I don't know what fucked up shadows you're looking at. Considering it resized the image from 1712x1964 to 105140x10610 and created details out of nothing, I think it did a pretty good job for a free AI upscale.

The shadows between the lips is thinner in the "upscaled" one, making the lips seem more full. Small details like that, on a human face, make a big difference. It's cool but it's a reinterpretation, more than an upscale.
