I got tired of explaining this to people. The entire system was old and falling apart. You can't just tear up an entire city and replace all

immense cost it'd take to hire all of those crews to work at the same time, and that you'd shut down the entire city for a while because

Why aren't the citizens of Flint electing new officials who can do something about the water?
HolyCringeLordBatman
Entire reason flints water got fucked in the first place is because the repub gov put an unelected person in charge above their officials
thesmelge
I thought it was getting sorted? Last I heard it needed a systematic replacement of the whole water network which takes time. Will research.
https://www.michiganradio.org/post/does-flint-have-clean-water-yes-it-s-complicated
tl:dr; Water has improved across the city, work still ongoing to resolve major issues.
B3N15
The problem is that they have to replace their entire water system. They have to go block by block and replace every single pipe.
A quick googling indicates that they are scheduled to finish doing exactly that by July 2020.
They did. The problem is the damage is done- the entire water system needs to be dug up and replaced.
I actually visited there in 2017. The roads were a patchwork of gravel and broken pavement as crews dug up pipes for replacement
100% realness here from a frequent Detroit visitor. The roads are all like that LOL. Pothole capitol of the earth.
This wasn't potholes. This was pavement delibrately torn up to replace the pipes beneath, then the hole filled with gravel and left that way
But then there wasn't enough funding to re-pave the road afterward, and so it was left as a broken patchwork. Looked a lot like home.
that might have just been a Michigan thing... our roads are pretty bad everywhere
omh2
Because fixing it is a complicated mess that no-one can agree on how to do. Most of the core infrastructure has been fixed at this point,
but in order to fully fix it, so everyone gets safe water from the tap, they need to replace nearly every waterline in the city, most of
which is actually private property. No one can agree on how to deal with the waterlines on people's property that connect to the city's
fredgiblet
Maybe the city or state government should get to work on that? Why is Flint's goverment's incompetence relevant to the rest of the country?
ImgurPlz
Because infrastructure is federally funded.
Wrong. Infrastructure at the state and local level can sometimes be offset with Federal expenditures.
Because if a local government fails then the next largest govt steps in in favor of the people all the up to fed That's how government works

But of course, the guy that actually fucked their drinking water was a Republican.
And that was how many years and governments ago?
Oh, many. The acute crisis ended years ago. Final resolution requires replacing bazillions of miles of pipes and nobody's willing to pay.
This was the guy https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Snyder
He was just part of the problem. IMO Flint should of been a wake up for the U.S to finally remove all of the old lead lined pipes.

Will research.
thesmelge
https://www.michiganradio.org/post/does-flint-have-clean-water-yes-it-s-complicated
thesmelge
tl:dr; Water has improved across the city, work still ongoing to resolve major issues.
B3N15
The problem is that they have to replace their entire water system. They have to go block by block and replace every single pipe.
mustangcharlie
A quick googling indicates that they are scheduled to finish doing exactly that by July 2020.
OdinYggd
They did. The problem is the damage is done- the entire water system needs to be dug up and replaced.
OdinYggd
I actually visited there in 2017. The roads were a patchwork of gravel and broken pavement as crews dug up pipes for replacement
mustangcharlie
100% realness here from a frequent Detroit visitor. The roads are all like that LOL. Pothole capitol of the earth.
OdinYggd
This wasn't potholes. This was pavement delibrately torn up to replace the pipes beneath, then the hole filled with gravel and left that way
OdinYggd
But then there wasn't enough funding to re-pave the road afterward, and so it was left as a broken patchwork. Looked a lot like home.
ccman87
that might have just been a Michigan thing... our roads are pretty bad everywhere
omh2
Because fixing it is a complicated mess that no-one can agree on how to do. Most of the core infrastructure has been fixed at this point,
omh2
but in order to fully fix it, so everyone gets safe water from the tap, they need to replace nearly every waterline in the city, most of
omh2
which is actually private property. No one can agree on how to deal with the waterlines on people's property that connect to the city's
fredgiblet
Maybe the city or state government should get to work on that? Why is Flint's goverment's incompetence relevant to the rest of the country?
ImgurPlz
Because infrastructure is federally funded.
UglyHorribleGrouchyOldMan
Wrong. Infrastructure at the state and local level can sometimes be offset with Federal expenditures.
butterflybuttler221
Because if a local government fails then the next largest govt steps in in favor of the people all the up to fed That's how government works
bugbites120101
Chump for Trump are you?
TwCl
Why is that dude's hair relevant to the rest of the country...or Flint? You can look at this image both ways you know.
fredgiblet
Yes, I agree. OP's post is dumb.

Exactly, why do we parade around only those idiots with the most ridiculous signs?

What?

how is america a developed country lmao, "why is people literally not having drinking water the responsibility of the government?"

That has no connection to what I said, or the OP's post. You are stupid. Thank you for playing and have a nice day.

Thank you for posting the relevant portion of why your previous post wasn't about what I said.

More like 'if their water is fucked, why haven't they voted out the local government responsible?'

empathy towards people that need help should always be relevant

I mean in what function though. These guys don't get the haircuts they already aren't getting and Flint has bad water? Where's the point.

So true

Didn’t their government fuck them over in favour of a factory? The conservative way.

Ah yes, Flint Michigan, that bastion of conservative politics
mardukkur
Flint's water was fucked by Republican Rick Snyder.
moonsaves
The last governor from 2011-2019 was Republican, so yeah.

But of course, the guy that actually fucked their drinking water was a Republican.
fredgiblet
And that was how many years and governments ago?
mardukkur
Oh, many. The acute crisis ended years ago. Final resolution requires replacing bazillions of miles of pipes and nobody's willing to pay.
TitoAndy
This was the guy https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Snyder
ArmedandOverclocked
He was just part of the problem. IMO Flint should of been a wake up for the U.S to finally remove all of the old lead lined pipes.
Stolf
Ah but you see that would mean giving a shit about infrastructure. Need that money to blow up brown people across the planet for their oil.

My bad
