was just removed, not just history, but financial. People pay more for that authenticity, and nostalgia.
But if they are being reused in a school, I get it
I went to high school in a very small, isolated town. There were literal familly trees carved into some of the desks. Most hilarious thing I saw my freshman year: we had a new teacher from out of town who caught a classmate drawing her and hubbie's initials and tried to shame her by asking what her parents would think. Cue pointing to said parent's initials and *then* her grandparents (one pair, don't remember which side).
To clarify: shame, not humiliate. Just a "you are doing something you know you aren't supposed to and should feel bad about it so you avoid doing it in the future."
Hootykai
Wait, I wrote the answers to my test on that desk.
bingotown
And then drum sanders were invented.
circlebreaker
"Good job sanding and re-staining the desk, Johnson."

Noooo . The sacred texts!
fractalsphere
Best I got for that comment. ;)
derdax
It's exactly what I had in mind. ;) I was just to lazy to search for this picture.
unremarkableasterisk
Fun fact: he did all of that graffiti.
stercusmoriturussum
We would have taken that as a challenge - if the internet had existed back then.
hotaru251
why schools need to fund shop classes as this could save them a lot of $ in long term
AmyBethMegJo
I assumed this was the school's shop room.
MuffinStuffinPuffin
How will I know what bands are cool if they sand them all off the top of the desk?
Cataleast
You ruined the patina! ;)
Ac1dBurn72
I'd write tiny notes in pencil before a test. And wipe it off with my hand once done.
Pfffftit
Now do the gum on the bottom
eadanke
In 4th or 5th grade, I drilled hole in the bottom of a desk and filled the hole with gum and carefully made it look like a piece stuck on.

Draw a dick on a desk years ago, it's graffiti. Draw it on a cave wall thousands of years ago it's an archaeological find.
SixSixxtySix
RIP that guy’s lungs.
LutraLazuli
Never saw this happen when I was in wood shop, although we all had these hard plastic desks that took graffiti as well as wood
draconicus
Kinda liked the worn look, but that's nice and clean
figuringeights
I'm so sanding can go faster? What am I doing with this belt sander bullshit?
aristera
It's just a bigger belt sander. All tools can be made to go faster if you just get a bigger one.
tekcor
Awesome! Now do it 6,000 more times.
squillis
"It's finished - oh wait, not anymore"
marthafarquar
The sacred texts !!!
GenesisAmadeus
this disgusting
ropetopus
The “graffiti” isn’t why this is done. It’s that the surface has become too worn and pitted to be used as a writing surface.
Batman1702
Yeah define graffiti, more kike decades of use.

sevenfingerman
All that history lost, like tears in the rain.
jqubed
See kids, if you want to really leave a mark, you need to carve it in with a knife deeper than they can sand
wadatahmydamie
If you’re in shop class, use a router
jqubed
And if not they not make battery-powered Dremel rotary tools
LespritDeLescalier22
You can do it. All you gotta do is follow your dreams and belief in yourself.

You can fly! You can really fly! Go to the roof and fly children! Go now!

TIL there are custom sanders for reclaiming desks.
lpooptoomuch

Thank you for the name and the info on them!

Smh, destruction of our ancestors' palimpsests, erasing culture

Wow, I appreciate this comment. It really is a palimpsest.

Might I spy another Dropout?
EverNotRelevant
Nope, don't know what you mean.
IMakeLotsOfReferencesAndRemakes
Damn you made the reference and everything.
adventureswithadhd
This seems like a Brennan Lee mulligan type of word. Or are you talking about a different dropout?
IMakeLotsOfReferencesAndRemakes
It very much is and I very much wasn't. GET IN THE COMMENTS!

These giant belt sanders are awesome. They’re so fast, it’s amazing, but also huge and basically impossible outside of a production shop!

Generations worth of history and knowledge removed in seconds. That's a shame.

On the bottom of the bad kids area desk in my high school, there was a sharpie drawing of a peach wearing a thong. Art.
