Yeah, honey badgers are amazingly tough. Getting goal kicked won't phase it much. The elephant could've stomped down with all its weight and crushed that creature. It's amazing how it was so ignorant of the danger.
One theory is that elephants are emotionally complex enough to understand death and therefore are adverse to killing small animals by accident or for no purpose, in a similar way to most people. This may be why, anecdotally, elephants act cautiously when they are aware of things like mice that they can't see very well but don't want to step on.
They have a conscience for sure. Like how it’s unethical to kill something that’s too stupid to know what it is doing is wrong, so you have to protect it while you are also protecting yourself. He’s left with “Stop it asshole!” until the dumdum gives up and goes home.
Probably thinking "I promised the guys I'd take down an elephant. I can't go back without a tusk, man. I'm gonna die trying, because IF I do it, I'm gonna become a living legend!"
Yeah it is. The one that hit me hard was a few years ago when the Lord of the Rings fandom started ramping up for the 20th anniversary of the theatrical release of Fellowship and my immediate reaction was "No way that movie's 20 years old, it came out my sophomore year of high schooooooohhhhhh fuck."
You should look up the honey Badger Stoffel. He was at an animal rescue. He broke into every animals enclosure to fight them. Rode the rhinos belly around its enclosure. Fought the lions twice. Won the first time. Lost the second time. But had stitches and was ok. Broke out of its own enclosure several times. Stole the owner of the preserves bacon out of the freezer multiple times.
Sounds like he didn't need rescuing. Wasn't that the one where they introduced a female badger to calm him down, and he stood on top of her to escape his pen?
I think so. The two of them had also worked a double latch system together. They gave them a pit. He stacked up all the limbs in it to escape. After those were removed he used rocks. After that he used mud. They were very smart. I don't remember why he needed a home.

It makes one wonder. Like, after the first punt, there can't be any thought going on, right? Just pure, instinct-driven rage.

There was no thought going on *before* the first punt.

If you ever needed a prime example of tenacity to the point of self harm, there it is. Fucking honey badgers man....

Honey badger don't care.
Although to be fair, a chihuahua would absolutely try the same thing.

Circe007
I think the difference is the reason for doing it. Maybe the elephant just has stomped the badger’s offspring.

The badger realises very well how big the elephant is. It just doesn’t give a fuck.

It's probably not true but somehow it still felt the elephant was sort of gentle with it. They're oddly graceful.

Elephant also knows that a Honey badger will go after lions, so elephant wants to keep it close but not too close?

If the elephant wanted to kill the honey badger, it'd be dead. The elephant just wanted to be left alone.
SgtLemming
Yeah there were multiple points there where the honeybadger was clearly stunned. Elephant could've just stood on it if it wanted to kill it.
