When I'd go "hang out with friends" I was really sneaking to the library to read.

I'd let you read to me. My mom used to read to me ,I find it very soothing when a woman reads
jridley
There is absolutely no fucking way in hell that I would be interested in a woman who didn't read. I'm not looking for an idiot.
forelle
"No men likes". Ah yeah one of those losers who think they have to tick boxes on the masculinity-bingo-card to be a real man. To be a real man the only box you have to tick is the one that says: "I don't care what other men think is masculine"
itsjustplaid
People who stunt kids' growth, interests and natural curiosity are fucking assholes and deserve to be stuffed into a sack and thrown onto a pile of legos.
QuatermainFT
This made me sad, then glad, then a little lonely. It's not a 6 word story, but its close.
rcgom
x is an idiot for 1)thinking he knew what men want, 2)discouraging *anyone from reading, 3)evil not idiotic for throwing away books
meowingintensifies
Ew, sounds like your mom dated Gaston. Glad that you still read and rebelled! Got any book recommendations?
Zinfandella
I'm about to start a book that I read when I was 13 or 14. I barely remember it since it was so long ago, but I remember really really liking it. It's called Snow White, Blood Red. It's s faerie tales for adults :)
Rijtjeshuis
Man, if someone said that to my kids they'd be outta my life before something else that happens really fast.
FetteredJuvenescence
Right? I don't understand people. I mean, I actually do, but I wish I didn't.
technofiend
How would that guy know anything about what men want?
Slappydupappy
You should ship him some books
uplookdont
A woman that doesn't just read but reads to her husband is my kinda person. Are you single?
drousnavat
Sounds like your mom had shit taste in men
WhiskyBravo

My wife always has a book with her, it's like Linus and his blanket. She has house books, car books, going to store books, Emergency Room books, etc. and yes these are all separate different books. she reads multiple books at the same time. I am glad she has a hobby that makes her happy, I will never get in the way of that.
LurkerDraven
Dumbass ordering for the whole table..
viskag
My wife reads ALL the time and it pisses me off. Because her stack of books is bigger than mine, and I’m losing the “who can read more in a year” battle.
DustyBibbles
Ladies, if you read a lot of books, like to play games and just be nerdy in general, I want you. Hahah
Exyr
Glad hes her ex. Ffs
PenguinNamedWobbles
When I first learned how to read I would make mistakes and told my mom that I didn't like it when I had to read out loud and was bad at it. So she taught me to read from fantasy books out loud to her, including all of the magic Kingdom for sale series. Later on I kept doing it and can site read any book or text out loud with no errors comfortably. In later grades a few commented I should have been a broadcaster or some profession like that.
astrangehop
Getting the audio right is supposedly tricky, but there is a but of call for it even very casually. Audiobooks are sweet, and there are places like librevox that do public domain books via volunteers. Etc.
woozle
what a dick. I love it when my wife reads. I just give her space to enjoy. wtf wrong with people?
Affray
1)I'm not that old and when I was a kid people could be mocked and beat up for reading too much or hanging out at the library. I think there
Affray
2)was even a boom of "Reading Is Cool!" style media everywhere to try and normalise being literate so nerds wouldn't be second class
Affray
3)citizens anymore. There seems to be this weird anti-intellectualism shift as time goes one, which sucks, I don't want to live dark age 2.0
FetteredJuvenescence
Ah yes... Grownups telling kids that something is cool ALWAYS works.
Affray
Must have worked, we're the most educated country in the world.
MasterKhajiit
Bookworms are the best!

I know how to fuckin spell it. Sometimes autocorrect decides for you and you forget to proof read. Sue me.
LizLittle
Oh, this is the Internet. They will.
walpurrga
i cant imagine anyone NOT liking bookworms! whats the harm? its a lovely trait imo!
euphoricopportunity
Just wait until you're winding between bookcases to navigate the house./s. I do recall a story of a man who collected so many books that ot damaged the foundation of his house though... Leading to University at Buffalo getting the books because a man couldn't store his book collection.
philthedoh
It really keeps conversations going which, to me at least, is so damn endearing
reverendbonobo
Man not like smart woman. Smart woman scare man. Squiggle lines in book make words that woman say aloud? Is witchcraft!
VincitQuiSeVincit
different era. older folk didn't value nerds like people do now. Gates/Jobs/etc. really changed the social fabric when they became billionaires.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
Nah, there were always bookworms and people who appreciated them. My mom had loads of books in the house when I was growing up, and her parents had the same. But there were also always ignorant people who looked down on 'book learnin", just like now.
dontgetEpstined
And even then they like em for the wrong reasons. Like they would be ashamed because their son loved reading and learning but wasn’t rich.
WalkingNature
"What's the harm?" they say, until you're having to comfort her because of something tragic that happened to a character. Having never seen the horrors and carnage that follows letting her loose at a $1/bag book sale. I don't even have my own library card anymore! Turns out a limit of 50 books at a time wasn't enough... (/s HEAVILY implied. I love my fiancé, books and all)
2graves
Where are these book sales
WalkingNature
Libraries, usually. Often they'll do weekend sales and if you go Saturday it's per book but Sunday in an effort to just get rid of as much as they can they'll do a buck per bag. This is NY state though, so obviously differs by area
Thisisallyourfault
Lol, just build the library. I myself have currently taken up Ikea cubby cases so I can double to triple shelf my books because. . . So many . . . Sooooo many. And perpetually more added to the collection <3
WalkingNature
When we eventually get a house, I already intend to turn a room into a library. Just a bit harder in an apartment, haha.
JohnnySilverballs
Your mom's ex was a moron.
AtmaDarkwolf
Ya no kidding, god lol, bookworm women are the best women. (well not the best, but highly desirable cuz a brain is freaking sexy and when said brain gets lots of food, even better)
4lmonddragon
And self conscious about it.
AddictedtoSoup
So a Trump supporter?
dontgetEpstined
Fuck this came full circle innit
MisterLemons
Rent-fuckin-free.
awkungen42
Republican type shit, right there.
ironymus
If you read @Op's linked post you'll learn he was a real monster that should have been killed years ago.
FuzzyX
I agree. Many men would love an intelligent, well educated, well read woman.
JohnnySilverballs
I know I would.
CallMeCourierSix
Dude perspective here. I would never, ever, in a million years, have a long-term relationship with someone who DIDN'T read.
The first time I met my now-wife she was trying to take a nap, but I saw a Mercedes Lackey book and asked who was reading it, and she immediately popped up from under the blankets on the couch. We spent two hours just talking books. That was almost 26 years ago, and we just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary.
Revnis
I'll say many people don't read for multitudes of reasons. That said there's a far cry from not reading because it's just not your jam, and hating people who do. Ie personally I don't read cuz I'm dyslexic so it's just fucking exhausting to read long form items but audio books are great.
Revnis
I mean on multiple levels, one he threw the books away not even fucking selling them. Two, why the fuck wouldn't a man want a smart woman. Three that's just straight up abusive. #encyclopediacrushingballs.
inboxmeyourcomputerporn
Two, because weak men fear strong women. Dumb men fear smart women.
JohnnySilverballs
I would assume, at least on your 2nd point, that he wouldn't want a smart woman because smart women are more difficult for a PoS that thinks like he does to control.
dontgetEpstined
Honestly I’m kinda like fuck mom for letting that around someone who relies on her for protection/health/safty.
FetteredJuvenescence
This.
FetteredJuvenescence
And before anyone jumps on me, yes, this would also be my opinion about a single dad who brought a woman into his kid's life who did that kind of thing.
SunnyCameron
My dad threw away all my books as a kid and said, “Books are for antisocial weirdos,”
Shmotzel
Mine had a strange middle-ground opinion that books are great to have and should be respected but reading them is for antisocial weirdos
SunnyCameron
This is not terribly dissimilar from my dad. My dad demanded I got good grades to the point where if I got anything less than an A on my report card, he’d hit me.
But then he’d turn around and keep me from anything that might expand my intellect, especially if it was artistic.
pareidoliaperson
When I used too much of my time on portrait painting my father told me do something else. When I build boats and cars with motors taken out of old toys he said are you still a child playing with toys? So many other comments like this. And it wasn't to make take a break it was to kill my spirits. The comments had no meaning or purpose. I grew up lost and confused instead of having a role model and guidance. Everything about me wrong is dedicated to him.
Sunshine12345
I'm sorry that guy was your dad.
psugab
Sounds like your dad was a dick
SunnyCameron
Pssh, nah he was normal.
Normal dads pull guns on their kids, right?
ImLurkingOnImgur
Normal dads pull put the jumper cables. How do you properly beat your kid with a gun?
psugab
If it's a revolver, the handle works well.
RedLanternGrodd
No...
SunnyCameron
Next thing you’ll tell me is dads don’t poor beer on their kids when they’re drunk or steal their college funds, liar 🙄
Arracor
.....so uhhh, he dead yet, or do we need to form up a posse...?
paullyboy1999
Hello fellow survivor
paullyboy1999
No, they kick you in the neck when youre 6 and crying on the ground because you just broke your collarbone and you aren't getting over it fast enough. They throw a full mug of hot coffee at you because you arent getting them the item they asked for, because it is not where they told you it is. But a gun? No, fuck no man. That's abuse
PosthumousExile
I'm also part of the kids of the worthless fathers club.
psugab
Jesus, y'all definitely need therapy and someone to go kick your dads' asses
paullyboy1999
I have been in therapy for a few years, it didnt do much to help. Father died and I danced a little jig on his grave and a few months later I started making progress. Its been 2 year since he died, between that and divorcing my wife who mentally abused me, I am a new well adjusted person.
FetteredJuvenescence
SalmySwims
Sometimes therapy isn't enough. Sometimes you just need to piss on the graves of those who wronged you.
givemepickles
The best therapy would be seeing my abusers FINALLY SUFFER.
SunnyCameron
Oh believe me, I went to therapy.
