A) Dude has FUCKING pipes. B) he is funny as hell C) it was what (shortly followed by his live at the Apollo where he walked around Harlem giving out tickets) made me really start to enjoy him as a performer.
Not generally my bag, but I respect the talent and heart.
Iirc, this is from an snl skit where they ran an online streaming radio (Pandora, i think) and the radio was experiencing issues and they needed a worker to improvise and sing live while they fixed it.
Not sure about the Rihanna and Whitney ones but the rest were scarily good, plus she hits all the notes of course. She's gotta be one of the best singers alive right now.
I know this is the whole art-v-artist thing, but I can't stand Ariana Grande. She is objectively a phenomenally talented singer, but from everything I've seen about her she seems to be just the WORST kinda person.
The same thing she and her four octave range were doing on Victorious. Waiting for the right break. That show had several people with singing and acting talent.
I'm talking more about the voice she was using. My kid started watching it recently and I was "that can't be her regular voice, why would she choose to sound like that?"
I've used this one a couple times and people are always so afraid it's going to be some kind of overdose joke and then they're just like "god fuck you"
This is the kind of thing I think of when a lot of commentators on this site or the Internet at large complain about pop stars not being able to sing. You might not like *what* they sing, but a lot of them can sing their asses off.
This lady here can sing her lungs out, Ariana Grande does not my make my type of music at all but she has a great voice, she isn’t the autotune kind, she is small as a woman and she sings out incredible power
I say it every time this comes up. 99.99% of all professional singers can sing, you may not like the music they make but they can all sing. Yes that means Justin Bieber, lady gaga, that country singer you hate, the screamo guy. All of them. Look up any artist you hate singing acoustic and they are likely crushing it. I will agree I hate some of the music they make. But that's just their style choice (or their labels). You dont become an actual pro singer without being able to sing
Even when they can't it's a lame argument for hating on an artist. Oliver Tree can't sing for shit without autotune but I like his music better than Ariana Grande's.
The thing that gets me is when they auto-tune themselves, but then try to pass it off as if they *don't*. If you just own that shit--like Kesha does, for example--then I've got no quarrel.
Probably cos a lot of what they sing is repetitive, low effort songs that barely use a fraction of their talent and is always processed to hell anyways.
And sure, a few can't, and get ridiculously popular anyway, but half the time thats about performance or composition. In such a case, when watching a music video it becomes a dance(ish) performance with music backdrop, and when listening to music the singer is just another instrument for the composer/mixer to use.
I remember when someone got busted on SNL for lip syncing, then speculation that there was a lot of it happening. Letterman asked Pink about it on his show so she belted out one of her hits right from the interview chair. No music or anything and it sounded better than the recording.
She said that one of the band was supposed to start the backing track that included more instruments or something like that, and they started the wrong track. But there was clearly singing on that track.
I already liked her music, so it's not like I did a 180 or anything, but I was astonished the first time I saw her play piano and sing - like how is it the same person doing this and also "Poker Face"?
What annoys me is when actors can sing. You're watching a sitcom you like then they have a musical eps and I'm like, really? you're good at that too? Oh you're good looking, can act and SING...then a little while latter....oh and dance and play an instrument, of course you can. kind of like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vda6lmGpS44
A lot of people I would probably say most people that are in entertainment took every opportunity to do anything related to entertainment when they were young, because they enjoyed it and because every skill you have opens more doors. Of course you're going to want to be able to tap dance as an actor, even if you hate tap dancing, because it might get you a role. Of course you need to sing too
trained actors have all kinds of skills. learning those skills is part of the training. wanna be successful? Get good at those skills you might need. respect their professionalism.
ElusiveThing
Not sure I've ever heard a song of hers, so I have no baseline here. But she aced these, that's for sure. Impressive!
Grapeape2000
She's got talent, She should think about going pro.
Ac1dBurn72
Bruno Mars did a similar bit and HOLY SHIT.
A) Dude has FUCKING pipes.
B) he is funny as hell
C) it was what (shortly followed by his live at the Apollo where he walked around Harlem giving out tickets) made me really start to enjoy him as a performer.

Not a fan of her music but her talent sends chills up my spine
leroy666
The Whitney gave me chills.
InnerBushman
TIL I'm an Ariana Grande's fan. I only wish she sang the stuff I like, then life would be great.
EricPisch
Damn she is hella talented
Rips4w
Covid Donut Licker can also sing. News at 11.
thegarts
She looks 10
certainlynotaserialkiller
dont like her music much but she got one great set of pipes on her.
murdock89
This is that asshole that licked the donuts that one time, right?
tidepool
She actually spit a loogie on it so she didn’t even taste it herself and then said she hates fat people.
kkanne20
Not sure about the Rihanna and Whitney ones but the rest were scarily good, plus she hits all the notes of course. She's gotta be one of the best singers alive right now.
raitchison
Smart of her to not do a Beyonce impression.
Sebastopol140
...a GRANDE voice !

Donut Licker!

He did some of the singing as Ray Charles, if I’m understanding on earlier covers Charles performed live where there were no recordings.
Fuckweasel
Damn.
TooSoonOldTooLateSmart
She was fine in Wicked. Beautiful, exciting, flirtatious, God's gift, but awful.
GuitarsAndCodeAndRage
But can she do "Alone" by Heart?
LIES! No one can do "Alone" by Heart!
AnythingMuchShorter
I love how she proved she could do any of them, but just totally dumped on Rihanna
johnblood616
Rihanna the sweat shop owner?
possumattack
Have you ever known a billionaire to make their money in an honest way?
possumattack
Begone, bot.
BubblesTheFish
In this economy even kids need jobs.
RummageSaleBubbler
She'd be great at Karaoke.
RummageSaleBubbler
Prob sings Defying Gravity great too /s
DudeThatsRacist
What in the fuck, with a voice like this, was she doing on Sam and Cat?
Heelcat70
The same thing she and her four octave range were doing on Victorious. Waiting for the right break. That show had several people with singing and acting talent.
DudeThatsRacist
I'm talking more about the voice she was using. My kid started watching it recently and I was "that can't be her regular voice, why would she choose to sound like that?"
Heelcat70
The answer is pretty simple. Dan Schneider was the producer.
DudeThatsRacist
Ah, I hadn't thought of that ;)

What is Whitney Houston's favorite type of coordination?

I prefer her Celine Dion to Celine Dion.
AK90
I would recommend listening to Cassie McIvor singing that song on The Voice Australia because HOLY SHIT was it good.
Patrone26
Céline Dion is a goddamn Canadian cultural icon.
duffman3335
Remember when Kelly Clarkson cursed because Ariana sang Kelly's song BETTER than her?
jekath
I don't, but Clarkson is a very good singer. Grande is just beyond that. She is really one of the greats.
NozzleBozzle
Did they add some effects for Britney and Shakira or was that all her? It can't be... can it?
Columbus43219
It really is all her. I've heard her do it in other places too.
emu314159127001
She has REALLY good pipes, and would've grown up listening to these women. I bet that's all her
NozzleBozzle
That's just incredible

She can, anyway. Killer freaking pipes. I've actually liked the one song of hers i knew was her when i heard it.

StNickCage
Agreed. Plus she was humorous which is dope.
southoffrance
Agreed. I'm not a natural fan of Whitney Houston - it's not my music genre - but I saw her live in New Jersey in 1987 and, my goodness, what a voice!
Someshithead241
Probably cos a lot of what they sing is repetitive, low effort songs that barely use a fraction of their talent and is always processed to hell anyways.

TBH it's the only reason I watch The Masked Singer.

Yes. Even writer/performers with not-so-great or weak voices *become* good singers if they do it all the time. Some become great.
andwings2go

Pink has some serious pipes. So does Ariana.
thedudeman519
Yo Pink has some serious fucking pipes.
lurker1989
Hearing Pink sing acapella made me a huge fan of hers!
MrBurberrySteve
I think you’re referring to the Ashley Simpson episode?
thegarts
And then she blamed her band or something. I remember watching it live. They made some jokes about it on the next episode.
ConspiratorM
She said that one of the band was supposed to start the backing track that included more instruments or something like that, and they started the wrong track. But there was clearly singing on that track.
ArtisanFartisan
She blamed it on acid reflux.

Same thing with Lady Gaga, anytime it is in doubt there is a clip of her doing a pitch perfect Sound of Music performance

And Kesha!

Fuckin' Wayne Brady. Glorious bastard can just do whatever the fuck he feels like and do it brilliantly.
Morkath
Being a good singer is pretty much entirely just practicing and training your voice. It's something everyone can do, just takes time.
sweetfeetpete
thedudeman519
That's baseball, baby!
pullingsixty
That used to be called the Triple Threat, where a performer could act, sing, and dance. Might still be but I haven't heard it uttered for years.
fakieflip180
Throw great comedic timing and they're the complete opposite of Jared Leto.
azazyel
Back then it was almost necessary. Lots of movies had singing and dancing. Not so much anymore. I mean a pirate movie back then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBVEhAJqVuM
