#15 Oh boy, I hate this shit. You want fascist dictatorships? Pretending that Democrats are just extra-hypocritical Republicans is how you get fascist dictatorships. This is just plain right-wing propaganda. Real "I don't know anything about politics that I didn't learn from a truck stop bumper sticker" bullshit.

#1 the true path to early maturity is not gender...it's crippling anxiety that makes you so terrified of disappointing an authority figure you exhaust yourself chasing an impossible standard of what you think they want from you.

A guy riding a llama through Pisgah National Forest in 1993 approached me one night and shouted, "Look at the rainbow, Artemis!" as his llama fell over and died. Bbq llama tastes like chicken. Kalmia are poisonous to camelids. There are no rainbows at night.

#1 -- As it happens, this claim that "Boys mature more slowly" is a modern myth, invented to excuse indulgent parenting of male children. In traditional societies, boys are working in shops and fields from about age ten and are expected to act with adult restraint as adolescents, at least in public.
Geistbar
#3 Chrisjen Avasarala from The Expanse kind of fits this. She's an elderly grandmother that is arguably the most competent person in the entire setting. But she's a political person and not a combatant. She is grandmother. Also she swears constantly.
brazzy42
She's very literally the "chosen one" though 😄 just not in a hero's journey kind of way.

#3 Hobbit or LOTR? I mean, Bilbo was 50 in The Hobbit, and Frodo was 50 when he finally left the Shire, so they were at least a stable adult or even middle age, since hobbits have their coming of age party at 33. Only Pippin was younger than 33, I think.
RatsLiveOnNoEvilStar
Yeah but neither one is really the "Chosen One" trope. If anyone fit that in LotR, it's Aragorn.
And since he is 87 at the start of LotR, he fits the post even better.
The rest of the Fellowship is his cats.

#1 They don't say things like that because it would be sexist????? This is 2025 can we drop this kind of talk altogether?
Toqom
My mom, a doctor, always said boys are stupid until 26 because that's when our brains stop developing. Happens much earlier in boys. All you need it a woman from a non controlled household. We were Catholic and my mom still wore the pants in the family

#1 Maturing faster has NOTHING to do with intelligence and leadership. I'm all about giving children positive role models, especially amongst their peers. But this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Its a great expression in person, too! I am fond of wearing a pirate tricorne and giving people nauti greetings.

I love tricornes. I also really love the over the top Napoleon style. I love that we have flush toilets on this end of history. But our hat situation is sadly lacking
Samthetrue
The ball cap is a sad substitute for a flat cap or fedora, and it certainly doesn't have the style of a bowler. But we have cowboy hats and beanie/watch caps that can be endlessly personalized.
spinbutton3
I agree....and good catch on the cowboy hats and beanies

#1 It’s also not true. Girls are forced into responsibilities and sex earlier, but our brains mature at the same rate. It’s nonsense that helps people (men, older men, and downright pedophiles) take advantage of 16-yo girls.
zFUBARz
It's about 60% nonsense, there are some developmental and hormonal differences on average, nothing is every 100% certain. but also girls absolutely get pressured into maturity by family and society much faster as well, which amplifies these things to the extreme. and I'm not going to argue against any abuse situations because those absolutely exist unfortunately.
Ivain
yeah, looking back that's what happened to my sister, she was expected to have her shit together long before I do. Hell, people have only been pressuring me to get my shit together in the past few years, while im nearly 30, while she was lowkey expected to be functional and independent even before 18.
oldguyexlurker
#11 Actually... an ornate golden snake armband that lifted its head and growled, "Go away." when a girl was receiving unwanted attention would be a really cool accessory. Would be really great if it had an bit on the tip of its tail that could be extended and dipped in a drink to check for drugs and then retracted back into the snake.
oldguyexlurker
Better if the eyes light up as it speaks so the recipient recognizes the source.
FoamingToad
So you get a gilded mechanical snake on drugs. Going to be a wild night.
oldguyexlurker
I mean, I didn't say to literally animate the thing through magic. All that could be accomplished through tech, but your idea has merit! lol.

The Belgariad to a degree as well. Main character starts as a child, but two of the main cast are fully ancient humans who have seen so many goddammit prophecies that they half ignore them. Belgarath says at one point that he's happy to fulfill a prophecy or two as long as he's not having to go out of his way to do so.
Kargathia
Slightly less magical, there's a series of books about an old lady who gets bored and joins the CIA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Pollifax
JadeNB1729
Nah, you'll never find Granny Weatherwax bound by any prophecy.

The Prophecy would change its mind pretty quick, but somehow still get fulfilled.

Other than that it's a perfect fit though.

#15 Oh look, someone thinks they're funny making "both sides" right wing propaganda into a meme.
I am not saying the Democrats couldn't do More, but every time there is a vote about something that does Anything for the middle class, it is like 90% of Democrats said Yes, but 100% of Republicans said No, so sorry you can't have it.
RunanD
The "more latina drone pilots"-style memes are really funny in leftist circles, but when they break containment and you don't know who is making them they can easily come off as some chud making the "haha who cares who fucks you, donkey or elephant amirite my fellow enlightened centrists" argument.
mouseasw
Here's your daily reminder that "middle class" is propaganda used by the owning class to divide the working class against itself.
Ivain
Like, yeah, the Democrats are also politicians, and they're not as good at inventing dramatic narratives as the repubs apparently are and thus appear to be less 'effective', but holy shit the gap between them on the 'evil' scale is so big now you have to be actually blind to miss it.
But since votes like in your example apparently don't make it into the morning news or whatever, and trump bullshit does, people think the dems aren't doing anything.
JesaraB
As an example...
JesaraB
These are things that Passed, but look at those numbers, and it will tell you a whole lot about the parties.

#1 ... Doubt. Gonna need some really careful research to see if boys or girls mature faster, and it's unclear what that even means.
r0b074p0c4lyp53
They hit puberty earlier. That's it. Nothing about intelligence or leadership or anything
GrepenJapon
It was my experience growing up that people raised boys and girls very differently and that always seemed the likely cause
rcbuns
true. seems scientifically inconclusive but there's recent evidence coming in that it's likely a myth: e.g. https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/news/2019/02/boys-lag-behind-in-brain-development-is-a-myth
ifyoutakemeseriouslythatsonyou
It's scientifically been looked at. Puberty starts earlier for girls than boys and neurologically their brains mature earlier as well. No time to look up the research but it's out there.
Tangurena
Girls get punished from an early age. So it looks like they mature faster - because "boys will be boys" is the excuse for male misbehavior at every age, even into adulthood.
thisistheusernamethatneverendss
Girls go through puberty earlier so it makes sense that their brain would mature earlier as well. From an evolutionary standpoint it’s beneficial for women to get to reproductive age earlier because their fecundity is so much lower than males’. Kinda like Idiocracy with intelligence, males can get away with riskier behavior because they don’t need to live as long as females on average to have the same number of offspring.
Also, “why can’t you be more like your sister?” Is pretty standard
xaddak
Whether or not the maturity thing is true doesn't change that the first thing is said and the second isn't.
Paradox1111
Maturity and intelligence are not on the same scale..so..thats not surprising
gablestout
Here's a starting point, indicating earlier development of executive function in girls (which aligns with the body of work) but this does not translate into overall better executive function...just that girls plateau sooner than boys https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8461056

JadeNB1729
I thought: "How do you measure inhibition?" So I clicked to read the paper. I now know that it is measured by "the Double Trouble and Sustained Attention to Response tasks." These are "An adapted version of the Stroop task" and "derived from the Corsi Block Tapping task." As far as I can tell, this is all that's said about them. I am glad that I am a mathematician and not a social scientist.
SithElephant
Those confidence intervals do not spark joy.
barnwolf
Why not? I'd expect large ones since boys and girls are mostly the same. The fact they have them at all is rather encouraging.
SithElephant
Because an unfortunate amount of the confidence intervals overlap. And, unless that is data with a prior analysis plan, cherry picking of the results that appear supportive further worsens the case.
rjmmbc
I had the same thought. Physically, yes. Emotionally/cognitively, sort of? Girls are generally socialized to be responsible/polite more than boys, and their brains may prioritize those connections earlier than boys. It’s at least partially true that girls mature earlier.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
Yeah but I think that's mainly due to societal expectations. Have you ever wondered why "boys will be boys" is a saying but "girls will be girls" is not? For centuries, girls have been brought up to behave as adults, while boys were given more leeway to "sow their wild oats". That's another expression that only gets applied to men, because of course women weren't allowed. It's only been in the last few decades that women have had some of the freedom that men have.
Tangurena
Also, many girls are compelled into being adults and caretaking of younger siblings. Which is called "parentification".
periwinklepanda
I've always wondered if there was a term for this. Thanks internet stranger!
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
I remember when I was 12, I got a summer job babysitting. Every day, 9-5, 4 kids. The youngest was 2, and the oldest was an 11-yo boy. I did think it was weird at the time that it was ok for me to babysit, but that he couldn't when we were basically the same age. Different expectations, though. He was still a kid, I was in the role of an adult.
