Fun fact, I was a counterterror targeter for the United States government.
As well as an all Source intelligence analyst in the United States Army
The majority of my time spent looking for bad guys here domestically was spent looking through white supremacist groups
They are by far the largest problem that we have in this nation when it comes to domestic threats

As a white man, what the fuck is wrong with white men?
InternetAnonymityplz
Lots of things, but mass shootings in the US have a pretty racially representative spread. Don't fall for cherry picked samples from anyone. It's a mental health and access to guns issue, not any particular demographic's issue.
Beefkins
The majority of mass shooters are white males, this is hardly cherry-picking.
InternetAnonymityplz
The majority of the population is white. Almost all mass shooters are men, but the racial distribution of shooters falls more or less along demographic lines.

beeeeeeerkaaaaa
And look at the words you used towards me. Why would I side with you. In case you haven't noticed, there's a war on women currently.
Velkest
And there is "siding" again. The exact problem, this isn't about sides, it is about what is right and wrong. I don't want anyone on my "side" because there is just basic human rights and if anyone doesn't believe in those or uses their power to suppress them in order to make themselves more powerful then they are the problem. This is prevalent on all political parties at the moment because politics is about division to create power for one self, as is, in the current US environment 1/2
Velkest
Global too, really, just more obvious in the current shit show that is the US landscape. If everyone stops thinking sides and thinking about basic needs and not attacking, creating division etc we will all be better off. The current right and left are both creating division on purpose (at the highest levels, there are a few not guilty parties but basically 0).

Islamic extremism is still right-wing extremism
FingerLickr
Yes, But they deserve their own category. Iumping them together would be disingenuous.

Tesaphine
True but it kinda implies that Republicans and Muslims are on the same side when they absolutely are not. They may vote for the same people, but Republicans regard Muslims with the same contempt and disgust as they do immigrants, and deliver the same amount of violence towards them.
AlmightyElephant
The key thing is that despite their under-representation in the overall data, Islamic extremists are still the archetypical image of a terrorist in most people's minds.
The graph including them as a separate group is there to illustrate that exact point. It strikes us here as odd because we understand the ways that Islamic extremism and general right-wing extremism are functionally identical, but we're not the target audience.
Chumbawhumba
True, but 24% is a pretty extreme number for less than 2% of the US population.. that requires it's own statistic surely
mercyPandaRunner
2% of the population are muslim, not islamists. That's analogous to 50% of the country not being militant Neonazis. We're not talking about your regular MAGA or Charismatic Church doofus in this statistic.
Chumbawhumba
I think everyone is capable of making that distinction, but when it comes to the question of who or what is the strongest driver of extremist violence (keyword extremist - coming from the extreme end of a population subset) religious fundamentalism comes FAR ahead of political ideology. That can't be ignored.
mercyPandaRunner
True, though the divide here is not religious : non-religious. Though I'd support that separation too.
Chumbawhumba
Yeah, that's a fair point. I did wonder why it was included in the statistic at all tbh.
Derrial
The statistic includes the 2016 Orlando night club shooting where 49 people were killed, which accounts for a lot of percentage.
ExecutiveProducerWolfDyck
If they want to differentiate themselves, they should label them christian extremists.
DontSayRepeat
You're not incorrect, but when we are speaking about domestic attacks They Don't Really pop up. Not to the degree that we have been seeing for the past decade or so. And when I was working as a counter Terror targeter the mass majority of cases were all white supremacist groups
IceWeaselX
They really should just label them both ways to emphasize that while not allowing right wingers to claim it's just Islamists.
• Right-Wing Extremism (Non-Islamic)
• Right-Wing Extremism (Islamic)
• Left-Wing Extremism
usernameusedinlessplatforms2
How about right wing Christian extremism and Islamic extremism if you want religious labels?
FiftyShadesOfMascarpone
↑ This. Even if it doesn't apply to one in a thousand, some unstable person who snapped under the constant anti-Middle Eastern discrimination and drove a truck into a crowd or whatever isn't really an islamic terrorist either but gets lumped into this category because of his cultural background.
usernameusedinlessplatforms2
Yup
Asadsadsadclown
Can't remember the last mass murdering right wing atheist, aside from maybe that incel that shot up a women only gym. Also Christianity and Islam are Abrahamic religions along with Judaism that worship the same god. So they are basically all the same.
genielamp25
there have been many extremists throughout history that have committed genocides because they think that they are NOT the same. many of them were appointed as pope before doing so.
ButtblasterMcAssmaster
A lot of right wing extremist violence is racially motivated, not religiously. Or at least not obviously religiously.
Asadsadsadclown
Not directly religiously motivated but they are generally religious. There is massive overlap in the infinite venn diagram that creates the average mass shooter.
QuitLookinAtMineAim

Guns. it is Guns isn't it, 100% of School Shootings involved Guns.
thelategirl
Nobody mentioned school shootings, or even shootings...
Do you think guns will change the ratio of right-wing to left-wing violence?
Whether it's guns, knives or bare knuckles, perpetrators of violence are a LOT more likely to be right-wing.
So no, guns aren't the real problem, or at least they're not the cause of violence. Right-wing viewpoints are though.
spittytrinkles
Swords, It is Swords isn't it. 100% of School Shootings involve Swords. Wait, that can't be right. Let me research that,
GUNS! It is GUNS! 100% of SCHOOL SHOOTINGS INVOLVE GUNS!
raisarevolt
"it's not guns" says the only country where this happens on a regular basis.
Revnis
100% it's guns granted in poorer countries things happen they're just classified as militants etc.
thetonestarr
People are downvoting you because you phrased your comment poorly. I'm almost certain you weren't objecting to gun control, but the way your comment reads, it definitely looks like you were.
spittytrinkles
Yeah. The Gun Crowd can't take a joke.
Revnis
If this was only guns Islamic tarrorists would drop drastically in this graphic. It's MURDERS by groups Islamic ectremests normally use bombs, Americans tend to use guns. (westerners which could include Islamic groups but usually speaking those extremests aren't home grown)
Revnis
I'll note incase anyone is confused Islamic extremests aren't the same as say a Muslim or even just Islamic people, hut those wishing to impose their beliefs on others by violence and force. (no the irony isn't lost on me and is something I also vote/speak against)
mercyPandaRunner
But the two sections in the statistic don't mix. "right wing extremists" in this sense are part of one continuum, while islamists are an entirely separate subculture. So it does make sense to part them like this.
Harbltron
If your personal ideology is concerned with restricting the rights of others instead of respecting them, your politics fall right of center; whether that ideology comes from Islam or not is inconsequential.
milkmymisanthropy
What's your definition of "rights"?
slamorama
There are so many subcultures to right-wing extremism, why do you feel the need to parse out just the Muslim ones?
mercyPandaRunner
I did explain it, didn't I?
One set mixes, is often hard to separate, often pursues shared goals, often has interconnected or overlapping personnell or structures and ideology. The other one is not just entirely separate, they are arch enemies.
In terms of representing data, splitting them up like this has several times the explanatory power than just lumping it together and having endless sophistic arguments about who gets the blame. We CAN talk about the label. Which i assume has to do>
mercyPandaRunner
with "classic" domestic right wing extremism being a traditional category we are familiar with for more than a hundred years. Islamic terrorism is a separate phenomenon, that came up much later in western countries.
slamorama
"The other one is not just entirely separate, they are arch enemies."
Well, we just had one right wing extremist murder another right wing extremist for not being his particular subflavor of right wing extremist. The right wing is often arch enemies with itself. Race is just one factor of many.
mercyPandaRunner
And now the far right groups are splitting up into 3 camps and go to war with each other? Or do they just stick together and blame it on the left, the immigrants and the usual suspects?
Btw. i didn't say anything about race. The fact is, there won't be a MAGA rally in a mosque or islamist conference in a KKK owned building. One set of right wing extremists mingles with each other. They don't mingle with the others.
slamorama
"One set mixes, is often hard to separate, often pursues shared goals, often has interconnected or overlapping personnell or structures and ideology.
I literally can't tell which "set" you are describing.
mercyPandaRunner
Are you kidding me? Can you link me to the KKK x ISIS-K collaboration? To the Muslim Brotherhood chapter of MAGA?
judyblue
Yes, but they are typically differentiated because political motivation vs religious motivation. Islamist extremism is a big enough subset of right-wing extremism that's worth pointing out.
BrockEffingSamson
Are we pretending that Donald Trump would be anything more than a failed real estate developer and minor reality TV star if not for Evangelical Christians?
judyblue
Not at all. Just that their motivations are different. Al-Qaeda, for example, attacks Western nations that it believes oppresses or supports the oppression of Muslims around the world. But American political right-wing groups, like the KKK, are often racially motivated, anti-immigration, etc. They may also be Christo-fascists, but just because they're religious doesn't mean they commit violence for the same reasons that Islamist terrorists do.
medimr
They're differentiated because right-wing shitheads in this country don't like being reminded that their extremism is indistinguishable from Islamic extremism. It would make it harder for them to demonize Muslims as a whole.
usernameusedinlessplatforms2
Quite a lump of Right-wing extremism is christofascism in action. So a lot of it is also religiously motivated.
The need to point out islamists and not pointing out Christians...
A person yelling "Allahu Akbar" will be marked as religiously motivated even if it was racial or political motivation. Person yelling "God is great" while attacking an abortion clinic will not be marked as religiously motivated.
Doing that split in reporting is politically motivated. (Right wing motivation)
Comet260
Abortion clinic bombings, anyone?
OmegaRainbow360
Great point, thanks for sharing: although I think of myself as somewhat careful about context, this intentional "islam Vs right wing but let's not mention it's also Christian" approach was flying under my radar :/
judyblue
We probably don't have good data on Christo-terrorism.
Islamist extremists attack over perceived oppression of Muslims all over the world. They may not be domestic. They always attack in defense of Islam.
Western right-wing attacks are usually domestic and usually a defense of the homeland from perceived invaders. They attack to defend their country (hence "political"). They may believe their country is/should be Christian, but it's not always in defense of Christianity. That's all I meant.
usernameusedinlessplatforms2
/gallery/kdBlG2r <- there is one from today.
... its more common than you think
SalmonTheWise
Plus islamic terror attacks perpetrators self identify as part of bigger movements like Al-Qaida or Islamic state even if their connection to actual network is non existent and they just read about them online. Right wing terrorists present themselves as lone wolves even if clearly inspired by some extremist movement, they don't give shout-outs to KKK or Proud Boys.
slamorama
White extremists attack over perceived oppression of whites. They always attack in defense of whiteness. The "homeland" in right wing extremisms is almost always synonymous with a white Christian homeland.
Similarly, most Islamic extremism isn't purely religious. Al Qaeda, ISIS, and bin Laden weave into their manifestos detailed critiques of US, Israeli, and Western imperialism and occupation of Islamic nations.
