Btw kirchner still in govt as a senator, they still for this bs... no wonder drumpf would bail them out, hes related to this shit!

Money to prop up right wing authoritarianism while making sure wealthy USA corporations and individuals don't lose money on their investments there. Socialize risk, capitalize profit despite Argentina's history of defaulting on loans.

Literally to prop up right wing authoritarianism, and not even making the slightest attempt to hide it - Trump has publicly stated that the bailout is contingent on the current right-wing ruling party winning the upcoming elections.

"Kick out the insane libertarian who's burning the country down, and you can kiss goodbye to the bailout meant to stabilize your economy!"

Proping up Argentina so Trump's hedge fund buddies don't lose money?

That and Milei is a right-wing populist in the same vein as Trump. Other countries following the same path (and succeeding) is seen as an implicit endorsement of other's of their kind. It's why the Nazi's and Italians got in bed together in the 1930s, and why both helped Spain's Franco. It was seen as a way to strengthen the perception of their own rule at home.

To be clear this is less about supporting Argentina as it is a bailout of the libertarian investment bros here in the US that poured money into the county when they thought their guy was going to bring about a libertarian miracle and transform Argentina's economy.

This needs to be plastered on billboards all across the country, especially in every farm county.

Dude, US farmers can't read.

Don't worry, well devalue the dollar to set up fascism across the world. Don't expect to be able to retire on your savings anymore.

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought the free hand of the market was supposed to take care of everything?

10 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

For a libertarian, he sure likes handouts. Oh yeah, nevermind, hypocrisy is kind of their thing.

Good thing Musk saved us all this couple million from USAID and others. That’ll really offset the billions in wasted spending

So a couple of funny things about this that I heard today (haven't verified, take with a grain of salt.) is that all this money is predicated on him winning. No winning, no money. Also, that even with the money his polling is still down and not going the way he wants it to.

rump was always going to keep using us like his own personal piggy bank, and his goons support just that

Those huge sums are going to cause a severe shock on markets all across LATAM - Argentina, happy that it doesn't have any obligations, is going to try and extend its alliances. Other countries are going to copy and install right wing clowns so their kleptocracy can also benefit from the largess of the monster in charge, and all that money is going to fuel repression and spending in "national security" - that is, armies and secret police used for repression and the old torture.

unlikely. The reason Argentina even needs this second infusion of cash is because they are dumping it all buying their own pesos on the open market to try and keep their currency from devaluing. It's not working, as the peso continues to fall. Argentina has been trying to keep the peso artificially high. The "official" rate was something like 700 pesos per dollar, while the "black market" rate (the actual rate) was closer to 1000 per dollar. They gave up, but sentiment is still crashing the peso

Who'd have suspected that libertarian fuckwits would require socialism while pushing austerity on everyone else? Well, other than all economists ever.

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We always knew the US government loved toppling socialist governments in south America, didn't know they also loved propping up fascist ones

trump is just trying to help the farmers /s

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't forget the $20 billion in soy Argentina just sold to China instead of China buying it from US farmers. Oh, and Argentina never paid back its foreign debts and defaulted on its international sovereign debt nine times. Just saying.

Sounds like an investment a guy who bankrupt multiple casinos would make.

10 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Amazingly Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world 100 years ago.

10 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The fact it happened 9 times, it's the lenders problem

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not paying back debts make Melei the kind of fella Trump can relate to.

10 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

as i understand how all this works, the usa is basically buying 20b$ worth of argentenian debt, not just giving them 20b$, but argentina has defaulted on their debts 9 times?!

10 months ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

I thought they're buying argentinian currency for uc dollars 2bn worth

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's how you bankrupt multiple casinos.

Read about the US court decision that caused the last one in 2014. And then read about the dotcom scams that busted them in 2001, and where were those sitcoms based? And people say China is doing debt trap diplomacy ...

10 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Argentina was already in a recession from 1998-2001, And they recovered back into growth in 2002. They didn't lose their shirts in the Dot Com bubble. The 2014 court case was Argentina trying to decide which of it's debtor's to pay, and which not to pay. If you don't pay your debts, you are in default. Argentina was going to see a market crash in 2014 when they refused to honor their debts, regardless of if the courts allowed them to be selective about repayment.

Actually, the us is buying the Argentinian election. With great expected return on investment for Trump and bessent
