I don't know if it's the way I was raised, the 'tism, or a combination of both, but I operate on the belief that all people have intrinsic value, are intelligent and competent, and have good intentions. This has gotten me into trouble on a number of occasions, because I said something that, without those closely-held beliefs, could sound like I was questioning their character, or something equally too personal. Robert is my spirit animal.
This is why you think about a simple question to ask them, answering which will cause them to lock up halfway through their answer as they realize they were wrong.
There are solutions. Stop going to meetings. If you HAVE to go, dont say anything. And if you HAVE to say something because some idiot asks you something directly and you absolutely can not avoid answering, say exactly what they want to hear. even if it's lies. I have been doing this for 10 years and it;s pretty relaxing.
Appropriate tone is entirely subjective and context based. I have recently been to HR because a coworker felt my being loudly opposed to ways of working was stupid and would negatively affect others mental
Said coworkers now can't work the hours they need to be able to care for their ailing mother, so is now having to pay a carer to cover the gap.
Same person had previously got upset because I yelled down the office to get the attention of the first aider when another co worker collapsed.

What is publicly? Only other coworkers or external customers? Correcting also needs to come with an appropriate tone.

You know, not being a condescending prick in the workplace is also a valued skill, Robert.

Then stop choosing to be an idiot then.

Most people are idiots on accident. Yourself, for example.
