People have had it good for so long they’ve forgotten what it was like in the before times. I’m old enough to remember polio. It was fucking awful. Like an invisible death waiting for you. A note that this is no different than refusing to put a baby in a child safety seat or seatbelt a child and then driving on the highway.
The odds of a death are not 100%, but you just increased them, dramatically.
And you chose to do it... you made a conscious choice to put your child in jeopardy, even if the threat of death is low, around 0.1 to 0.3% some 1 in 1000 measles kids will get permanent deafness; blindness is rare in the developed world, but up to 1 in 100 (in developing countries)

You could always talk to your pediatrician about an accelerated vaccine schedule if you have concerns. They may say no, but there are some instances I believe where this can be done. I’m not sure if there are more up to date guidelines about routine MMR vaccines that have developed in the setting of this rise in measles.

I think you should be able to sue, civilly, any parent of a purposefully unvaccinated child who infects yours... they are the uninsured motorists of the world.
You have the right to act recklessly, you really do, but you have to take full responsibility for your actions and how they harm others.

While I agree with the idea, unfortunately, the legal challenges to implementation and conviction would be insurmountable… it’s next to impossible to prove where and who exactly you got it from when there’s so many potential vectors. That, and the American legal system is insanely expensive where even if you “win”, you’ll most certainly be in the red after lawyers, court fees, time-off, etc. necessary to even get to a trial.

You can prove by proximity... if the only measles person infected your kid (who was, let's say allergic to the vaccine),
Also, you can subpoena for an RNA sampling of the source Measles infection and link it, scientifically to your infection (this is done routinely with e. coli outbreaks to link infections to restaurants/supermarkets).
This would prove a causal link and meet the evidentiary burden of 'preponderance of the evidence' (I would argue it meets 'clear and convincing evidence')...

Just compel the defendant to submit to a blood test for a specific genotyping of the N-450 nucleaocapsid gene and match it to your infection).... the only hurdle is a defendant claim that you got the same strain from different sources.
The burden, I would imagine would fall under duty of care and a breach of that duty, esp if they knew they were sick or contagious and chose to go to a crowded place.... my fear would be if your state offers legal exemptions to vaccination.

However, we’re quickly moving to a world where more and more folks aren’t vaccinated which means there’s more and more potential places and people to get it from…
Which quickly leads to the 2nd burden of enforcement: cost.
