My dog growing up was the opposite, she'd bring a mouthful of kibble from the kitchen to the living room where we were sitting, drop it all on the carpet, eat it piece by piece, repeat til she was full. She didn't like to eat alone.
An eighth of a can? My cat would have killed me. I had to feed him 2 cans of 200g or 1 can of 400g.
Otherwise he'd be grumpy... and I already put him on a normal feeding regimen, given that my uncle overfed him.
The bugger was so brazen that he even recognized when I'd usually get up... which wasn't fast enough for him once. Bastard jumped into my bed from the 2 m high cabinet, right on my stomach. I jackknifed and the bugger still had the audacity as if I'd been at fault for starving him. :)
That would make them feel extremely uncomfortable and they may in fact not eat anywhere else. If you relied on someone else entirely for food and they only let you eat on a sidewalk near a busy street, you'd have some mental anguish, no?
Of course it would be uncomfortable in the beginning, breaking bad habits is not supposed to be "comfortable". The cat may refuse to eat anywhere else for a while, but it isnt going to starve to death under a watchful eye, and when it gets hungry enough, it will eat. They could probably start the training by putting the cat in a transport case around feeding time. Being a pet means you are responsible for the animal and when you are responsible for a life, its your job to care for it responsibly
My first thought was trauma from before op took them in. Then reinforced by continuing to feed them this way. Not that it’s bad or anything, it probably could have been trained away but who cares as long as kitty feels safe and happy
Would need to ask a zoologist, but it may be a natural evolutionary trait.
If you're out in the wild and half of the living beings around you want to eat you, eating while out of sight and protected by something (a bed in this case) is probably the smartest thing to do.

I found my cat as a kitten in the dumpster at work. When I first got him he would only eat or poop if I was in the room with him.
