In most cases it takes less than a minute to take out, wash and put it back in. Don't let it get to the point where muck flows over the filter, through the overflow gap or you will find it all in the plumbing, at higher time/labour expense.

Wait... People actually let these things get clogged? How much crap are y'all leaving on your dishes that this is a regular problem? I think I've had to clean out my dishwasher trap like... once... And it barely had anything in it. I only cleaned it because there was a funky smell coming form the dishwasher.

I didn't use mine for a bit while on a long term job. Kept having issues when I got back. This and running it empty with a full cup of cooking oil in the bottom fixed it. Avoided an expensive repair call.

Why cooking oil? The salts aren't enough? We use ours daily and I can see how the grime could clog it up completely if it dries out but how does oil help? Especially with it clinging to the bottom of the waste pipe syphon.

No idea. Old plumber said it was a fix. Something to do with all the plastic parts. Maybe it lubricated them? I have not had one error since I did that a year ago

No, because there is no specific hole to insert it. Use a drill with a large tip...

Do your dryer exhaust vent while you’re at it.
It will definitely take more than a minute, but you might prevent your house from burning down.

This dryer and vent gets taken apart along with a vacuuming about once a year or two. The stuff builds up and will cause a fire or burn out your element or thermal limit switches.

Using a 1/4 cup white vinegar with each load will keep the lime scale from building up in the filter and makes the dishes lime spot free.

Everyone has these easy to get to filters but don't know they even exist... I know move exists and is nearly clogged but God damned if it doesn't have 35 tiny screws and some impossible Jesus latches holding stuff together that I have to get through just to get to the part where I can remove the pump and motor housing that also houses the filter. Yeah I'm not cleaning it.

Nope. It is an LED that lights up every now and then. It prompts to clean the filter and then run a cleaning wash (without any dishes insisde)
