I fell in to the gifted program as a kid but spent the rest of my scholastic life doing the bare minimum to pass. I'm now 37 and have spent the last decade slowly erasing and completing all the stupid little hobbies I got in to during my life. But now I'm too self-hating to allow myself to enjoy delving into something new. My bookcases and shelves are not just clean, but nearly empty of possessions past the bare minimum.
some of us also got diagnosed as autistic or ADHD after we burned out as adults and then we learned why everything was always so hard for us outside the structure and support of an academic setting and we start to learn to love ourselves a little and get back on track leading pretty kick ass lives. *high five*
Kids who grow up to repost a repost of a repost of a repost of a repost are either bots or someone that uses "introvert" to mean "antisocial". There are no other options.
Lawyers, professors, highly successful entrepreneurs, experts in their fields...actually it was a minority of kids in the gifted program from my school who didn't do pretty well....some struggled in their 20s and 30s- but most came out really well...a few were complete disasters...so, sorry, bud- its you- not gifted kids in general.
nah, some are slackers, but once they find themselves amongst similarly intelligent peers they see that they have to work- but having a work ethic instilled in any child is important regardless of supposed "gifted" intelligence...
Most kids will notice anyway. Might also depend on whether you're able to commit the resources. My teachers absolutely told me I was gifted, but not in a praise sort of way. Instead there was a clear target of "listen kid, you're going to have to learn to put effort in sooner or later, so here's how we're going to try to challenge you right now, and in ten years we can say we told you so". Not that I listened at the time, so I almost failed a year of college, but they laid a good foundation.
The purpose of a hobby is to bring you joy - if it fails to do so to such an extent you abandon it, that's the hobby's fault, not yours. Even if it's a matter of, "Damn it, I'm a doctor! I don't have TIME for [insert hobby here]!" hobbies are still just a supplement to our lives.
We don't owe them anything. They're not people. They're not pets. You can regret not having time for them, but they're not an obligation. It's natural and normal to move on to new things and leave the old behind.
It may be the fact that they love them but are mad they dont have the time for them. My fiance is a post doc associate and he gets frusterated when he doesnt get any chill time. Sometimes he works 60-80 weeks on a 40 hr salary, with over $100,000 in loans. The amount of overworked he is is criminal

You don't have to be academically gifted to be the first one

what about me? I'm anxious and spiral into self hate at the slightest mistake and I was never gifted at anything.

Why do we built this narrative of universal hopelessness? Many people are having happy, fun and productive lives.

“I was a gifted kid” is the intellectual equivalent of “ in high-school i once scored 3 touchdowns in a single game”.

Best to not tell kids they are gifted. They often think they don't need to put in effort and end up underperforming, in my teaching experience.

As an engineer, my hobbies are not abandoned, they are there to be picked up whenever i feel the urge.

That falls under the 'spiraling into self hate' stuff.

I'm a doctor that spirals into self hate when I think about my abandoned hobbies.

Little grammatical peeve of mine. "That" is a pronoun that refers to an object, while "who" refers to a person. You are a doctor WHO spirals.
FractalShoggoth
Listen here you pedantic fuck.
Thank you for your service. I was also making this mistake and now I will not.

But I’m an adult who considers myself an object. Now you have insulted me.

who says doctors cannot objectify themselves?

I was taught "who" = person, "which" = object, "that" = person or object.

If they are a doctor in the American Healthcare system, they are an object....
MstrES
Maybe they don't consider themselves a person anymore. I know I didn't at some point in such a spiral.

Doctor is a role not a person. Either way works for me.
