First, you learn there are 2 categories of sex. Then, if you pay attention in upper middle school, you learn there are 2 more. If you pursue biology further in your studies, you learn there are like 32 different categories based on like 10 different factors. Chances are you went to school with several people who are not in the 2 simplest categories without even knowing it, which is also the reason a lot of biology teaching experiments are not done on samples from the students themselves.
