They're so silent when they walk and disappear much faster than anything that big has a right to vanish as fast.

...and that's when I browned the water.

Danger cow

Fun fact: During an infestation, a moose will carry between 30,000 and 100,000 ticks.

The correct phrasing is "...on the loose", not "...on a loose".
Not that it matters, but personally, I like to know when I make little mistakes like this.
If you don't care, then neither should anyone else and you can ignore me, lol.

Looks like a Jimi Hendrix mug but I need some feedback from anyone

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

His mug looked more moose-like to me.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's that dangly doodad on its neck? It's quite long.

1 month ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It's called a dewlap. We don't really know what it does, but it's been suggested that it helps with heat management.

Are those...walnuts?

1 month ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

They always talk about the flight or flight response. Some of us have the freeze response, that would have engaged here for me.

1 month ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Better than committing to the fourth response..

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The fourth response is fawn which is similar to freeze but part of the response is a sort of people pleasing response, which doesn't really apply here

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What I usually do when large wildlife wanders up unexpectedly is literally say "hi" give them the side eye for a moment, and then very casually start paying attention to the tasty looking foliage beside me. It seems to me that most animals at the very least are tuned into whether another animal is eating plants or not and whether or not you care about defending those plants.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The freeze response is what most people go through before flight or fight. Like just a half second of processing before picking one or another. But, some people never get past it.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's nothing wrong with a freeze response, tbf. Or sticking in it, if it's the safe option--as here, really. Non-threatening response, doesn't trigger prey drive, can help you blend in in certain situations, etc. Just in response to 'some people never get past it.'

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To add to that, it doesn't necessarily come before another response or only last a short time--it's a viable survival strat on its own

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ya see I'd pretend to sleep, maybe snore slightly, That way the animal would be all "oh it's sleeping, I don't want to wake it up I'll just quietly go away."

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Been working on my freeze response for decades. Sometimes it is better to let hot oil or metal set on my skin rather than spreading it around. Not all insects need to be smitten just for touching me. I'd rather be rational than rash.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same with, specifically, spiders. I have a tarantula now and if the worst happens and she bolts out onto my hands or something, or even bites, I don't want to panic-fling and kill her. I've dialled it down with wild spiders, at least, to the point where I don't fling; my reaction's more like with my cats, where if they scratch they get a firm but gentle reprimand and no jerky hands.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(I don't handle my spider, and I practice as safe as possible "handling" in terms of feeding/water changes and rarely even fully open the enclosure, but they can be EXTREMELY fast and I think it's better safe than sorry with my own reactions)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I guess sitting still and presenting as non-threatening is the best you can do if one walks up on you unexpectedly. Yike +1

1 month ago | Likes 264 Dislikes 0

Should have worn their brown sweat pants

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd assume the massive crap in my pants might scare it away. Which is exactly the reason I would have crapped myself...no other reason

“You reach back, grab a handful of shit and throw it in the lion’s face.”

“Where do I get the shit?”

“Don’t worry it’ll be there.”

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's just standard procedure.

1 month ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Me heading to taco bell tonight like v

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yep. Had similar experience backpacking, took a nap in my hammock, woke up to a moose giving me the sniffs. Could have stomped me out, I just froze and it moved on.

1 month ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

I think key is that if it felt safe to move this closely without being triggered into an attack or causing suspicious/threatening behavior from the person/thing it approached it is probably relatively unlikely to attack if the person just keeps still and doesn’t do anything to startle it.

I wouldn’t bet on it enough to just sit there given a chance to move away before it got close but if one came up with no warning it would be my guess on the best bet.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's how it’s with me and the girls, too. I sniff around. They freeze up, and I move on. v

1 month ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

They generally strike me as exceedingly "polite" animals, so to speak. They might disregard boundaries a little (what's a boundary when you're seven feet tall, right?) but they seem aware of their size and pretty delicate in their behavior.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

While I've never had an encounter, I heard all sorts of stories about moose while I was in Montana. Pushing a small parked car over a cliff, running across a field just to attack a hiker...lots of unprovoked aggro behavior. But that's just what I've heard.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I've heard horrors as well and definitely wouldn't go near one but all the vids I've seen are like this young gent

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have had to do that several times while hunting elk. Moose are terrifying. Play "ring around the tree" if they charge you, since they can't turn at speed.

1 month ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 1

Apparently cant do this with bison

1 month ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

When I say "ring around the tree", I don't mean a 30' diameter tree. I mean a tree that is 2-3' diameter at most. And also, I imagine it will be harder to be quick when I'm 65, which I have about 20 years on...

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did they decide the fate of that bison yet? Heard they were considering putting it down since it attacked unprovoked

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I heard they weren't putting it down.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Since it attacked “unprovoked”? Are you telling me wild animals need a motive to do wild animal shit in their own fucking home? Does this bison need to hire a bison lawyer to defend himself? Dicks out for Bisonbe!

1 month ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

They do in the land of the “free” lmao.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was at a campsite. Is there postings about wild animals and being careful not to interact with the wildlife? YES. Did grandpa do anything wrong in that situation? Not really - he just wasn't ready to be attacked. I think everyone learned a lesson about taking those warning seriously but I didn't want them to kill the bison for doing bison things.

A little too late to ask what to do

Majestic, and terrifying. If you've never seen one up close: they're bigger than you're picturing in your head.

1000+ lbs of dumb and angry, that's a nope for me.

1000 kg of mega fauna

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

One wandered in front of my old Dodge Dakota up in Maine and even as a young one, it still stood a good couple feet above the hood.

1 month ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Not exactly majestic, they're bizarrely proportioned dorks typically draped in swamp flora

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Especially in their final form.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My literal thoughts when first seeing a lion in the wild.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

People think they’re like big horses. They’re so- so much bigger than any horse you’ve ever seen.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

On average, they're actually comparable in height and smaller in weight that a shire horse.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes but those things are also absolute units so it’s tautological

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nope... bigger... biiigeeer. Mm-mmn, BIGGER!

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I remember when I was 3 years old and saw one outside my house in Alaska at the time. VERY glad I knew better than to open my front door to get a better look.

My daughter seen her first moose at age 3. Moose was looking through window. She was terrified.

1 month ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Most moose attacks are people walking their dogs

Moosen hate dogs

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its sorta like the "Is that a Crow or a Raven?" question.

If you see a large antlered ungulate and think "is that a moose or a deer?", its a deer.

If you see a large antlered ungulate and think "FUCK that's a big fucken animal!", it's a Moose.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s a young’un. He’s big, but not full grown moose big. Another clue is that he ran when startled. They were lucky.

1 month ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 1

Most moose, even adult males, would just sniff and leave in this situation. They aren't indiscriminate murder machines.

1 month ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

They're discriminate murder machines

Or male in the rut.

1 month ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

They're probably still even bigger than what they imagine after reading your comment. Full-grown moose are crazy large.

1 month ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Once saw one while driving a dirt road in NE Oregon. Was in a friend’s 2nd gen Prius and we could have driven under the thing without touching its belly or legs. Fucking massive creatures
