Trump is easily captivated by charismatic people, so I don't think the thinking went any deeper than meeting Mamdani and being charmed by him like so many of us are. Trump doesn't really care about political stances, he's all about personality.

and also when something directly affects him, Mamdani is focused on New York, so hasn't poked Trump's ego as much. When he has, the orange baby has thrown a tantrum, but loses focus quickly because he isn't a direct rival.
