So one year the planets aligned and April Fools day fell on the day after Easter Sunday (Śmingus Dyngus) and which was just after a week long Easter break from school. But that Monday my kids had the day off from school because of teacher institute day which they completely forgot about. We woke the kids up in a panic, y'all going to be late, we overslept! Creating a huge chaotic morning. Both kids rushed to get dressed, ran into the kitchen dressed for school in their backpacks ready to go....
...upon which we splashed them with a bucket of water as is "Śmingus Dyngus" the day after Easter Sunday tradition (Google it). OMG DAD?!? Whyyy? "April Fools, there is no school today! Now get changed, we're going to Opening Day." Which also fell on that day. The White Sox happened to have their home opener that same day. What are the odds? We still talk about that day many years later.

The best prank I ever pulled on my pupils was the first year after the pandemic. On April 1st I gave them a letter to take home to their parents. Made it look real official too with the county letterhead and everything. I read the letter out loud, basically telling them that due to the pandemic it had been decided to postpone the summer holidays for three weeks so we could catch up. They were FURIOUS!!! Right until one of them stopped and said "Hang on. What day is it today...?"
Why? I could agree that it should be more spread out over the year maybe, but kids need rest and time to just be kids. This Calvinistic nonsense that everyone should work hard all the time can get stuffed if you ask me.

Personally, I like the idea of a three-semester system, with two weeks off between each one.
In Norway they have a 2 month summer holiday, which I'll happily admit is too long. My solution to that is to give all the pupils voluntary homework that I also inform the parents about, which means that most will do at least some repetition over the summer. But I would rather it was a little shorter and maybe some of those weeks could be spread out over the year. Like I said, the kids need their rest too, and breaking up the year a little could do them well.
I have nightmares where that actually happened and I end up losing my mind and yelling at admin for us being in sessions still at the end of July. Starting teaching in 2019 was a trip lol.

When they decided we should bring the kids back to school, they still wanted us to limit the group sizes to prevent widespread infection and keeping distance. And depending on the levels of infection progression in society, they used this 'traffic light' model. Red meant small groups and larger distances, yellow was larger groups and less distance, and green light was basically back to normal. I'm not sure how effective this was, but the most annoying thing was that they kept changing it. 1/2
And I mean it could change from one week to another, back and forth. Which meant that the schools had to rearrange groups and rooms and teachers all the time, which, as you can probably imagine was a huge pain in the ass. So while it seems in retrospect that Norway did quite well in dealing with the pandemic, this system was probably not the best idea. 2/2
