I will be honest, I wanted to make a movie dump, but it ended as just a lot of stuff pilfered from shittymoviedetails on reddit.

WHY!?

EDIT: Friday Frontpage! Thank you very much everyone! Hope you have an awesome weekend! I do reviews as a Hobby, and today I challenged one of the greatest: Adventures of Robin Hood is said to be the best adaptation of the character ever, so I tackled it to see if its true. You can check it here https://youtu.be/giQZhbWQbGk

#2 "Let's TALK about the BONUS situation"

2 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

#1 that movie was like if the director wanted to make a movie about the modern war in Iraq, but all he could find was bows and sword.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

#5 Don't blame it all on color grading. Take a good look at those comparisons - the major difference isn't the grading, but the lighting. The older films are lit to have shadows and highlights, saturation, contrast, and dimension. The new films are lit to be "even" and flat, because that makes all the SFX and CGI easier to add in. And if your film is FX heavy (as most modern blockbusters are), flat and boring wins nearly every time.

#3 "The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" is a novel written by Evie. She recast herself out of modesty.

#10 It reminds me, a bit, of a line from The Sunset Limited (and I will probably butcher it); "I loathe these discussions, where the village atheist must revile endlessly that which he denies the existence of in the first place".

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#1 Still not as rough as Ridley Scott's Robin Hood with Russell Crowe that had a literal D-day stylized beach landing scene that if the landing boats wasn't made out of rough wood you would have thought you were watching Saving Pvt. Ryan.

Should be fine as long as they weren't breathing to begin with. Couldn't be any worse then the aluminum powder that made people sick or the make-up no one could eat with or the copper based paint that caught on fire and caused 3rd degree burns.

#1 Perpetuates a long-held movie tradition of lead or major characters either without helmets, armor, etc - or with significantly different clothing from those around them - because Hollywood is convinced the audience is incapable of actually following the action in the movie.

2 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

to be fair probebly routs in old VHS movies having the pixel resulution of not a lot so want to make sure that peaple can see the hero. no helment and another set of clothing. or else its just a blur.

#2 Alien: Romulus leaned heavily into this dystopian class commentary, and it was the best part about the movie. A preview of a future SpaceX mining colony.

2 months ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I loved Romulus. Entry Of The Gods Into Valhalla playing when they arrive on the station was a fun callback to Covenant too.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

All the other forms of media for aliens lean into this as well. All the video games and comics make it clear that the W-Y is the super evil and treats human lives as resources to be converted into cash.

2 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

And Alien Earth does a bang-up job of portraying the 'billionaires are not like us' divide as well. Literally using people's lives as bargaining chips without a second thought.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

#7 Man, I'll never find all the words to fully express how much I hate Hollywood's general disdain toward the more comic-bookey elements of superhero stuff. The only reason this isn't the worst Catwoman costume put to film is because Catwoman 2004 exists.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I appreciate the idea/artistry behind "what if their hero costume starts as just an arbitrarily put together outfit that matches the vibe", but it doesn't seem to be done well usually.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

To each their own, though I'm also less interested in the "They're just starting out" aspect. One of the many things I loved about Superman 2025 was that they just went "He's been doing this for a few years already, here's the tl;dr".

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Origin stories made sense when all of them are functionally reboots, but I have noticed they're starting to skip origin stories for the most common. The most recent Spider-Man also skipped straight to him already being a hero.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am actually wanting to see stuart fails to save the universe. I saw that image and went "Is this real? oh please be real" Even if it's the shittiest TV show ever made it's going to be such an amazing premiere.

#1 I had the same problem with Game of Thrones. All that winter, and not one toque. Idiots.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

#10 THANK YOU, someone else thought the same thing I did. In an awful brainwash movie full of terrible writing, the worst crime is that the atheist character isn't even atheist. Like, they couldn't even set up a straw man correctly

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#10 Bullshit. No Kevin Sorbo movie has writers. He just shows up and sucks on camera for an hour or so and they all go home.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

#3 This still baffles me. Like, it's the early 1900s. It would've been perfectly realistic to have her character be on the other side of the world totally out of contact. Instead they chose to replace her with some random who did absolutely nothing in the movie except stand out not being Rachel Weisz.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I will say, she did an EXCELLENT job at that portrayal. She is so Not Rachel Weisz that I don't actually remember her name, so her name is now Not Rachel Weisz. (It's short for Not Rachel Weisz Or Anyone I Care Enough About To Search IMDb For.)

And yes, I did see Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The whole thing. The one, single kudo I will give it is recognition of the Five Classical Elements from Chinese lore. They didn't take the easy route and use the Western four, relying on audience ignorance.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly, just drop a line or two about her off on expedition in South America, East Africa etc and issue solved

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

#14 was this movie really that bad?

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The most generous description I have seen given is "animal farm if it was written by the pigs." It is an attempt to strip the politics from the story and present a quirky talking animal kids movie. The most shocking thing is that this was a passion project Andy Serkis has wanted to do for years and not studio interference.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's really odd. They already did that movie, it was called Babe. Of all the stories to strip politics from, animal farm doesn't have any story without the politics! 😂

Came to say this. I don't think I know a single person that she looked better after the makeover.

2 months ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

That scene wasn't about improving her it was about Claire bonding with her.

2 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Well they really fucked up the messaging on that one if that’s the case.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Okay but that's not how the movie represents it. She goes out and immediately receives compliments from the jock guy and it's implied they start having a relationship

2 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

My take is that they meant to imply that since her parents neglected her, her "crazy" persona was totally performative and attention seeking, and once she made friends with someone who actually cared about her she could drop it. Not entirely how that works, but to me it's a more logical reading than "goth bad, pink bows good" in a movie ostensibly about people craving authenticity over superficiality.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

No one's watching her when she uses dandruff as snow in her picture, or when she makes a Cap'n Crunch sandwich; those aren't performative, that's her being herself. Of course, the compulsive lying IS predicated on a need for validation. It's almost as if John Hughes wasn't a very good filmmaker

Stuart as the main character plus Lauren Lapkus and Barry Kripke make a reappearance? it's everything I wanted from the original show!

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly, I applaud them for just fucking sending it. Time for a completely new genre, let's fucking put it in the Big Bang Theory Universe because lol.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I agree. It looks like a very unique take on a spin-off, actual sci-fi, and I am willing to give it a chance for sure.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I like a spin off going into a different genre. I'll probably watch it, and I only watched the first couple seasons of Big Bang Theory before I got tired of it

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

We are in the strangest of times of what gets made and what gets cancelled. When I heard about it I also thought it couldn’t be real, it sounds so stupid and can that character carry a show (never a fan of BBT myself, think it plays into a lot of bad tropes and weak jokes). For the people involved, I hope it is a success and provides for them; for the sake of entertainment, not even art, I hope it gets cancelled before the end of the first episode.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

The best way i saw it put was "Big Bang Theory is a show about smart people for stupid people".

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The way I saw it was “put the nerds on a pedestal so then it isn’t punching down when we constantly make fun of them.”

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It sounds less stupid than the premise of Young Sheldon though.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

were you a really huge fan of the Big Band Theory?

The Young Dorsey spin-ff wasn't bad.

#3 Highlander 3 has entered the chat.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That just got sucked into the swirling pit that was our disavowing Highlander 2. There can be only one. And there should have been.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was 30 years before I learned there was a Director's Cut of Highlander 2 that axed the entire 'aliens' angle.

It's FAR from the movie's only sin, but it was the worst one, so I'm glad they at least addressed it. (Even if their solution wasn't THAT much better.)

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I actually have that on VHS somewhere around here. If noting else, it fit in better with the continuity - if you ignore such little details like The Prize being not much of one, it didn't really matter if he was the only one left, and Somehow, Ramirez Returned. At least they got rid of the rocket powered skateboards.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey, the suit-fitting scene was awesome, even if it made no sense to magically revive Ramirez using, what was it, the quickening? The prize?

That scene, as out-of-place as it was, is somehow my one fond memory of the movie.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

tv series was honestly not that bad. when his friend died and returned as an immortal was sucha plot twist.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The one with Adrian Paul was pretty solid, and in some ways better than the movie (I mean, it didn't have a French guy pretending to be Scottish, or a Scotsman pretending to be Egyptian pretending to be Spanish) But ... there were two other TV series as well. I'll just say that the 'there can be only one' applies to television as well - in one case someone decided that a movie about cutting people's heads off would make a fine Saturday morning cartoon; then they also decided that the alien

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Angle was neat and interesting and _that_ was the story (sic) that they wanted to tell.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Duncan knew all along that Richie would become immortal when killed. At the beginning of the TV series he FELT Richie burgling his apartment. The hint was subtle, but we could have guessed it as well.

#1 So, when I was in the US Army, we had a platoon leader that was 100% anti-Kevlar... thought it was stupid and heavy (it was heavy); said it wouldn't stop a bullet except a glancing shot and those would probably have missed your head.

One day we were having engineers dig positions for our APCs with big-ass bulldozers, driver wasn't wearing a helmet, bulldozer flipped over and the driver hit his head on a rollbar... brains did not stay inside his head.

After that, the PL was a helmet zealot.

2 months ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 5

Sounds like he had anti-vax logic: helmets were originally adopted because they noticed the abundance of non-bullet head injuries on the battlefield.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Funny how people like that refuse to change until it affects them personally.

2 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Yikes.

Some credit to your PL for being able to learn from other peoples’ mistakes I guess?

Yeah, after that he we called him the Helmet Screamer....

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's hard as fuck to flip a bulldozer.

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Not if you are digging a trench for an APC and a wall collapses and you roll into it

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Negative...it'd be hard as fuck for someone to convince any decent operator to run a dozer close enough to an unshored wall for its collapse to effect them.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

All you need is some brand new E2 running it... and yes, the US Army will put a brand new private behind the laterals of a D7R

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Was gonna say. These arent "decent operators". These are people who joined the US military.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I will note, we were luck AF to get the bulldozer, usually you get the worst piece of shit ever sold to the US Army, the M9 ACE:

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The newer rifle-rated Kevlars will stop a 7.62.x39 and even if they didn't, you should still wear a helmet.

The last time the US went to war without one was in 1898...

I will also note that the British Army issued helmets and saw the number of wounded soar thru the roof... it took them a bit to realize that those wounded would just be KIA without the helmet.

2 months ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 1

Yup. And all NATO troops in Desert storm et al saw a big increase in TBIs from simple blast waves. But that's because previously, troops encountering IEDs died. Today the gear catches most of the shrapnel. But we don't have any PPE for simple concussion waves.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We do not.

The NFL provides every imaginable piece of safety equipment and they have had zero effect on TBIs... Football like combat are just too dangerous to play.

Huh, lookie that. TIL.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The first helmets during modern warfare had nothing to do with bullets but with splinters of varying origin. That was what usually killed you if anything happened to your head. Yes, head-shots happened, too. But far less frequently than other stuff flying around at lethal speeds. And I'm fairly certain, that's still the major issue in conventional battle fields. Because some mortar or artillery coming down even when not hitting you directly is still lethal for the bits and pieces flying around.

2 months ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

"danger close" for artillery fire is 1km radius or something like that? because of shrapnell or just debris flying around...

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

450m, which is weird cuz an M795 HE round only has a blast radius of 50m (and a casualty radius of 150m) and a fire for effect has rounds hitting a bit randomly on the target which pumps up the CEP to 250m (with a bunch of tubes firing on the same target with set sheafs to create impact dispersion... FDC will create the dispersion for the guns since the US Army uses high quality ammunition and good gun barrels, if everyone fired the same grid, the rounds would hit within meters of each other.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shrapnel and blast kill far more soldiers than die from gunfire... indirect fires kills far more troops than direct fire, generally 80% of casualties in combat are from shrapnel from high explosives.

The goal is to provide a 'steady and unending rain of steel' as the cannon cockers like to say.

The original Tin Man actor got a lung infection from the aluminum paint and was recast. He was clinging to life in the hospital while they recast his role and changed the costume. Lion's costume was made with real fur and heavy as shit. And Judy Garland...Was a young female in the Hollywood system.

2 months ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Oh gods, you don't know? Most of the actors on that set, be they main characters or extras, contracted health problems, often lifelong ones, from the makeup, costuming, directing, and just about everything else. I believe the tin man's body paint was lead based, Dorothy was routinely abused and forced to work insane full-day shifts, asbestos snow, toxic green makeup for the witch, actors getting hospitalized from chemical and head burns, and on and on. Read up on it, it's horrifying.,
