Are there any youtube videos that have a done a deep dive into what was lost when anime transitioned from hand-drawn to digital? One feels compelled to say that there was a lot more detail back then, but also certain abstractions that let the imagination fill in the gaps.

It is an accurate adaptation of the manga. If you liked the other anime adaptations, it might not be for you—unless you liked the manga and know what to expect.

I've actually gone over Eva many times with my buddy, he thinks she wasn't actually trying to do anything with shinji, and that she was trying to motivate him as she presumed a teenage boy would be. I haven't watched it again since this talk, I'm open to it, but my memory doesn't see it
In the End of Eva movies she basically tells him she'll make him a man if he comes back alive which is both in line with her attempting to manipulate him and it being really questionable to begin with, and in that way. The whole Mitsuragi/Shinji relationship as well as Kaji/Asuka was probably intended to be uncomfortable.
(Spoiler) In fairness she’s literally moments away from bleeding out when she says that and as soon as Shinji leaves she mentions Kaji and asks the air if she did the right thing.
I think her relationship with him is intentionally uncomfortable, because she’s also very maladjusted, but mostly I think it’s her manipulating him with what she thinks he wants.
Anime in its hayday was not at all mainstream and targeted at non mainstream or Japanese. Not like pedo-policing was such a trend back then. Shin Chan was a cartoon for kids ffs.
The funimation dub was definitely not for kids tho, but in terms of the original theres maybe something to be said about not all nudity being sexual.
Not to get all weeby about it, but it seems like western culture has completely abandoned anything even vaguely sexual as ever having comedic value, and not that stuff like Benny Hill and American Pie hasnt very rightly aged terribly, i think somebody completely accidentally falling face first into someones boobs or crotch can still be funny.
It's kinda weird how pedo stuff has been quite present all throughout recent history, but we are the first generation to publicly raise a critical eyebrow at it.
