We have 2 restaurants and a butcher shop also offering food. Our local food bank can make 2 meals for every dollar they spend because of bulk buying.

There are a ton of restaurants doing this in my area. They’re all independent restaurants too. Haven’t seen any big money corporate places doing this. Hopefully some are.

I went to the food pantry yesterday and there were as many people there to donate or ask how to help as there were people in line for food. It was heartwarming. I'm going to help by NOT going to get food from the pantry in November. My family will be fine. Others may truly go hungry without it, so we will hold off and cut the budget elsewhere.

A note that if you gave food pantries the entire budget of SNAP and WIC, they would just send the cash to the needy... they are not set up to feed people, no one is... we have a full food delivery infrastructure, give people the money..

Policing what food people buy is so weird to me. I'm Canadian and if you get government benefits in my province, you get cash. You decide what to buy with said cash. Full stop, no restrictions.

Also, the food pantries can't reliably accommodate special diets. My cousin is vegetarian, so they try to load him up with pasta and white rice and beans, but he's also diabetic, so those aren't great options for him either. Some pantries let you pick and choose, other just want to hand you a pre-selected box of stuff, and half of it he can't use. Give him SNAP and he can buy what actually works for him, without wasting food or time and effort.

Taco John's in Nebraska is doing a similar thing. I think its a couple of tacos, potato oles (seasoned tater tots) and a drink for anyone, once per day. Its awesome these places are doing these things, BUT IT FUCKING BULLSHIT THEY NEED TO!

There's places where you can get fined for giving food to homeless people, so there's definitely precedent.

That’s only for those without a restaraunt license and health dept certifications. In the US anyway. As a restaurant, we can give away any food or non alcoholic drink we like. People get busted for distributing food without the carts or in the wrong place. Not saying it’s a good system, but the restaurant should be fine.

Feeding the homeless is already illegal in some places. There were people arrested for it. But I guess hey, these people have a home. It's such a weird construct that shouldn't even be a question. I saw a post here that indicated in summer places it is illegal. They were giving away free apples as their trees have more than they could eat. Neighbor called the cops. Cops told them to stop. I might have this wrong.

So much of the US is policed by local "morality laws" that fall on the behest of local sheriffs, judges & city councils. They make shit up and say that it's what the community wants. Most people can't afford to fight it in court so they don't even try. Silly things like "offensive" stickers on your car to lemonade stands fall under these "laws" smh so say the city council there claim the community is being shorted on the taxes that would be paid by purchasing a meal at a restaurant.

Giving away food needs safety measures though, like not home made particularly considering food borne illness and allergy. The problem is by doing a kind act you might kill someone by not asking the right questions like "you allergic to peanuts or seafood?"

You do realize that for like 99% of human history eating was done communally right? Like most restaurants started as places to buy your neighbors extra backyard beer, and sometimes a simple meal. It's why pubs are called pubs, or public houses. They were literally housewives opening their homes to the public kinda thing.
