Yeah, but guys like Trump who make it a lifestyle skew the statistics. The median number may be more like 1:10 guys attack women.

That’s a false choice. We can blame men AND acknowledge the victims.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

At my height, I'm taller than 98% of the population. I see people taller than me all the time.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Finally someone not fetishising her. I'm shocked it's upvoted this much (and delighted).

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Ty! That's what I thought.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I mean, this kind of suggests that men aren't holding men accountable, I promise you many of us would beat the living fuck out of a friend if we found out they were a rapist. We're not all like fucking cops.

That said, I always stand with people who've been raped, whether they're women or not. We need to do whatever we can to stop it.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

We just have to work for sexual assault being prosecuted and not swept under the rug, like it is often done. In my opinion statistics become meaningless if we put every perpetrator to justice.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd love to know that number myself.

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Oh, shut up, Friday.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

How come nobody in this entire post thread actually read what it says? "How many women out of 3 will be assaulted?" Is the actual question.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bring back hat pins! I always wonder how many representatives got stabbed with them for it to become an issue for them to outlaw.

5 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

How many Presidents have been tried for rape? Underage can't give consent, so it's ALWAYS rape. Release the Epstein Files and stop the Epstein War!

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The reason is not sinister. It's because we know about the women being raped because they report it. Rapists are rarely caught, so we don't know if it's many men, a few men, or in some cases one man raping hundreds. Reality sucks sometimes.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Women gonna just be throwing out rpe accusations left, right and center/s

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, if Lisak and Miller (2002) is to be believed, it's just over 6% of men who will willingly admit to rape if you ask about it. Just don't call it rape. Ask if they've ever gotten someone drunk or high to have sex with them, or had sex with someone they knew didn't want it, or used force or threats to get sex. That is more than 1 in 20 men who will just tell a researcher, yep, I did that.

"A recent study from "Violence and Gender" found that nearly 32 percent of college male participants said they would "force a woman to [have] sexual intercourse." When asked if they would "rape a woman," that number dwindled to 14 percent." https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/men-dont-know-meaning-rape

"White and Smith (in press) surveyed three cohorts of men across 4 years of college. By the end of the study, 14% had reported committing attempted or completed rape and 34% had reported at least one act of sexual assault perpetration."

Probably closer to > 0.5, but those that do tend to be repeat offenders. I only know one sex offender, was a guy I work with trying to blackmail men in the public eye with sex tapes he made of the two of them.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Whether you realize it or not, you definitely know more than one sex offender.

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That probably true. Sobering thought.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don't disagree with the idea, but part of the problem with that is that abusers are far more likely to have multiple victims than victims are to have multiple abusers.

If we ONLY focus on the number of men who are assailants but that number is, say, only 1 in 10, then that belies the number of victims they have abused.

5 months ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 6

That will be much simpler to fix, imho

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then the statement should be “1 in X men are abusers and they average X victims each”. That would (hopefully) show that not all men are abusive but the ones who are are a serious problem.

5 months ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 2

This is the way

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I agree that we should be aware of both numbers but I think her point is that currently the vast majority of the focus is on the victims not the perpetrators who get ignored (or worse defended) and that's why they can be repeat offenders.

5 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

I think that perpetrators generally don't care how many other perpetrators there are, or about the victims at all. If we ENTIRELY shift the focus from victims to perpetrators, then that data can be misconstrued as less of an issue than it is

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yeah I don't think she's saying flip it entirely away, but right now it's like 99% about the victims and the perpetrators get away with it because those who are neither ignore or downplay them (or treat them like an environmental hazard like a wild animal not as people who make choices).

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Notice how she says "start talking" not "talking instead" or anything. There's an implied "too" in there.

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

cracks knuckles
looks like ~
1/20 have committed ra.pe or sexual assualt.
and about 1/4 have done some sort of "coercion"
Actually higher than I thought.
Stay Strapped!

5 months ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 10

Objection: There is a non-zero number of "coercion" cases which are actually "I was completely into it but regretted it later."
Counter-objection: Non-zero, but EXTREMELY close to zero.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Heavy are the hips that wear the strap.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Aren't sex crimes horrifically under-reported as well?

5 months ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 1

Yes, but the problem is that when you do studies like this you can't account for that and have to ignore it. Also in the same vein, male victims of sexual crimes are even more drastically under reported even among the approximated unreported incidents. So if you start trying to account for unreported crimes, then everything becomes pointless.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes!

But the rapists are also prolific. Like, the people who commit sex-crimes don't stop with just one. People who make awful mistakes stop after just one, but the sex-crimers just keep going.

5 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

The word is "rape".
And you have to support such a statement with some hard evidence.

5 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 17

also really surprised saying the word "rape" doesn't just get you banned around here

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Out-right slurs take a few days of reporting to get you banned these days but imgur never had tiktok speak or censorship. As long as you're not using it as a threat it was always allowed.

The 81% number comes from studies that basically boil down to "has anyone ever said or did anything to you that you didn't appreciate."

That, in itself, is spin that does a dis-service to the actual severity of actual s.a. victims.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

. It's both correct and accurate to say that "If the victim rate is actually about 44% and the number of men doing it is statistically 1/20, then yes, logically speaking, most of the offenders ARE repeat offenders." and still listen to the victims fully. Also, to bring a finer point, The 81% you're referencing includes sexual harassment, while the subject being discussed is about assault, which is different. Further, don't forget that 1 in 10 men have also been the victim of assault.

Oh, and you're right. She is incorrect- if you remove age from the criteria it's actually lower. It's 1 in 5.
https://www.nsvrc.org/resource/national-intimate-partner-and-sexual-violence-survey-2015-data-brief-updated-release/

All of this is to say, why don't we all place the blame where it belongs- on the assholes committing sexual assault.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Umm... so the 0.15 men out of 3? (it's 1 in 20)

5 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

I question that 1 in 20 number. If 1 in 20 men randomly sexually assaulted women, each one would have to assault about 7 women to reach 1 in 3 women women as victims of sexual assault. Do you think Donald Trump stopped after sexually assaulting 7 women? No! Donald Trump, known sex criminal and extremely probable pedophile, sexually assaulted hundreds of women and girls. And yes, Donald Trump is an all time sex criminal, but if the average is even 1/10th Trump's numbers then it's 1 in 50 or less.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yes, she's saying we should focus on how that 1/20 are the source of the problem more than how many women those men are hurting.

5 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 6

I know what she's saying but I also think there is a psychological reason for saying how many women are impacted because it's easy for the public to dismiss "1 in 20 men" as being "not a big problem".

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yeah I agree there. The fact that it's impacting so many women should still be talked about too.

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

That’s a bad take to say 1/20 is negligible and then let your guard down. I’m saying zero in on that 1/20, identify these individuals and prosecute them for full retribution.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It's not a "bad take" it's psychology. Humans are easier to trick than you realize.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Are you saying that people will look at the numbers as downplayed and it’s just inevitable and in other words we should just accept this? Bc that’s morally bankrupt. I’m saying this as a man.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the math doesn't work that way. a very small percentage of men commit most of the assaults.

the 1 in 3 number here includes verbal assaults as well. so, just think of that one jerk - in his entire lifetime - is it likely that he abused just one woman with his sexist comments?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This sounds like "not all men".

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes. that is my point.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well yeah, "not all men". At a minimum you've got guys like me who'd never get laid if not for proactive/aggressive women. Also, when this topic, with this exact same picture, came up 9 days ago I tried looking up corroborating information. I actually couldn't find any reputable sources that would say "one in X men did A." What information I could find from relatively reputable sources showed that in 2013 only roughly 1:1,000 men were incarcerated for sex-related crimes. ->

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Incarceration rates are incredibly low. That's not the stat you should measure against. Less than 4% of rapists spend anytime in prison. So it's all men until it's no men.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what do you mean? there will always be those men. this sounds like some catchphrase. can you explain.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm open to reading your citations. The only numbers I could find after half an hour or so of looking were strictly for incarcerations. Incarcerations, mind you, cover more than just people in prison too.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now yes, under-reporting, and yes, not all sex pests get incarcerated. Even then there's a massive difference, like 30,000% difference, between 1:1,000 and 1:3. That's a massive number of people not reporting and/or cops not arresting and/or judges not prosecuting/incarcerating and/or uptick in SA-related crimes over the last 13 years.

That's not to say it couldn't be the case, all of those factors are real and add up, but a massive disparity warrants reputable corroboration.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you just cannot reverse the statistics like the meme. there is no possible way to collect the data to do it or even estimate. that is why, despite under-reporting, it is much more realistic to present victim statistics.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok. I'm getting that your biggest fear is false accusations. We can just believe the women. I'm over the misogyny bullshit.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*rapists
And yes, the numbers are incredibly low. That's why women don't report. Don't want to be retraumatized.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yes, but keep in mind that this meme stat includes unwanted comments and rape - the entire spectrum of SA.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I presume "*rapists" is an attempt to "correct" something in my post. If it's the "sex pests" part then you're basically equating the trench coat flasher and public masturbator with rape. That in turn reminds me of that video that went viral on YouTube a few years ago where a woman said she was raped when her father slapped her mother, the neighborhood women called her friend a slut, and others engaged in other abusive and/or misogynistic behavior that was not rape in any sense of the word.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

to be fair, it's probably a lot less than 1 out of 3 men assault women. Usually, its repeat offenders, aka ... Trump and his followers.

5 months ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 21

Yep, which should make shifting the focus of the conversation onto that tiny minority easier.

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 10

absolutely. we should shift the conversation on the ~ 0.2% of men that hurt women... and then maybe castrate them.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Do you really think the rate is that low?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My father is not a trump follower yet is a predator. They're everywhere

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For real, real men hate these other guys because it makes us all look bad, as well as y'know just the depravity and disgusting nature of it all. Remember fellas, nothing is sexier than consent

5 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

Too bad cops don't think like men.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In the US a man sexually assaults a woman every 1.7 minutes.

5 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

assuming all of those assaults are new aggressors, that means every year, ~0.2% of the male population (~150million) are committing assaults. So, out of 3, it's 0.0062 men. It's a horrible statistic, but the US population is massive.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

They should arrest that guy!

5 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

juses.... I shouldn't have laughed at that

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be completely fair, that heavily depends on how you define "assault".
If that would be staring in a public place, ("visual rape" is a thing, surprisingly) the statistics might be awful.

5 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 19

"Visual rape" is right up there with "fart rape". The concept is insulting to those of us who have been assaulted.

(Those stats are still pretty awful.)

Is it fucking comfortable for anyone to outright stare, especially in a sexual fashion, in public? Hell no. Stop it
It's creepy. Is it rape? No.

5 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Define "stare". My girlfriend would define my appreciative glance at another woman as a stare.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

That is exactly what I am talking about.
The methods here range from "if the person is feeling assaulted, it is an assault" to "people are free to do whatever they want unless there is an nonconsensual physical contact".

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Right, so how many people have you sexually raped, and why isn't that number 0?

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 9

Username checks out.

5 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

I have to ask this question as well. What is being included in that definition? If a woman jogs by me in yoga pants, and she feels assaulted because I watched, does that count? Just saying, the term feels a bit vague to me. I mean I understand the physical side, but the emotional side of it is a bit hazy. I've had people here accuse me of assault because I put an extra mile on the treadmill when a pretty woman got on the machine next to me. It's not all cut and dried.

5 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

And while that might seem ridiculous (the treadmill example), someone here really thought it was assault. Definitions are important. I once spent a half hour arguing a point with a friend, only to realize that we didn't disagree, but that we had different definitions for what we were discussing.

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Likely worded to feel vague on purpose. There are easily searched definitions for these things. In reality, visual assault (not "visual rape") is stuff like voyeurism and exhibitionism. Unwanted sexual behavior, but involving eyeballs. Other guy tried to be disingenuous but now he just looks like a flasher

As long as you didn't lean over and lick the woman's neck or something? Staring at someone is creepy and makes them feel unsafe if it goes on long enough/they notice, but it's not assault.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tbh, if I went to the gym and a cute guy was there, and *that* made me workout extra, I'd mention the cute guy to my friends after. Some people are cute, and working out is healthy. Just don't assault people about it

Also: Just as a thought. Why is it there are always guys in the comments like, "Yeah but 'don't abuse people' really depends on HOW you define abuse—." Nah. Stop. Shut your face and don't abuse people. Would you want a big burly guy doing it to you? No? Don't do it to others. Easy
