Looks like Lilo in a crown and white dress

Fun fact: the main reason they gave Mario a moustache was because it was really hard to draw an expressive mouth in an 8-bit sprite, so they just covered it with hair.

Same with the hat and overalls. Everything was to simplify the design.

You can definitely tell that original Princess Toadstool sprite was royalty, partially from the crown but mostly from the Hapsburg jaw.

Looks like it was taken from 3D-SEN, the 3-D Nintendo emulator.

In the alternate universe where I get to be the art director, puppiesandanime gets the job for maintaining the overall style, but there are some *really* good ones there.

I've tinkered with pixel art, and it 's amazing that anything in NES games looks any good at all, the color palette limitations are killer

It IS! both palette limitations, and with CRT there were lines inbetween pixels too. I watched a whole thing about how they actually used that defect with CRT to smooth out sprites and introduce new shades they wouldnt have otherwise. Its why a lot of newer emulators have filters they apply to reintroduce that fault, because on modern screens they are too sharp, and thus look bad. Its really cool!

There's no Sprite in this. I was hoping to quench my thirst.
