Video of a possible lightning ball recently captured near Alberta
Not absolute certainty, COULD also be a very bright electrical fire on a power line
Still cool, tho

Hm, is this the first time anyone ever recorded ball lightning with a useful result?
byronwilliams4010
The way I have seen it described, I thought it rolled across the sky.

I remember, lightning balls were huge in the early '90s, major topic of conteo-friendly sci-fi magazines.

That's an electrical arc from a power line. The way it flashed like that yeah an arc flash. Just looked like a sphere through the camera.
BarryTheCyborg
It's most likely an arc along power lines after a lightning strike https://youtu.be/ZbBmd1KphP8
SacrificialClam
Yes it is pretty clear, IMO, that that is what it is. It moves along a straight path like a power line and at the end it dissipates that its arcing between two wires.
wheredidwegonow
We had one in our house in 1986. Crazy

This was last summer out around Rich Valley. Neat stuff.

Ball lightning is so wild; itโs been reported moving around in aircraft without causing any damage.
Hootykai
St. Elmo's Fire I think it is called.

Oops, it is mistaken as St. Elmos Fire. My bad.

Usually only seen by the car following Lightning McQueen...

In the 80โs a Dutch astrofysicist and science teacher, Dr ir Dijkhuis founded a firm, Convectron, to harness the power of ball lightning. They did some experiments in with submarine batteries for power. Claimed to have created a ball lightning.

Do not follow that into the woods.

@TakuanSoho Did you go looking for power lines to see if there had been an arc or fire?
76000BatteryLlamas
That's obviously a electro anomaly. Throw a bolt at it and GET OUT OF HERE STALKER.

One of the earlier memories I have was reading one of those PG Tipps sticker books about Mysteries of the World or something like that. One of the cases involved ball lightning that appeared in a couple's house back hundreds of years ago.

....I was close on the name! Also, it was PG Tips...damn. Unexplained Mysteries of the World from 1987.

There is a tale passed down from my father's father's mother from the late 1800s about ball lightning. On day out on the plains of Oklahoma there was a ball that came down, bounced once, twice, and then a bright flash along with a BOOM and it dissipated. It apparently rattled the windows.
netutoring
Interesting! I wonder if there's any connection with the Oklahoma Spook Light that started showing in the 1830s?
floatationman
Unknown. I just have that little fragment I shared above.
