Cockpit Mode. Preflight complete, ready to fly!
Furniture mode. I'm not going to lie.. while my wife wanted something that can stow away and look presentable, it is rarely ever in this state. Too much flying to do!
Before you see the rest, you need to see how it all began 4 years ago.
Version 1
A large and heavy three monitor setup. While it was great at the time, it nearly took up a whole bedroom and was more of a permanent fixture. I planned on creating a large F-18 cockpit at the time but since I was in the military, it didn't make sense to do so as I would eventually be moving.
Version 2
Literally built into the lower half of a closet! Kept the front panel from V1 and reduced it to 1 monitor. I liked this one due to the fact that I could close the closet doors and fully immerse myself in what felt like a cockpit type of environment.
Regrettably, I didn't take very many pictures of the building process. Once I knew what my plan of action was I just went for it. Learning along the way.

Seat progress
I was actually surprised how perfectly everything stowed away. I don't know how I pulled of the engineering behind that but hey, it works!
Stowed view
Opening the lid. Note the joystick catching the monitor. Not a huge issue since it simply slides right by but fixed later with an adjustable joystick base.
Preflight
Full 2D cockpit setup. I have a TrackIR that magnetically mounts to the top monitor. I still regularly use the cockpit monitor as a copy of my primary monitor so I can briefly look through my Oculus nose gap to see important information in background apps.
I painstakingly made custom, editable Adobe Acrobat files for each aircraft/spacecraft to line up within the MFD screens. Unfortunately, since I mainly fly in VR now, I rarely use this anymore. The monitor cost $10 at Goodwill. I added a simple wooden frame to help fill out the front panel of the cockpit to make it feel more like a front panel.
I crafted my own 7" extension using some PVC, some gorilla glue, and the Gardena Medal Hose Connector found here. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002VED3KW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Eventually I would like to purchase a solid metal extension, but this one is very sturdy and only costs about $20.
The seat padding is custom made with memory foam and a wooden backing covered in black canvas cloth. The seat cushion simply sets in place while the two back support pads are attached with velcro. They are holding up just fine for now but in the near future, I plan on getting custom seat cushions made.
Since I share this experience with as many friends as possible, I had to add in some common safety features. For my peace of mind.
Yellow markings = Don't grab it!

-Throttle panel
Grey = reinforced support

My battle grounds / VR room. VR play space is roughly 9x9. In cockpit mode, I simply turn the Oculus sensors mounted in the corners of the room to face the cockpit. Easy transition.
The ONLY proper attire to wear for the experience. Custom name patch as well. Usually only worn for the long sorties and cold Seattle nights.

Are there very many flight sims that support VR? This is what I've been waiting for.
MutantJohn
What do you people do for a living?
baldewok
This is absolutely superb and I love every little detail in it.
Juggernut
This is fantastic. I play Elite: Dangerous in VR and am hoping to play Star Citizen as well once that is supported. I've considered (1/2)
Juggernut
making a cockpit before, but was turned off because of the space/wife/decor issue. I may have to re-think this.
RippleNipple
Why didnt you just buy plane lessons instead?
NadesNBlades
Because 20,000 > 500.
NotaClipaMagazine
I've been working on a A-10 gear handle. /a/KiRO1 Any interest, OP?
tucotheugly
God damn I love the A10.
Shaows
What are you, a Marine?

Now i can drop bombs on ISIS from the comfort of my own home!
Baccano2015
I admire the dedication but I mean, wow. This is above and beyond the call of duty (pun may or may not be intended)
maverickturner
It pays off when I see gusts grinning like a kid when they get to try it.
theashman69
Before @OP mentioned the VR I was like ..."Why not use Rift or Vive?" but @OP is smarter than me.
2complicated2care
Seattle!!!! Welcome to the great North West! Awesome setup man! I've been here 17 years it's a great place to call home.
2complicated2care
I know some great hiking trails, kayaking/rafting spots, great restaurants, nifty little bars, just ask, be more than happy to share ;)
BeTheHammer
Does it have an ejector seat?
ChadBroFamilyGuyFan86
+1 for MFD terminology.

So you could just stow it and take that anywhere, even, if you feel like, venture into a Zone of Danger?
CallMeMarty
I love how you basically have to do preflight checks
MFdobbs
I live in Seattle. Can I come play on it? Pretty please...
realwomenfightnaked
Same, we should have a party where we all throttle @OP joystick.
RonaldFckingSwanson
Your wife can't give you one room or garage in the house where u can put this?
KarenFromBehind
Maybe they actually like each other and want to be in the same room while he geeks out
mynewcharacter
I wish I had enough commitment to put on my Vault suit every time I play Fallout 4.
GamesDeen
This guys is seriously into fight simulator. I wish my wife was seriously into me. Just kidding...I wish I was dead.
Mack1986
... Oh really. Your nickname is maverick?
Stranger69Danger
I don't see lumbar support mister.
JustCallMeBean
Lumbar has plenty of air support.
maverickturner
yeah, after about 3 hours it can be a real pain in the ass
EmotionallyTransparent
Steps outside *stretches* "What a beautiful da- WTF!?" *OP's house flies over the neighborhood.*
NukeElectrician
What simulator do you use for the Oculus?
maverickturner
DCS, il2, FSX and Elite: Dangerous
NukeElectrician
How do you get FSX to work with it? I’ve tried and can’t get it to work
schmobius
I'm quite happy with my CouchPit setup for Elite, but this is just damned impressive!
NadesNBlades
CouchPit?
Pugbear
You are amazing. just know that.
maverickturner
why thank you!
Rapps
I hope to grow up and be like you... one day...
thuderstick
Someone is stuck on the ground crew.
CommanderRy
I'm glad someone said it
IKnowItWasNotDeleted
OPHASNECKBEARD
This is really cool, but I don't think I'll ever be able to get into VR due to the crippling fear that someone will sneak up and stab me.
Arrrrgggggghhhh
Damn it! How does he know my plan...
LuciusNeedful
The fear is justified. I rarely use VR, but have been stabbed as many times with the googles on, as when without.
c4539
Googles? Have you been using Earth? Is that why you're being stabbed many times?
maverickturner
nah.. just rig trip-wire traps or get a dog! It's worth it!
Assfullofbread
Honest question, you seem to enjoy flying a lot, why don't you fly irl?
Juggernut
Although, be aware that dogs are notorious for getting tangled in VR cords and seriously messing up your equipment. This is why I made (1/2)
Juggernut
my own 'breakout box' for my Rift. Custom 3d printed box with USB 3.0 and HDMI extensions, so the cord pulls from there rather than my PC.
