Hi, my mom who is very religious is trying to understand why I’m gay and is willing to look into some books. If you know of any books about coming out written from a Christian perspective, please let me know (I know it sounds weird, but Methodists and other denominations are quite accepting, also my mom is Methodist so the groundwork is there). It’s hard for her to accept, but she seems open so any recommendations for theological books that deal with Christianity and homosexuality in a positive way would be greatly appreciated. Preferably ones that have been read personally. I hate to recommend something (especially Christian) that I have not read … could be a secret de-gay book lol

The Bible.

might be helpful to try and track down some queer accepting Methodist ministers/pastors in your area and see if they can reach out to your mom.

Ahhh as a pastors kid (baptist essentially) I have now effectively put my parents in a corner. They have said some pretty awful things and not even acknowledged that I am married to my husband. The only times we see them is when my brother's are around. Hopefully it works better for your mom but it didn't really work out for mine. Good luck!

As someone who went to a Baptist school for a year, I just want to say sorry. And also say that I’m very lucky my mom is Methodist.

Maybe instead you should get her books on motherhood. Books that teach her to accept her child no matter who they are or what their lifestyle is? Seems to me the issue isn't that you're fay, its that your mom doesn't understand what unconditional love is. You shouldn't have to train her to love you and respect you.

I understand what you’re saying and for a long time that’s how it’s been. But she reached out to me so I don’t want to swat away her hand. If she’s willing to go out of her comfort zone I don’t want to meet her with hostility.

Sweetie…you do not ever have to explain to anyone why you are gay and no book will assist in this. She has to decide that she actually loves her child no matter what. I hope you find your way, know that you are loved by a whole community that won’t ever question why or how.

If THEY want to make things work with their mom, and THEY are asking for help, you telling them no book will help is the OPPOSITE of being helpful.

She's not owed an explanation, and he's not obligated to give her one, but you should never turn away potential allies. This world is hard enough as it is, and having loved ones on your side can make it all a little easier.

Thank you very much. I know I don’t have to explain but if she’s willing to learn I don’t want to shut that down either.
